Do you make your own skin care products?
I'm not quite sure where to ask this question. Because I have ER/PR+ cancer, I want to avoid the parabens that are used in so many products. I have used the same skin care for more than ten years and was very satisfied with it, but all of the products contain parabens. Does anyone here make your own skin care? If so, where do you get the formulas? Where do you buy raw materials? Are your homemade products as good as commercial ones?

Hi curveball --
This forum seems fine for this topic, as there are other threads here on all types of topics. However, you may find some helpful advice from the posters in the Complementary and Holistic Medicine and Treatment forum.
Also, Dr. Marisa Weiss, President and Founder of Breastcancer.org, writes our Think Pink, Live Green Column which you might helpful. There are even a few blog entries devoted to make-up/skin care with tips on avoiding parabens and other chemicals:
- The Possible Price of Beauty
- Moisturizers: Hope or Harm in a Jar
- Moisturizers: Hope or Harm in a Jar Part II
Plus, there's tons of other advice throughout the Think Pink, Live Green Column that you might find helpful!
Enjoy!

I've tried a few things-Raw(organic) honey with Tumeric as a mask for acne, Organic Coconut oil for hair care and shaving and Organic Yogurt is another good one for hair and facial mask. I'm trying to use natural ingredients as much as I can, but found it very difficult to achieve the same results as with using products with parabens. I went to the Dermatologist today and she recommended products by Dr Hauschka. Whole Foods and Trader Joes has quite a few brands of natural skincare and makeup lines. Burts Bee is one of them. I havent really tried any of them yet.

@Day, what do you use to wash your face? The water where I am living now is quite hard and soap does not lather.

I always enjoy Day's posts.. keep posting Day. !! I do like coconut oil and have found that moisterizing my face with it and then abrading it off with a wash cloth makes my skin super smooth. I guess this is an important post.. it's so big! sorry about that.
-
@apple, doesn't using the coconut that way make your skin really oily? I am in my mid-fifties, but I'm scared that using an oil on my face that way would send me right back to teenage skin---blackheads, pimples....the whole mess. Is your skin dry to start off with? If so I can see how using an oil to cleanse would produce great results.

The coconut oil absorbs well and doesnt sit on my skin...it doesnt seem to get greasy.
Day...so COOL about you making your own stuff. I bought a book to do it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have a 13 year old daughter that I want to teach as well!! -

I buy products from Skin Actives. You can make your own products with their ingredients or buy ready made. There is a great forum and the founder will answer any questions. She is a PhD and very knowledgeable . They are online
