Oh, Athena, they are amazing statues..really makes you want to STROKE them....

Barbe - if you sing in to Amazon, and then use the search at the left side when you click on the book - you can REALLY read, see , a lot of the book..and read about how she does it.  She started out as a BOTANICAL ARTIST - amazing, isn't it.  She also posted for years on Wet Canvas, very, very generous, lots of good teaching there

I printed a few reference paintings of Jean Haines. Then I painted my pastors dog, as a surprise to him because he was disappointed at not getting one of my paintings at my art clubs raffle.

It turned out so nice and loose..like one of the dogs she did. Animals don't have to be white , black or brown or yellow. This little guy was blue, purple, yellow and green and some other colors I can't remember. I think it's always trying to remember.....'paint outside the box'. What do you think girls?

SO HAPPY YOU FOUND JOY WITH JEAN HAINES ;-)  I think of YOU everytime I open Jeanne Dobie.   Even have a pallette now of just her colors...all 'exercises' so far, but learning a LOT.

That WAS an amazing link Sunflowers, but again it flips from pic to pic. I'd like to see how she gets the dead white spots in the middle of say, the dark blue around the dog in the last pic. I don't think she used salt or "cling film" (love that!). Just ADORE her style!!! And the fact that she moves her paper around a lot. I kind of thought of that as cheating but where the heck did I get THAT idea???? I love the fact that she works with so much water.

well, Barbe - I just bought BOTH her books....and if you go on WetCanvas, do a Jean Haines search, you will find about 10 years of her posts, lessons, explanations, tutorials she did FOR FREE - just amazing...I'll have to log on and get her screen name and I'll pm it to you...

Thanks Sunflowers!!! I'm checking her out. My local library doesn't have any of her books. The library is linked to 2 others, so I'm disapointed...sigh.

    SPEAKING OF FABULOUS BOOKS:

artsee - it is SO worth it - just the MOST wonderful source for artists, creafts people.  SO MUCH INFO, take a bit to learn your way around, but once registered - GOLDMINE of good stuff.

Ikea is 1 1/2 hours from me - and I give THANKS DAILY for their fabulous foam mattresses, NOTHING like the ones in regular mattress stores - also have a Medal Day Bed from them - as my "sofa" and I often sleep their too ;-))

Sun..I've given up on the Wet Canvas. Every user name I put in they say is already taken...ya right. That erases everything else I put in and then they want you to keep filling in these silly letters and passwords all over again. UGH!

artsee - send an email to the site administrators - that doesn't sound right..they do have probably hundreds of thousands of members, it's global, so I'm not surprised if many names are already used

I think it's worth it - but that's just how I feel.  Don't think I wold have "found" Jean Haines if not for that site

    Just ADORE her books...good luck

WOW!! I just tried 7 times to get an account and finally got it...I think!! It kept saying that I had the question wrong (it was 2+2) and then finally asksed if I was a robot!!!!! Sometimes those validation letters that we have to type in are vague...looks like a small h or an n....hmmmm.

artsee, with me it wasn't my name but the validation box letters that was screwing me up. Did it actually say your name was the problem?

    barbe

sometimes the name is already used - as I said this is GLOBAL, and probably has upwards of hundreds of thousands by now....

still think it's worth it - free, great advice, resource of "learning centers" for every art...

I lurk in this thread but I had to pop in to say Artsee, if you're trying to use any permutation of that user name on a busy art website you're probably not going to find a name that's open unless you get very creative with numbers and any allowed characters after the Artsee part.  I would think that pretty much any user name with Art in it would be problematic.  If you're teasing about trying to use that user name then I was fooled.

I got into the site. It initially kept saying the 'user name was already taken' but yesterday I tried one of the names again and it took it so I don't know what that was about.

It is a very cool site and when I have some more time I am going to dissect it. It takes time to go through something like this.

Been asked to do a spur of the moment exhibit at our local University. Got 1 1/2 weeks to pull it off. Someone canceled out of their exhibit and I never can say 'no'. So I'm going like a bat trying to get organized.

    talk soon,

    Artsee,

hope you had a great week of painting.  Trying to remember, did you study with bridget austin?  think that was the name of an artist I saw "online" someplace, and reminded me of your work too...

Just LOVING the Jean Haines Atmospheric Watercolour book....

Yes, I painted with Bridget Austin. She is such a super lady and so talented. She whips out a beautiful painting in 20 min. Had a show reception on Friday night and there were lots of people in and out all night. Two other artists and I did the exhibit. Sold one that night, which is always a plus.

I have two paintings in the Wisconsin watercolor Fall show too and that reception was this afternoon. I'm getting worn out!!

Hi I am Gingerbrew on here and just found this thread. I may have found it two years ago and just don't remember.

I bought painting, drawing and watercolor books. I purchased brushes for oil, water color and acrylic. I bought beautiful colored pencils and watercolor pencils. I sent for pads of water color paper, cold pressed and the other kind. I have some canvases. I have oils, acrylics and watercolors. I have a table top easel and one to use outside with a little stool. Do you all know where I am going with this yet?   I was shopping with a friend for sketching paper and I kept changing my mind choosing a lower and lower grade of paper. She asked me why I was doing that. I told her that I didn't want to ruin the better paper that I wasn't a good enough sketcher.     I have not used any of my materials yet. What is my problem. Day after day passes and nothing happens. I am very good at watching TV,  and selecting art materials.    Love Ginger

Ginger, you are normal. I know what you mean about ruining the good paper!! Remember though, that a lot of the mediums you're talking about can be painting over...hehehehehe Consider your first attempt as just "treating" the canvas! One day the penny will drop and something will inspire you and you will go like a barn on fire. Right now, you have no inspiration! You need to get out and take photos or get books of art (not instructional, just inspirational!) and let your imagination go. I've done my best work when I have an actual idea in front of me and I'm not trying to do it from my head.

I also use my supplies differently than what they are intended. For example, I recently did a fibre art piece on stretched canvas! It's doing things like that that let loose our inner muse....

Barbe thank you so much. You are insightful.  I will try to take your advice, first reading it several times hoping I will remember it.

I did sign up for the March Martha Pullen Serger School.  I don't remember how to use my serger and my last one from 2000 I think I could still thread blindfolded. This one I  got in 2000 I was intimidated by from the start. So I signed up, I figure it will immerse me and give me a place to restart among friendly faces.   I did the school of Art Fashion in 2002 and it was very busy. I would wind up staying in my room if it is too busy, so this seemed a better choice. A way to restart myself.  I really am like a slug just spreading out.  I mean seriously, I peed in one of my shoes yesterday. I didnt get to the bathroom in time and as I sat down I peed a bit into my freaking shoe!

I am barely aware of any inspiration aorund me. Where I live is beautiful and I am numb to it. I am not seeing.

    Thanks again Barbe

    Ginger

Ginger, at least the sense of humor has not forsaken you.

I think what you are talking about in the art world is called "white fright". Some people panic looking at the white canvas when they don't come up with a thought on what to put on it. This is where a "beginner' painting class comes in. You would be amazed at how your confidence will kick into gear. Taking pictures of a nice landscape or flower will help motivation.

I sense that maybe you have a touch of depression would you agree? Something for that helps kick your body into place. Many of us here know that. It's not easy going through what we have been through. You didn't list your treatment at all on your 'story' and after chemo and rads, everything is affected.

I had to laugh about your story about not getting into the bathroom in time. How many of us are going to admit to that same 'scene'? Now that's a huge part of just getting plain 'older'. ugh!!

Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

I took the bull by the horns and started to soapy wipe everything in the house. I hate to house clean but I put my mind to it and it feels and smells so good in here. However I can't move today much and my knees are killing me from scrubbing a huge vinyl floor. Am I nuts? Put your mind to it and move forward.

    Hugs, Artsee

Yes, Artsee, you are nuts!!! I couldn't do a floor on my knees if you put a gun to my head!! I have no kneecaps so it's so painful to kneel on the damaged areas...sigh.

Ginger, my name is Barbe1958 and I have peed down my leg, too. Wasn't wearing shoes or it surely would have pooled there, but was able to clean up while sitting on the can...TMI? Nope, just advice! hehehehehehehe I was just lazy, too, and didn't want to get up (it hurts too much!!) and waited too long. Oh, the things we do that we don't tell people! I've managed to keep my bowels behaved, but I'm sure that's next to go. In fact with my back so bad, my doc asked if I was still able to control my urine and bowels!!! Sheesh! What do I have to look forward to with THAT question????

I wasn't able to be "crafty" for a long time after my cancer dx. It's just recently that I've been able to sew and it's been about a year and a half since I've been able care enough to pick up my camera!! Now I'm finding that the pictures I'm taking are inspiring my work! Either in colour combinations (loving blue and orange right now - fall is my fav time of year) or just in the composition of the picture. That took a long time to come back and there was times I wondered if it ever would! We moved houses 2 years ago and I hadn't touched my sewing room for 2 years so I wondered if I should even bother setting it up in this place. Glad I did, but it sat here useless for the last two years until a couple of weeks ago! I'd dug around for beads for another project but finally got my machine going. Whew!!
