I was recently dx with dcis. With my multifocal lesions in my right breast, skin sparing mastectomy was the best case scenario. They are unable to save my nipple and areole. Since I have a very strong family history of bc, I am opting to prophylactically remove my left breast. My question is: since I've already had my pec muscle stretched by my previous implant surgery, will my mastectomy recovery be less godawful ?

Thank you, obviously, I am brand new to all of this :(

Sorry for your dx, but this is a great site for support.  Have you discussed a BMX with direct-to-implant surgery?  Since you already have implants and a DCIS dx that should not require additional treatment you would seem like a great candidate for this.  Many people have little pain from the mastectomy itself, and more discomfort from the tissue expanders which are hard and uncomfortable.  Going direct-to-implant would cause some discomfort since a larger implant would most likely be used, but because they are soft it should be less uncomfortable.

Thank you so so much for your response.since they are unable to save my nipple and areole, the reconstructive plastic that I met when I met with the cancer board already told me that if I went straight to implant rather than expandersI wouldn't be as big as I am now, which will not upset me ( I don't think????)at all. Hopefully, I'll heal somewhat symmetrically and not need another surgery. I'd rather minimize my pain, avoid more sugery if i can and to be honest a DD isn't what I wanted to be or all its cracked up to be...

I hope that you can go the direct route - if successful it would move things along a lot faster for you. If your plastic surgeon is good, you result can be too.  Ask to see pictures of before and afters, and ask a lot of questions.  Some surgeons will put you in touch with former patients who had the same procedure - that can be useful.  I wish you the best!
