Exercise Helps Immune System Protect Against Future Cancers

Thanks for sharing! Everyone should exercise more, and it's pretty cool to figure out exactly what helps the body fight the cancer. I hope one day those who could not exercise could still benefit from this research.
Bottom line is: breast cancer has no cure. Recurrence is a crap shot. Keep investing and keep working on the cure.

For those trying to lose weight....a new study showed 30 minutes of exercise helped people lose 3 or so more pounds than those who exercised an hour.
Before BC, I would exercise 2.5 hours/day......yeah, that worked for me

I was dx'd in September 2011. In March 2012, I began an intensive diet and exercise program that was closely medically monitored.
I started exercising slowly - a walk to the mailbox and back.
Eventually I could power-walk for an hour. I rode my bike. I did water aerobics for 90 minutes, three times a week.
When I'd lost almost 60 pounds, more than 65 total inches, and my BMI went from 34.1 to 24.1, my oncologist told me I had reduced my risk of recurrence by 23%.

Blessings - that is AWESOME!!!! Congratulations and I better you feel better too!!!

Thank you, cp418. I feel better today than I have in 20 years.
That breast cancer diagnosis saved my life in SO many ways!!!

I lost. Exercised daily and ate fresh and healthy until my dx. Thank you for all of your posts. After another numerous surgeries thankfully not cancer related but onc needed to double and triple check to make sure. and a weight gain of over forty lbs on my part your inspiring words are putting me back to try to eat healthy and exercise again. lets see,:)

Blessings--you are an inspiration! I was diagnosed only about 2 weeks ahead of you and had a longer treatment cycle, but you are such an inspiration that I am going to step up my workout efforts. I lost 20 pounds during treatment, which I know is unusual, and I'm trying hard to lose 10-20 more, get into a healthy BMI and continue my daily exercise program.

Aw, thanks, mary625....but I didn't have rads OR chemo. I think if I had been in active treatment, it would have been MUCH harder.
Because I am 100%ER+, I initially started my diet and exercise program as ammunition against my oncologist, so I wouldn't have to take the Arimidex. I had told her that I didn't need the AI because I was post-menopausal and had already had a hysterectomy. She kindly pointed out that estrogen was produced in body fat, of which I had plenty.
I couldn't control the fact that I got BC, but I felt like I could control the amount of body fat I had.
I think the reason that I was succesful was that I considered that this program WAS my breast cancer treatment.
There was no way I was going to "cheat", and no way I was going to weenie out on my workouts. I looked at it as medicine.
(I ended up taking the Arimidex anyway....
)
Wishing you - and mommy4 - the best. You can do it! (One day, one step at a time...)

Thank you. Congratulations on your well deserved success. Interesting point about estrogen stored in body fat. A true incentive. my onc never told me that.
