Biopsy Next Week

Options

I was diagnosed with DCIS in 2005.  It was very small <9 mm, so we opted for lumpectomy, no radiation, Tamoxifen.  I did a little more than 4 years of Tamoxifen when I had to quit due to extensive hives.

I had a mammo last Wednesday and they called me back for more views on Friday.  The radiologist said that calcifications fall into three categories - the ones we're not worried about at all, the ones we are worried about, and the ones that need more study.  He said mine need more study.  They'll call me Mon morning to schedule a biopsy.

My questions are mostly about recurrence of DCIS.  I know the calcs with either be nothing or be a recurrence, but how often is the recurrence just DCIS?  I'm not sure why, but I thought that when you've had DCIS and then have a recurrence, its almost always invasive.  Any thoughts?

Well it could be another area of DCIS, as you had a lumpectomy.  You are being closely watched. I don't think this means that you now have IDC. It seems as if they are worried they are seeing more calcification's.  I hope you get answers soon and that you are not suffering with too much worry!! You really are in a good place regardless of what they may have seen. Good luck!

I'm having a stereotactic biopsy tomorrow morning.  I found the citation I was remembering.  It said that 50% of recurrences of women diagnosed with DCIS are invasive.

I've found if I prepare myself for the worst case scenario, I won't be shocked when I hear the biopsy results, and will be relieved if its benign.  I hope to know something definite by the end of the week.  Fingers crossed!
