Raw skin under breast after radiation...remedies??
I just finished radiation last Friday and am so happy to have that done. It was really a breeze except for the last week when my skin started breaking down and becoming raw underneath my breast. I am very large breasted so have been trying to avoid skin on skin contact but unless I stand on my hands a pretty difficult task!!
I have been doing the domeboro soaks and putting aquaphor on. Also my RO just wrote a prescription for mycostatin (I couldn't use the silvadene cream because I am allergic to sulfa).
Just wondering if any if you have things that have worked for you....so anxious to get it healed as soon as possible...it is pretty darn incomfortable!
Thank you,
Angela

Hi Angela, I had a mastectomy and could use silvadene. But I'm writing to give you encouragement. My peeling and really red skin didn't show up until 1 week after Rads ended. Then it was sore and uncomfortable for 2 weeks, it all peeled, and looked really good relatively quickly. Once I had to take motrin because of pain. Hang in there. It will get better!

Pure Aloe Vera helped as did an Rx gel with lidocaine when the Silvadene didn't work. I had it in the summer and used corn starch to keep the sweat away, but using that would depend if you have raw skin. My skin cleared up pretty quickly once the treatment stopped. I hope it's the same for you. Hang in there. It really will end; even if it doesn't seem like it now.

I found wearing a white cotton T shirt next to my skin.....and then putting my bra on over the Tshirt helped

Hi all,
Thank you for the encouragement and ideas. It definitely is a journey...just anxious to get all healed up. My 30 yr old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 weeks after me which has just been heartbreaking...much harder on me than dealing with mine. She just started chemo so just want to heal and do whatever will speed that along so I can just concentrate on my precious little girl. -
Ahowe I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis so soon after your own. This disease is so insidious. I am also large breasted and had some extreme redness and peeling under my breast and a constant burning sensation. I used boiron calendula cream (there is also an ointment) for healing because it was all natural, and then a mix of aquafor and 5% lidocaine for the pain. My RO prescribed the lidocaine ointment and it was a godsend for all the extra sore spots. I also got some non stick dressings from my nurse that were coated in aquafor. I would place those over the really sore and red areas after adding some extra aquafor and lidocaine, then cover with another padded dressing, and that would allow me to wear a very soft bra (which then kept my breast from sagging down too much over the sore area under my breast). Rads finished for me just under three weeks ago, and almost all the discomfort is gone and everything is healed up and looking pretty much normal again.
Wishing you speedy healing, a great outcome for your daughter, and sending you both a hug.

Ahowe, as well as the great advice from other members, the main Breastcancer.org site has Skin Care Tips in the Radiation section.
We hope your daughter will find support and information here too.

Hi Ahowe so sorry to hear about your daughters dx as well. As for the breasts after rads my skin also broke down big time. I found what helped me ( because I couldn,t wear a bra) was putting on my cream them I used a non-stick telfa pad by johnson and johnson in the crease of my boob it stopped the skin on skin friction and felt cushy. Good luck with healing, it will heal. And all the best for you and your daughter.

@crazyride43 thanks for the comment. I see my RO on Tuesday to recheck the area under my breast as they were slightly concerned it may be getting infected. I am going to ask him about the lidocaine. Glad to hear you are pretty much healed!! And thank you for the thoughts about my daughter...it is one thing for me to have breast cancer but I tell you my daughter just broke my heart. She does have a very good prognosis (stage 1, grade 1, Er/pr+,her2-, lymph node negative) however being just 30 there just isn't all that much data yet. Most all studies including the onco dx is on post menopausal women. But she is an incredibly strong woman and we will get thru this and beat this stupid disease!!! Just had breakfast with her this am and she thinks she is starting to lose her hair :-(. Sending you are hug too!
@roberta thank you for the comment. I got the telfa pads but wasn't sure if I should be covering the area or not. I think I will give it a try. Thank you for the thoughts for me and my daughter! And all the best to you too! -
The one thing that worked the best for me was just letting it "air". I would lie down in the afternoon for about an hour with my top off - no creams and just let it air. I also used a soft non stick pad in the fold under the breast. I healed up within a few weeks of my last rads appt. Wishing both you and your daughter a speedy recovery.

Thank you I did that yesterday and going to do it today...hoping that is the ticket!!!! :-)

Hope it works for you too!

Besides airing it out, I was told to use a antifungicidal powder (sorry, I forget the name) which the pharmacist located in the medicated foot powder area. It's in a white and blue plastic bottle...and boy, it was relief. The skin under my breast fold sloughed off twice and wearing a bra was nearly impossible. At home, I wore a camisole with a shelf bra inside out so the elastic was on the outside. Hope you heal quickly!

I couldn't put anything on my wounds. I used a mepilex dressing instead .. it is expensive, but it cleared me up in a week, you can't shower with it on, but after I started healing I was able to reuse one (taking off and then putting it back on after I was completely dry) for a couple days. You can't put ANYTHING on underneath these in order for them to work - it will not stick if you do.
Good luck to you, it does get better!

I used Calendula tea baths for radiation burns. Took very little time to heal, plus the cool soaks felt great against burnt skin. Look for Calendula leaves at health stores. Make into a tea and then put on washcloth and hold against burn two times a day. Will feel better in no time at all. Good Luck!!

I have the same thing. I still have seven boosts to go. Wearing a bra kills under the breast. What I did was took gauze and put cream thick on it and place it on the skin under boob. Then I affix the bra over it. I don’t wear underwire at all. Once it is in place it seems to be ok. I also tuck some glaze with cream area side of my underarm It is also sore there. By the sentinel biopsy. I will keep this in place for several hours until I have to shower. Good luck. I just want to get through my seven boosts. I don’t want them to cancel anything
