What not to wear Mastectomy episode
Sorry the video has been taken down.

I saw that episode when it first aired. I enjoyed it and loved trhe dressing tips.
-
Hmm, is it just me? I thought she looked prettier before. And her new clothes look kind of fussy (though better than her track suit). I always have trouble with these makeover shows, though.
-
I did not like how Stacey downplayed the emotional effect of the mastectomy! Yes we all have body image problems, some may be worse than others, but I thought it was very unsympathetic maybe? But then again, if she didn't have breast cancer and didn't have one herself, she wouldn't "get it."
-
I don't know if Stacey was so much downplaying the effect of the mastectomy as recognizing that there was more going on than the mastectomy alone. Sara was very critical of her own body, not only her flatness but also her calves, thighs and hips. She talked to herself, and perhaps even saw herself, as if she still weighed 240 pounds.
It sounded to me by the end of the program as if maybe the new clothes (including knowing what styles will flatter her new shape), new haircut & color and new makeup, may have started Sara thinking differently about herself, which would be all to the good. Also, her hubby liked her new look. I'm not married, but I bet for anyone who is, having your husband tell you "You look great!" is a real confidence booster.

I thought the hosts did a good job and I do think the "victim" of the episode had a lot of body issues that were not directly related to the BMX. Like Nagem, I do not necessarily share the taste of the arbiters on these kinds of shows, but I do think they did a nice job with this woman.
-
I loved the changes to her hair. The old color & style made her look so much older than she actually was.
-
Soteria, agree on the hair. I just wished they had also made her stand up straight.
-
I wish they could make ME stand up straight! I really don't miss my boobs and don't feel ashamed of being flat, but somehow I can't seem to translate my inner strength into erect posture. Six years out, I'm still hunched over my chest unless I consciously adjust it. Five minutes later I've forgotten and slumped again.
-
Nagem, I am the same way with posture. I like what Starak suggested on a different thread, to adjust, even if it is only for the next few steps. I think my hunching draws even more attention to me. So it is something I am working on...every time I think about it.
This reminds me, I had an aunt who at age 98 still did not have indoor plumbing and...get this, she cut all the backs off her chairs because it made for sloppy posture :-) to lean back. I think of her and un-hunch. Once again.
Thank you River for posting this what not to wear episode...I have been looking for it!!
-
Thanks for sharing that video. When I first heard about it I looked but could not find it.
-
I'm glad some enjoyed the video. I picked up some hints from it.
I saw the show when it originally aired but hadn't been able to find the video through the network's website. I finally thought of searching at youtube. Duh I should have thought of that before. I think everything's there now.
-
It wasn't on youtube when I checked in the summer. Good timing on your part.
-
Riverrat, Thank you for posting this. I went to the mall today and came home a little down. This show was just what I needed. To be honest, I thought she looked great in t shirts. It gave me confidence. Pam

Nagem and Crystal, I know I sound like an old auntie with the posture thing, but standing up straight makes just about anyone look better, with or without boobs. I had terrible posture as a kid, but then I developed a back problem and the doc ordered ballet. So I did ballet for 3-4 years.
It IS hard after a BMX to keep good posture, but it really struck me watching that show that when she hunched, it only emphasized that she had no boobs and drew attention to it. It also made her look about 10-15 years older than she is.
-
Thanks for posting this. I thought she looked fabulous and especially like her hair and makeup. I think that if one is going to go flat, tops with some detail looks much better than a plain T-shirt. She focused more on her butt, thighs and peception of being "big" than the bilateral MSX. Once they found pants that fit her, her whole attitude changed.
-
How cool that they had an episode devoted to this!
-
I sure wish I had a fast internet connection. (In case anyone asks, HughesNet sux. If I try to watch a 4-minute Youtube video, it eats up all our download allowance [250 MB/day] and HughesNet punishes us by slowing our download to old-fashioned modem speed for the next 24 hrs.) Maybe I'll just imagine what's in that episode. <sigh>
BTW, thanks to everybody for mentioning slouching. I've always slouched - I think it had something to do with being flat-chested as a teenager. Now that I'm uniboobed, I slump my shoulders even more. Oh, yeah... except when I'm wearing my Genie bra and silicone foob. Then, mysteriously, I don't slouch as much.

Sorry Otter, oh do I remember modem speed. Maybe you'll catch it in reruns sometime.
-
@Momine, I wonder if the "mastectomy slouch" comes from a combination of trying to avoid movements that exaggerate muscle soreness immediately following surgery, and unconsciously trying to protect the surgery area from being touched. I know one of my pre-surgery dreads was that after MX someone would turn around in the bus and smack me in the surgical area with a backpack or a big purse. It never actually happened, but I still cringe just thinking about the possibility. It doesn't make much sense, because a whack with a heavy object would probably have been equally painful (if not worse) when there was still a breast there, but it never occurred to me that it might happen, so it didn't make me slouch.
-
Phooey! I got here too late. This is what comes up on that link now:
-
Curveball, that sounds logical, and I was afraid of that too in the beginning. I really had to work on keeping my posture. Wearing the fiber foobs also helped with that, because they kinda cushion the area.
