jacee- that is precisely why I am getting tested; although I have already made the decision along with my onc to have bilateral prophyactic mastectomy and oophorectomy because of my dx and my family history, I want my sister and nieces to have fewer insurance hassles than I have had to deal with. It's ridiculous that insurance companies can delay treatment & testing while they decide if you fit into their neat little boxes; if it were me and nobody else involved I would likely skip the BRCA testing altogether and move forward with my surgeries... so I too can move forward with a life not centered around breast cancer.

Hope you are recovered well and incident free.

Called the Health Advocate program for work and we got on a call with my provider, UHC.  Right now my plan for this year is at 100% and this test is covered.  We did ask if a specific type of MD had to write the order or if a GP could, they said doesn't matter.  We did ask if there's a specific criteria about having the test, other than my own BC.  Didn't seem to be.  Health Advocate program is having one of their Nurses walk me through things.

So made an appt with my private GP since the VA won't run the test for me.  They say I don't 100% fit their criteria and won't take the chance of such an expensive test being not covered.  What ever...I have health insurance and don't HAVE to rely on them for every little thing.  I've learned to use it and branch beyond the VA when it's to my benefit.  Will have the GP address the Osteopenia also.  Am about to go on Lupron and Aromasin and the VA Onc said to take OTC Calcium and Vit D.  Told her I already do.   Something seems off a bit with that one.  The private GP already handles my Hypothyroid that the VA says doesn't exist along with the Pre-Diabetes.
