So I had my appointment with my MO today. He told me things about the radiology report I didn't know. Apparently the spot on my ribs shows as sclerotic with lyric around it - not good. Yet he still says that, based on the fact that my PET scan in March was clear and I've had chemo since the, he thinks it may be benign. In the same breath, he says it is very suspicious and looks like a met. So I know nothing. He scheduled a PET scan for November 12 because he says, no matter whether it is a met or it isn't, my treatment plan is the same. So confused. Help?

    Lana, I've been following to find out results. It sucks you still don't know. Even if the treatment would be the same, I would still want to know for sure one way or another what I was dealing with. What I do find strange is, that if the MO feels it might be mets, he/she should  be ordering a biopsy. A rib is a very easy place to have it done. I can't believe you're being left hanging like that. Was your recent scan a bone scan? They're pretty definitive (other than a biopsy) when it comes to bone mets. I've never had a PET, so I'm not sure what exactly they show, but hopefully, in November, you'll get a definitive answer. Can you ask him/her why no biopsy?

    Spoke with him again this morning. He and my RO have consulted and reviewed the two most recent radiology reports, and both now believe that it is a met. He says it is a classic presentation - mostly sclerotic with lytic areas, and gives a "distinct appearance of a a met". The reason he is waiting until November to do a PET is because I have had two recent rib details that show no change in the area, and he wants to give the Tamox (which I just started yesterday) time to kick in so he can see if it is having an effect on it. He did use the word oligometastatic and said we will definitely treat with "curative intent".

    Lana sorry to hear that it is a met but good on your onc for trying for the curative treatment. Sure hope that Tamoxifen has a good effect and does what we all hope for and gets rid of that little booger.

    At least you now know with what you are dealing.

    You're right Chrissy. At least now I know what I am dealing with, or at least with as much certainty as I am going to get. I was actually not shocked by this news. I have known for awhile that something was wrong. I was just praying that it had something to do with post-mastectomy pain or something like that. But I also knew they kept seeing this spot on radiography. I expected that I would be devastated when I actually heard the words, but so far, I am not. I suppose that may change once it actually sinks in.
