Sept 2012 chemo

Hello everyone, It's 8:45pm EST. First chemo done. I had the port placed in 6 days ago. I really hope any person who has not had chemo infused through their port yet reads this. The PAIN when the nurse stuck the needle through my skin to access and connect the chemo to the implanted port was excruciating! The gauge of the needle was big. Worse than stereo biopsy, worse than post lumpectomy, worse than sentinal node biopsy and really thought not much could suck more than that. I knew about the cream but it wasn't ordered for me, so I didnt get it. Now about 6hrs. since I left the hospital. Little bit nauseous, similar to if you've eaten something and you know you shouldn't have. Just a feeling of malaise, almost like you are coming down w/something. I hope these symptoms will abate, and am going to have to go more pro-active. Manners and politeness are no longer serving me well.

Jojo does your head still hurt? I had my honey go all the way with a #1 tonight because my hair hurt now I feel much better and actually have no desire to wear the night cap I was given . Feels pretty good just being free -
Toastiecat - Thanks for posting those links - very helpful. I'm approaching 4th treatment and my very overgrown cut and faded highlights are still all there, but I'm just now seeing shedding so I think wigs and scarves are just around the corner.
Usmcblondie - Hang in there. I thought the port procedure was a piece of cake, until I left the hospital and the numbing agent wore off - then it hurt like hell for about a week. Turned yellow and green and all sorts of nasty bruise colors, but it's worth it to have it.
Jojo - I share the same biomarkers you have, and have never heard about other factors causing the cancer grade. Interesting, wonder what's behind that. I'll put that q on the list for my MO.

I really liked the class too. Like you said I didn't learn much regarding makeup application, but I hit the jackpot on my kit. All high end cosmetics...Channel, Estae Lauder, Clarins...I even got a Channel makeup brush. The instructor said that alone was worth $100. I met some really lovely ladies too. It was my first time at the Life with Cancer center. It was just lovely. I signed up for a ballroom dancing class tomorrow night. I'm going to try some of the fitness classes too.

Patricia...your hair looks awesome!!! Can I ask you how you put a picture in your posts?

hey everyone. just thought id jump in and say hi. feeling pretty crappy still from my first treatment on the 17th. I do have a question. For those of you have had port placement, how long did it take for your pain to go away? i had my port placed the 11th, and it is still quite sore. i was against them putting it on my left side as I have lost most use of my left arm from 2 emergency surgeries on the left, one for a 4cm hematoma under the TE and another a week later for a torn pectoral muscle which resulted in having to remove the TE on that side. I cant move that side without pain. Its horrible. Im supposed to start PT but im afraid of the pain and my doc wont prescribe anything. I am also having some major anxiety issues. i am so embarrased of going in public without my boobs. i miss my 38DDs. I know I should be thankful I am alive, and I am, but its getting to me. Now I have to wait til im done with chemo to restart reconstruction. I wont be done til March. I suppose if I was older it wouldnt bother me so much, but Im only 32. I also am having a numb feeling in my tounge/lips. Anyone else have that side effect? And im simply exhausted. But taking care of 4 young kids probably attributes to that lol. sorry girls just had to rant. Hope everyone had a great se free day!!

Hello ladies...
I just wanted wanted to share with you and article on melatonin and to reinerate why I take it. I not only take it for a sleep aid I take it due to being estrogen positive. Melatonin has been linked to helping reduce the growth of estrogen positive breast cancer. I can say that after taking 5 to 10 mg of this nightly, while eating very healthy, and chemo my tumor has shrunk by 25% just after 1 cycle of A/C. I think its due to the combination of all three. I can say that I do not always sleep great from it but still take it for the effects it has on cancer. This is just one atricle I shared but feel free to research it on your own. Sorry to hear that you took it Patricia and it didnt work : (

I am happy to read your stories of the look good feel good sessions. I will be going on Oct 8th. Cant wait!
I am now 6 days past chemo treatment #2 and have been feeling great since yesterday. This round was a bit more draining than the last but I am holding strong.
Have a fabulous day ladies!

Had to post one more thing. I see lots of you talking of the pain the needle causes when put into your port. My nurse uses a freezing spray. Its stings for a sec but the needle is not even felt. I will ask what it is called so you can ask for it. But I have to say the sting of the spray is way more tolerable than the needle without it!

Hello Ladies, I'm approaching my 2nd treatment of A/C on Friday and am having some anxiety almost like what I experienced before my first tx. Should I expect things to go just as it did after my first tx? I'm afraid things, and by things mean SE, will get progressively worse after each one. Is this true or am I being paranoid? The worse SE ,so far, was from the Neulasta shot. Despite taking Claritin, I had alot of pain in my legs and back, which then went into my skin (like having a really bad flu w/o the fever). I live with my puppy (Stewie who cracks me up everyday) but do have lots of family/friends just so willing to come and take care of me. I just need to let them know if and when I do. I'm a lucky lady to have such wonderful people around me. Stay strong and positive ladies....Karen

kstillie...I can say my second treatment I was not looking forward to but once I say my MO and she said I was making progress(my tumor was shrinking) it made it easier. My se's were about the same but the fatigue was a little longer. I have had 2 neulasta shots so far the fisrt was horrible bone pain and I even used claritin. The second was painful but not as bad as the first. My mo and nurse explained it like this to me. If you blood counts are up it wont hurt as bad as if they are down. When they are down the nuelasta pushes the bone marrow harder to produce more WBC so if your is in good standing i would assume that it wont be so bad. I wa down from the shot for about 24 hrs and my WBC are above normal.
Hope this helps! take care....

Hi Sparky,
I'm sorry you're still feeling bad from port placement.
I can't comment on your SEs since I'm on different chemo, but I wanted to say I definitely hear you on the feeling self conscious thing. I was also a DD before, so it was quite shocking after the BMX. Also one of my boobs is weirdly shaped (I call it the squished hamburger!) because of how much skin they had to take. When I started being able to wear my regular clothes again (not giant button down shirts) I felt terrible because everything looked wrong. I did something kind of kooky: I packed all my shirts away in bins, and went to the Gap and bought new ones. They have these nice tshirts that are very soft, and loose and flowy. They're a nice material that you can wear to work with a blazer. I only have 5 shirts now, but it's actually great. It's super easy to get dressed.Doing that was really helpful for me -- I got to feel inconspicuous in my clothes, and it felt nice to go shopping for myself. And I was there on a sale day, so I got a bargain to boot.
I've heard bloggers refer to BC as like going through 2nd puberty...well, I'm approaching it the same way as I did when I was 12, and hiding my body completely!
Hope everyone is feeling as good as possible today.
xoxo
