Anyone have their go bad after radiation?

Options

I just went to the dentist today and need 4 molars pulled. All full of decay and went bad. They said it was from the radiation? I was mortified. I go to dentist on a regular basis. I had floride to use during radiation, but did not use it faithfully. I guess I made a big mistake. Any one else had teeth problems after radiation?

Sorry to hear that news from the DDS. It seems surprising that teeth could decay so quickly in a few months (since the last six month check-up?) to need to be pulled, vs. just filling a cavity. Did the DDS offer the option of a root canal? I know some people don't like root canals, but it seems strange that a DDS would want to pull four teeth. Maybe time for a second opinion from another dentist? FWIW, my understanding is that radiation is a local treatment and should not impact the teeth. You may have a suppressed immune system, which, in theory might contribute. Not sure if had chemo, which would also challenge the immune system. FWIW, surprisingly, having teeth pulled is sometimes the cheapest option, sometimes even cheaper than getting fillings. If cost is the reason this is being suggested, you may have other options, such as having work done at a local dental school. Dental issues aren't fun. Good luck!

When I did chemo, I had an issue where one of my crowns fell off....the thought was the chemo impacted the glue/cement that was keeping it on.    But no decay.

I'm blaming my current dental issues at least partly on chemo, as I didn't think rads could cause problems (unless you have radiation to the mouth). I've had three crowns and a filling so far, I'm booked for a root canal under one of the new crowns, and I have two crowns/onlays pending. My dentist thinks it's likely related to the chemo as I've never had that kind of widespread decay (except needing fillings as a youngster).

My gums are also worse although I've had gum problems before (starting with a tumour in my mouth as a child) and had to postpone some gum surgeries after my BC diagnosis (now I'm postponing them until I sort out the rest of my dental problems!)
