thank you grannyd, StyleWatch People Oct had some interesting ads and merch for Pinktober and it wasnt all pink.
All I have is the ribbon pin. I might wear it,I know they will have a campaign at work but who knows where the money goes? We already have a vaccine and brachytherapy but the FDA has to approve it and to do that it has to go to trial and I heard something about a senator bringing in a bill to stop the drug companies from blockg the release of drugs and then a drug shortage caused by that to make the price go higher even tho the US citizen is paying beaucoups of dollars for each pill? WTH ppl?
-
My first "PINK" season since DX'ed & I can't bring myself to go into any stores since I saw stuff in August starting to show up in stores. I have gone a few times but only out of necessity not for pleasure! I send my DH to the stores as much as I can now!

Grannydukes, like Lago, yes to photo! You go non-pink woman!
Layla2525 : www.nytimes.com/./study-questions-brachytherapy-a-breast-cancer-.
<The study, which looked at Medicare records of more than 130,000 women, found that those who underwent the faster treatment, called brachytherapy, were about twice as likely to have a mastectomy in the following five years — a probable sign that the cancer had come back — as those who received conventional whole breast radiation.>
I've been learning and boning up a great deal regarding pinkdom as this too is my frist pink season, like julz4.
What I'm finding is the most interesting activist writing for breast cancer are on blogs by woman who have metastatic breast cancer or have died of metastatic breast cancer. These woman are intelligent, well spoken and have/had a life -- vested interest. I learn so mcuh from them, even posthumously.
Rachel Cheetham Moro blog, The Cancer Culture:
For those who haven't seen it I wanted to share a great post from Peggy Orenstein on Paint the Town Pink and the general state of Pinkwashing.
http://peggyorenstein.com/blog/please-stop-painting-the-town-pinkI don't agree with all that Peggy Orenstein writes but she, Rachel and many other women have given me pause to think and ponder, mostly about the "cure" concept of breast cancer.
As an American who has lived outside of the US for the past 16+ years (9 in France and 7 in UK, I'm married to a Brit), I have not been inundated with the pink ribbon ethos in either country. There is a much smaller pink ribbon movement here and no where near as splashed about, in the way it has been discussed here, as a brand logo.

Today's grocery store "pink" find - The Mushroom Council has provided $50,000 to City of Hope's research on breast cancer and mushrooms.
At least it's research, it's a useful product, and the price was the same as the ones NOT in a pink container.

Lilac, yes, the whole culture of BCA creates the mistaken idea that we can somehow prevent bc and always insure early detection simply by getting mammograms. I remember so clearly whining to my BS at UCLA, "How could I possibly have multicentric Stage II bc with a node with extracapsular extension when I'd had my yearly mammos?," because at the time, I didn't grasp that mammos do nothing to prevent it -- they just hopefully find it earlier. And while I pray for research breakthroughs, I believe "a cure" is a similar myth. We need to get real about finding the causes, because only then can we figure out prevention.
I'm also very disappointed in how Lucy Activewear has carried on, totally ignoring our requests for transparency. Deanna

LuvRVing ~ We were posting at the same time. Thanks for the photo and the info! I just emailed The Mushroom Council and thanked them for their $50,000 donation to City of Hope. I hope increased awareness means we all notice the legit supporters and take a minute to thank them for their donations. Mushrooms are so good for us; I'm glad they're on board with such a valuable and targeted donation! Deanna

Aww LuvRing, Shaws. Reminds me of home. BTW white button mushrooms are being studied for their aromatase inhibiting properties. Not sure though if that pack would be enough to do anything though. So it's a good pink product.
-
Here's a website I just came across that makes no mention of profits or contributions. I've just emailed them to ask. Thanks, Lilac, for the inspiration to follow up on these!
-
"LuvRving". That's a good one! It's nice to know there is some good pink ones out there!
"dlb823" similar thoughts have crossed my mind...I came here 4 years ago because of a biopsy needed in left breast behind the Nip due to yearly mammo finding micro calcifications. All was B9 then. 2 months after that biopsy I had pain/aches thickness in same breast. Again everything checked out as nothing. Every year after with still having off & on aches/pain same left breast & area everything fine on yearly mammo with the BS exam also. This year just 7 months past the yearly mammo previous biopsy area turns red & lumpy with pain. That's what sent me to the Dr to have things checked the mammo/US found a very small area that ended up being an almost 3 cm tumor (after surgery) in the area that had been aching/painful for ALL those 4 years that nothing had been seen. How? Mine was just starting to become invasive so it is early. I guess. But how did it miss something this big....even the MRI showed it smaller too. I'll never know as no one else knows. But I was the one that knew ther was a problem. In fact I some how always suspected since that first biopsy that I would have BC in that breast area as every year my eyes were always drawn to the same exact spot they found my BC mass. It had a railroad map of blood vessels there. Sorry I went on so long! But there are many who no matter how diligent still find them selves wondering how it was never seen earlier sooner ?WHY? -
Julz4 I had a call back 4 years prior to get an US. Everyone said it was nothing. I complained about a sore area when pressed but was told nothing… just connective tissue. 4 years later, same spot 6-6.5cm (both invasive and non invasive) tumor. It was in the posterior region and my breasts, although small 34B were very dense tissue.
Yes it happens. (Granted I still think this should have been caught at least 1 year prior).
-
Dr Furhman says research shows 1 mushroom a day can affect your cancer rates,so Vit D,fiber and aromatase inhibitor? Not bad for a fungus. I have started putting mrooms on my pizza cause I never ate them much before,I thk they are disgusting,no taste but can I eat them raw in a salad? Some websites say its dangerous. Any good mushrm receipes?

Here's my pink ribbon finding today: I'm a huge fan of the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)--yes, I know it's fake but it's like a soap opera! Anyway, they have partnered with Susan G. Komen so all the wrestlers and announcers are wearing pink ribbons and the rope around the ring is pink. They also have the logo on the entrance ramp. They're selling pink hats, sweatbands, and shirts that read "Stand Up to Cancer". Ugh. I thought my weekly WWE would be my escape from the reality of breast cancer.
-
Deanna, thank you for your response. The 'cure' , vs. funding mammos and education too. It seems funneling money for research is the only way forward if there is to be a cure found. And what Peggy writes is, the rest of it is noise, diverting the true aim. I posted on the Lucy pinkwashing thread, a company also owned by the same parent company that owns Lucy called Majestic that sells a selection pink ribbon team shirt wear, with no mention of any monies of said sale going to any nominated charity.
This is this weeks breast cancer breakthrough over here -- approval of Afinitor. The US approved it in July. Here is one of a few articles that reported it this week. I would have linked to The Times (London), where I orginally read this, but you have to pay to have online access: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2204798/.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
Julz4, I had two malignant invasive tumors picked up on a mammo and then biopsy, both 6-7 mm, in February. The MRI I had in April picked the over a 27mm area of DCIS in the same breast. When I asked why the differences, I was told the mammo is a blunt insturment compared to what the MRI can pick up. My previous mammo was 2009 (same breast) with biopsy, showing calcification and nothing else. Over here, compulsory, NHS offered mammograms are given once every three years for woman 50 and over and that is soon to change, to starting at age 47, every three years thereafter.
The stories of Pinktober are amazing. I'm grateful for not living in the US during an election year and now I can include the month of October ~ sigh.
-
Lago.....I'm 45 almost 46 & there is nothing dense about my breasts. They have nursed 4 hungry boys.
In fact the Dr's say my breasts are mostly made up of fat....hardly any breast tissue left....or anything dense left in them. My MRI read that my tumor wasn't much bigger than what was seen on the mammo. I was thinking maybe it just grew from the time of MRI till I had my surgery which was 5 weeks. My tumor was 80% necrosis & one of the invasive foci was due to the needle drag of the biopsy. That & it was triple negative. Who knows it's one of those mysteries.....that's why there is no cure yet. I wonder if they would have seen it the year before had they done a US. I am just glad they didn't brush me off when I went to the Dr. early to figure out why I was having those problems. All in all it is strange how nothing is seen when you & I had the pain/achyness for all those years prior.
Layla.....I love mushrooms. I saute' them in a tiny bit of smart balance & you can add garlic. I don't like them raw. You can add them to spaghetti sauce. Saute chopped mushrooms & add them to ground turkey for turkey burgers. Make an omelet with them. As for the vitamin D my MO is having me take 2,000 IU every day. My 13 years olds pediatrician also wants him to take a higher dose as he has Crohn's. He said they are recommending anyone with a disease, cancer or chronic condition to take a daily vitamin D supplement. Especially if you live in the Northern less sunny climates.
Misslene....It is disconcerting when your favorite what EVER changes it's color to "P"....because all I think about is BC when I look at it! Not what ever the Item/Event actually is about. Thus our diversion whether it be food or entertainment ends up not making us feel better!
Lilac....If you feel something before your 3 years are up can you get in to have a mammo or do you have to pay for it? I have a BC Sistah that may not be Mets to the skin had they done them every year or every other year. Also I graduated with a girl that had a DMX at 40 with her first Mammo. You just never know. It seems women are being DX earlier & earlier. But it's not being caught early though as they are more aggressive. But then mammo doesn't work well for dense younger breasts.
Someone from these boards has thought about making & putting "Think before you Pink" stickers on displays in the stores.
-
julz4 I don't know if you've seen the news but MD Anderson is reporting a probably cure for several types of cancer including triple negative breast & ovarian cancer in several years! Also I was 49 when diagnosed but no kids and family history of dense breast tissue.
-
Lago, Yes I did read a little about it. We don't know for sure whether I have TN BC as my invasive part was too small to test for or treat for. I'm in what the Dr's call a gray area. I only had to do RADS as Chemo would of been over kill & too risky for my heart for the benefit I would gain. So I just wait, they watch, & I hope what was done was enough. It will take some time & a few scans under my belt so to speak before I feel more settled. But then my feelings seem to be popular with many here. Thank You for sending that info my way. Density hides much. But then I thought I wouldn't have to worry about BC with having children early in life & nursing. BC = Unpredictability!!!!! All this goes to show that Awareness isn't so simple with so many twist's that BC has.

Ok.i wore my focktober...just ask me shit today in Walmart today in pa.a guy with 3 lassies says focktober so I'm asking you.....well I sure got the word out to all of them...questions and answers including all the pink washing...the guy asked me how do you know this ...I told them I'm a bc survivor...they gave me a hug and promised to pass the word.
I'm so proud of myself.
My daughter took one of the shirts that says
Pinktober revolution...stop pimping the pink.
Getting the word out to even 1 person meant sooo much to me. -
granny, stop pimping the pink OMG love it,am gonna look for a shirt like that to wear all over the US on vacay but not on plane cause you know how that is but all over the area and to work,I simply love that! They are starting up at work with the pink bra campaign and the PS is having several programs and thk goodness I will be on vacay during most of this so I have a reason to miss it all. I was so upset when i talked to a former co worker who had BC and radiation and chemo and I asked how she was doing when I happened to see her leaving work and thought she might be 5 yrs out and she told me it came back in the other side and while she was getting chemo the first time her husband passed from lung cancer OMG,my heart breaks for them. I was fortunate in that mine was found very early and with a lot of prayer,I escaped the rads & chemo due to negative nodes. They dont have pinktober in the UK? England?
-
They sort of do Layla2525, to a much lesser degree and one would have to hunt for it. A small selection of pink ribbon bras are on sale in large department stores (as they always are) but not much to be seen as of yet. Nowhere near the PR/Pinktober hysteria in the US. I'll report on what I see and so far, nothing.
-
Walmart in PA doesnt have anything on desplay yet!!!!!!!!!
Im home now so ill start wearing my FOCKTOBER__just ask me shirt...i have it in 2 colors......
I AM BEYOND HAPPY TO SPREAD THE WORD....
And pray I dont have to do what Ducky did with thie tick tocks.....Cause if i have to ill do it too!!!!!!
-
That is interesing Grannydukes, because Asda, a large superstore here in the UK, a subsidiary of Wal-Mart, just rolled out it's Ticked Pink line for BC charity:
All Tickled Pink sales will donate 50p (each TP item), splitting profits go to BC UK charities.
50% goes to: http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/
50% goes to: http://www.breastcancercampaign.org/
-
I found this as well:
http://www.filofax.co.uk/search/search.asp?search_string=breast cancer
(also sold at John Lewis a large Uk department store)
A whole £2. for each sale goes to: www.breastcancercampaign.org/
I don't find Filofax Uk very generous to our plight.

Pandora has promised %15 of thier breast cancer awareness charms to be nominated to: http://www.breakthrough.org.uk/

No named UK charity as of yet (product not yet listed on the BB site), if it is Evelyn Lauder, it would most likely be:The BB BC product is being sold on Debenhams:

Julz4, I'm sorry, I missed your question. I think a woman could get a mammo on the NHS if requested by her GP. There is a chain of command (so to speak) that one has to go through and your GP is the place to start.
-
LilacBlue That's nice that Bobbie Brown is recognizing Evelyn Lauder. If not for her I don't think the research dollars for Herceptin would have ever been raised. As an HER2+ gal her efforts are very special to me. She, I believe was the creater of the "pink ribbon" campaign. I was so sad when she passed.
