Add me to the list please....start chemo on Monday for the first time. I'm 35 with a 7 year old son
Scared out of my mind...praying for no major reactions as I am side effect queen typically. I have been reading all of your tips. Do you recommend to have a bigger breakfast before? My appointment is at 830. Also what day does the hairloss typically happen? Are a lot of you icing your nails? Thanks in advance. I appreciate your knowledge. -

Had my second treatment of Taxol and Herceptin Monday (2 of 12 weekly treatments). Due to my little allergic reaction to Taxol from the first treatment, I was given a real big dose of Decadron which has been wreaking havoc on me ever since. It causes sleepnessless and my skin to break out. The pharmacy in the oncology unit told me to take Benadryl to sleep which yes, lets me sleep at night but makes me jittery for the rest of the day when I do wake up. What a crazy ride trying to figure all these side effects out!!
@aic: yes, I do recommend a big breakfast. It's a pretty long day ahead of you on your first treatment and you want to make sure you have your energy. Are you bringing someone with you? That's another thing that I would really recommend. Even though I did eat pretty well beforehand, I wasn't prepared for how hungry the steroids (Decadron) the nurse gave me before the chemo would make me. I made my DH run and get me a muffin and a drink!

Hope all of you who just finished your rounds good luck with the SE this week.
Did all the women here find the lump in the breast themselves or was it a routine mammogram? I am shocked at how young most of you are, with young children.
I was having a routine mammogram . -
Mine was a routine mammogram. Felt nothing. Scary! Snuck right in on me. My mom was 49 when diagnosed but had no lymph node involvement. I don't understand why so many young women. Blessings to us all. Praying for rest and peace. Love
And does anyone watch parenthood. I love that show but hate where it's going.... -
congrats Timbek! Getting over the first hurdle is a huge milestone. I hope also that your SE's are minimal. Mine have not been bad so far. Keep up with your nausea meds, I'm mostly tired so far.
-
bear cub I found mine myself. Even after I found the lump it still didn't show up on the mammogram and I paid extra for the 3D :-/. It did show up on the ultrasound though.

Thanks for the kind words. I feel better now. Went today and bought a wig, good match to my hair.. I guess whatever control I can exert over this is helpful to me. Still real scared about Tuesday though. As far as my family, I am trying to shield them. Basically I just need them to take over dinner if I am sick, all on board w/that. I just want to maintain my lifestyle as best as I can.
-
bearcub, found mine on my own, even dr. wasn't concerned at first.
timbek - so glad you are done with the first one, my first ac next Tuesday.....just want to start so I can be that much closer to the end.
Hope everyone is feeling great.

I too like Parenthood, but almost couldn't watch the last episode. Clearly they're working Breast Cancer into their story line just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness month. I'm all for finding a cure, but at the same time I am sick of thinking about cancer, and now it's gonna be everywhere. I guess I'll plug my ears, and close my eyes for the next month.
I'm 46, no kids. Found mine on annual mammogram. Still haven't had anyone explain to me how it's possible that it can grow that fast. But I guess it's either that, or mammograms are crap, which may also be possible. Also great to find out I have dense breasts AFTER the diagnosis. Had never heard about breast density and risk. GRRR. Water under the bridge, but still...GRRR.

Well I survived my first day of chemo. Even after 5 nurses took 4 tries and 3 hours of attempting to access my port (which never worked today). It wasn't as bad as I had imagined. It was actually a nice afternoon with my 17 year old. Go figure. I had stressed myself out so much worring about having everything on the list for my first appointment and finally said I would let that go. They had everything I could and would need at the center. I was so pleased.
Has anyone else had any issues with their ports? I go get it checked out in the morning. -

I found a lump myself. It was one of those weird feelings where I knew instantly that it was bad and that I had cancer. And I had to deal with all those in the health profession that said, "No, you're too young, you have children, you breastfed them all, you don't have a history of breast cancer in the family. No, no, it's probably a cyst." And I would smile and thank them for their reassuring words but insist on the next step...the mammogram, the ultrasound, etc. And then the results of that came back with a classification "BI-RADS 5" which was 95% certainty of cancer. And there was that sickening feeling in the bottom of my stomach that yes, I had been right.
