Food steamer: better without plastic

Options

Hi,

I have been told that steeming food is a good way to cook because it preserve the quality and properties of the food ans is very healthy.

But I read PLASTIC FOOD STEAMERS (or streamers with plastic pieces in contact with the food) ARE DANGEROUS because they impregnate your food with dangerous chemicals.

So use other materials

Steaming food is a very healthy way of cooking because it preserves the nutriments of the food. So I don't want to discourage you to use it. But use safe steamers with safe materials. I spoke about steaming in a post regarding precautions for people with weak imune system.

I read we have to cook food that can be a risk for infections But I am not a doctor, ask your medical team about the precautions you have to take if your imune system is weak (Of course, usually he as also spoken about that with you ;-)) Ans ask it as soon as possible in order to have the bas precautions as quick as possible.

If your imune system is not weak, the situation is different. I read some foods have more properties against cancer if consumed raw, some other not.

So, to make a summary. Some food have more anticancer properties if consumes raw (some other cooked), but if we have to cook them because the imune system is weak, steaming is a good way to preserve the protperies of the food, but we have to use steamer without plastic on contact with the food.

Have a nice day

A

I agree. Heat and plastic is a bad combination because it can leach BPA and other chemicals. So, no plastic in the microwave either. I even replaced my Mr. Coffee with a stainless steel percolator. You can google around to find other ways to avoid BPA (such as avoiding canned foods). FWIW, there are now products made with BPA-free plastic. If possible, I try to avoid those plastics too, in case there are other chemicals that we haven't discovered yet.

You can also use a French press for coffee.

The Silent Spring Institute has lots of excellent information on chemicals and breast cancer:  http://www.silentspring.org/

Their Facebook page had something today about the danger of BPA and phthalates leeching from the containers and tubing of regular coffee makers.     Deanna
