No swimsuits allowed at Swiss spa. What does a uni-boober do?

Options

We are in the process of booking a 5-day getaway to Zermatt in Switzerland for the beginning of October (we live in Norway, so it is not far for us). Our general idea is to go hiking during the day, followed by a visit to the hotel spa before eating at one of the fabulous restaurants in the village. Kind of a boot-camp with luxury idea.

We were just about to book a spa hotel when I remembered that in German-speaking areas, they forbid swimsuits in the spa areas for hygenic reasons. This is NOT good news for uni-boobers! The spa part of the vacation is an important element, so I would like to find a solution.

Does anyone have experience with spas/wellness centers in Geman-speaking areas? Would they be shocked if I showed up naked with one breast? Would it be even more shocking to wear a swimsuit (against the rules...)? The Germans/Swiss/Austrians are very relaxed about their bodies and they think it is completely natural for both sexes to be naked together in the saunas, but does this also apply to uni-boobers???

What do you all do in other situations where it is normal to be naked? At a changing room at a health center, at least you are naked for only a short time. Has anyone strategically draped a towel over their shoulder while relaxing in a sauna? Does it work or do you just feel stressed out by trying to make it look natural?

Before surgery, I thought it was just fine going naked when it was a situation where everyone else also was. Now, with one breast, I actually feel like I look just fine and have no problem with how I look. But I remember how shocking the pictures of mastectomies seemed to me before I was operated. How much should we expect other people to "accept" us for what we are? Or are my spa days (at least in naked-spa Switzerland/Germany/Austria) over?

I would think a place that expects nudity has already had its share of flat and uniboobers, not to mention all sorts of other shapes, sizes, and scars. I say go for it! Enjoy the whole experience!

I agree.  With everyone being nude, they have seen everything.  If they have not, and you feel stares, start up a conversation and education them.

We imagine the spa would be open and accepting to all bodies, but you might send them an email to ask, if hearing from them directly would ease your mind?

Thanks for the answers, everyone! I had to laugh at the picture of a double fallen souffle!

I have sent the hotel a query so we'll see what they answer. I imagine that in answering, they may be caught between wanting to accommodate me, a potential customer, and considering the sensibilities of their other customers.

My husband says I am making too much out of it and that I should just go uni-boobed naked. It's interesting how worked up I have gotten about this question. In spite of the fact that I feel myself to be "normal", I guess I am afraid of seeing from other people's reactions that they don't consider me normal and that they think I should feel embarrassed.

Through my job, we have a masseuse that I have been going to for years. Pre BC, I used to take off my bra for the massage. Post BC, I asked her what I should do and she told me to just keep my bra on. She was trying to be nice, thinking that I would be too embarrassed to take it off. But the fact is, I had been hoping she would have said to take my bra off like always, that it makes no difference to her. It is a complicated psychology behind it all.

A German friend who was visiting during the summer asked me to show her my chest (you are right about that open German way with bodies and I was happy to show her).  Her comment was: 'it looks the same as the woman in the sauna'.

Good to hear, Starwoman. Sounds like it may be equal opportunity nudeness in Germany then.

I got an answer from the hotel and they said I could wear my bathing suit or that they could start the spa early if I wanted to be alone. I secretly wished that they would have said "No problem. Go naked. All shapes and sizes welcome" but they probably also thought I wouldn't want to. I don't know either that I would dare....

At least I have a solution to using the spa now. The next challenge is getting hubby into the spa with me. Though he thinks I should just walk in uniboob naked, it seems he is a tad shy about showing it all himself. Go figure.

I secretly wished it would not be an issue too. Well, you are in the right place to give it a try if you are comfortable. You are paying much for this trip and you deserve the very best experience!!

ok, I love the answer if you feel comfortable, then go nude and educate others. but one thing I don't care for about this is when i choose to go flat (I work with the public), women begin to tell me their breast worries, and i get a little weary of being the "breast cancer coach" to every woman who found a lump.

A couple of thoughts...You will be a long way from home & will never see these people again. You might not even speak the same language, so even if they ask you questions, you might not understand them or you can always pretend you don't. I might try it, especially if I had my husband at my side. I am glad that the rest of the world isn't as breast fixated as we are in the US. I guess that's why we cover up.

If I were to want to go a place that required no 'clothes' - I 'd do it. I don't think I ever would have in an 'open' (male and female) social situtation before surgery so that would dictate what I'd do after. I was Army and way back then we had open bay showers (Hades we had them in Jr & Hi school too) so showering would not be an issue to me with other women but to socialize with ones I didn't know - Nope not doing it. Course in years past we did sometimes 'skinny dip' with friends in the back country.

Do what makes you feel comfortable and if someone else has a problem - it's their problem to deal with, not yours.

maybe...just maybe it could be really exhilarating to go for it...but I totally understand if you want to wear the suit.

You could wear just a top?

I visited a sauna/sports club in Koln many years ago and was surprised to find that they let it all hang out in the sauna - and I mean all. Naked in German saunas usually means the full monty. If people aren't worried about revealing their genitals with legs akimbo I really shouldn't worry about the uniboob issue.

As far as I know the German spa culture has a focus on health and wellbeing (rather than beauty and leisure) so they attract a large number of people with different physical conditions.

I envy you - it sounds like a lovely trip.

I was thinking more about this, *any* missing body part would be acceptable in such a spa, they would not make a woman cover her arm if half was missing...

So go for it, or do what ever feels best. This is about you, your vacation, your relaxation. You are not there to be a pioneer or hero, just to feel calm and enjoy.  let us know how it goes, please.

I quite often go to a day spa here in Southern California and of course you wear a swimsuit but in the changing room it's open and I have absolutely no inhibition about being naked with my one boob there are all shapes and sizes and if I offend you, well too bad don't look.  I say go for it, why should we be ashamed, this is what happened to us and the Germans are very open about their bodies the spa is about health and wellness so I'd be shocked if they say cover up, enjoy your vacation.

Hey, everyone- thanks SO much for all the feedback!! Lots of interesting points being made. Just some comments:

cookiegal-  "You could wear just a top? " I thought about that, but then I figured it would look strange enough that I would feel compelled to explain to everyone why! If I wear a suit I may have to explain anyway (if I get strange looks), but I may get away with it as the "modest American".

greenfrog- "As far as I know the German spa culture has a focus on health and wellbeing (rather than beauty and leisure) so they attract a large number of people with different physical conditions" If I do dare to bare it all, that will probably be the argument that will allow me (in my head) to do it. There is a long tradition for going to a spa when you have an ailment, so that must mean that "different" physiques are allowed.

crystalphm- "*any* missing body part would be acceptable in such a spa, they would not make a woman cover her arm if half was missing..." I read a discussion here on the boards once where it was discussed whether a missing breast is more "shocking" than a missing limb, because of the sexual connotation. The ironic thing about that argument is that a missing breast really doesn't have sexual connotation because, of course, it is missing! I'm not sure what to think about that. But at a spa where EVERYTHING is hanging out, I suppose the sexual connotation argument loses validation;-)

With all you saying that you think it would be fine to go naked if I felt like it, I *may* try it! I wish I could take you all with me and we could raid the sauna together naked! But those that want to wear their suits could still come along;-) I'll report back when I return and tell you all what I ended up doing!

Imagine being in a sauna when suddenly the door opens and in walks a flashmob of breastless and monobreasted women. Ah what fun!

    Have a great trip!
