No Doctor names please.. This is to be a place to vent and have funny/or not so funny stories with your doctor/LE visits.

I saw this get well card which made me laugh but at the same time got me wondering..  Below, i changed the words around but you will get the idea..I left out the ones that really disturbed me.. but what do you all think? Especially with the LE therapist and Doctor yo-you we seem to play some crazy games to get help in certain situations.. Lets use this topic to work through some of these frustrations we have. I made this for everyone not just the family of Lymphedema followers... I sure others have what I call - Doctor Confusion - Please join me..

What the Doctor says   -- What the Doctor means

I'd like to run a few more tests. -- I want a new sports car.

Please make a follow-up appt. -- I'd also like a music system to go with it.

Let's send you to a specialist -- I have no clue what is wrong with you.

Good News/Bad News -- I have bad news

My personal ones:

You are fine, don't worry -- Her arm's not swollen, I only took out one node, it can't be LE.

That is interesting -- What the heck caused that?

Oh I see you have allergies -- How quick can I get her out of here.

Oh a friend told me her gyn doc comes into visit her in a mini skirt and high heels... what's up with that???

Leah - You are too funny - that is what I am getting at - lets make eachother laugh through these frustrations and thoughts!!!!

BTW Yes she was female.. but I told my friend she might want to try another doc.. it seemed this gyn was "my way or the highway" - never helped my friend with her pain or concerns - I referred her to someone else..

My favorite....."It normally doesn't hurt"  also " Most women don't complain about that"

I also adore my BS who said that she only took out 3 nodes.  When presented with the path report, she sidestepped about how I would probably never get lymphedema but oh here is a precription for the arm sleeves and I better get them soon.

Breast surgeon: 'less than 1% of my patients get lymphedema after sentinel node biopsy'

Translation: 'I don't follow my patients very long, so I don't know who gets lymphedema'

I'm happy ladies - you're definitely getting into this!!!

Trying to get into seeing my pcp for (Non LE side)swollen arm: Oh sorry he doesn't have any openings until Oct 2nd - you better keep your Sept 27th appt - Receptionist really saying - I don't want to find you an appt...

Other response - if you need to see someone sooner go to urgent care downstairs - Receptionist again saying - I still don't want to find you an appt...

After battling celluitis for a solid month, I asked my PS yesterday about breast lymphedema.  The fact that I had 16 nodes removed is like the elephant in the room.  So I ask him and he says....yeah you might want to see a specialist!  Is that the same as "I don't have a clue " or " Gag- I certainly didn't yank the nodes, her BS did it".

Our cancer support group is having a LE Specialist speak to our group this Thursday.  I am planning on getting as much info as possible.  I think I am a unique case to my PS and goodness knows my BS will not ever deal with it.

Here's a new one LOL - I talk to my surgeon's office about my good arm swelling - He says its probably the LE, Have your LE therapist treat it as such. if you are still concerned, call me next week. What he was REALLY saying is that his is on his way out the door on vacation and he will deal with it when he gets back...

I haven't weighed in, but as someone who works in health care, works very hard and doesn't get a huge salary, I think a lot of these comments are based on misconceptions and previous eras in health care.

Sure I've been disappointed and frustrated by my health care providers, but I sure don't think their failings have to do with avarice: it's ignorance, IMO.

I believe I was especially disheartened as the people who let me down were people I had previously trusted, and worked with.

My 1st PS-(the one that really messed up my reconstruction)

What he said at 1 week post op:  "I have never had a patient in as much pain as you, I dont know what to do with you"

What he meant:  Its your pain, its your problem, deal with it.

OK, ladies, I'm going to argue for another perspective.  My LE care was based on referral by my PS, when I was primarily under his care.  Later, when I made an appointment with my primary care physician, just to talk about LE and transfer my LE care to her, she started right out by saying, 'I am not going to say lympha-what-a? --but in truth, I know very little about lymphedema. So, let's get started--what do you need from me, and let's frame in my homework assignment for how I'm going to learn how to support you.'

Physicians get very little training in the lymphatic system, and it's easy for our frustration in getting proper LE evaluation and treatment to spill over into a generally cynical attitude about our doctors and surgeons.  I'm guilty of that, too. Don't get me started on my breast surgeon who seriously denies LE.  But let's acknowledge that some of what's dysfunctional is the healthcare system, not necessarily the individual physicians.  I was not overjoyed that my doctor has no training in LE, but I could kiss her for being so honest about that, and for being so willing to do and learn what's needed to help me.  (But she's finding it frustrating to find what she needs to know about LE...another broader-picture LE problem to solve!)

Carol, my wonderful PCP has said "you know more about LE that I do: tell me what you need" and then she does it. I know she has my back and my scripts and that's all I want/need from her at this point.

My incredible medical onc has retiredCry, but like Carol's PCP, he readily admitted he knew little about LE. Neither did his nurses, which became obvious when they tried to write the prescriptions I needed for garments and couldn't make heads nor tails of it--"Night garments? What in the world is that?" So I arranged with them for a time when I could talk to all the nurses. I emailed several garment companies and told them what I was doing and they sent me samples, fabric pieces, and loads of brochures with pictures in them of every kind of comression garment imaginable. I went to the get-together with one arm wrapped, and I brought in my own garments to show them. They were thrilled to learn about it all, and I've never had another problem with poorly-written prescriptions.

When you think about it, why on earth would they know anything about our garments? Nursing programs don't teach about it, and when would they see a patient with a night garment? Never!Undecided

Another time I had to go to the ER and didn't want them touching my arms, so I wore my night sleeves. They were dumb-founded and kept asking me what was under the garments! They have no clue. But the thing is, they were all really interested in learning. I had a whole string of both doctors and nurses popping in to learn about my garments and my LE, and they were grateful for the chance to learn something new.

When I go in for procedures like colonoscopies (yuck!Tongue out), I make sure I have a whole stack of the Jobst LE brochures for professionals (free for the asking from the company) and a handful of the ReidSleeve neon pink alert bracelets (also free), and I hand them out to everybody in scrubs no matter who they are. Last time, as I left, there was a clump of them at the front desk leaning over one of the brochures and talking intently about it. They just don't know. But fortunately we can change that!LaughingKissCool

Granted it's a bit surreal to be teaching a class in LE while flat on your back and dressed in a johnny, but hey! We'll all in this together!Smile

    Onward!

"You're going to feel a little pinch..." (This is going to feel like a gunshot wound, so don't say I didn't warn you...)

"We're going to put a little pressure on that..." (You may want to take a deep breath now because it will feel like an elephant standing on your chest and you definitely won't be able to breathe for a while...)

"No one has ever complained of that before...." (We'd go crazy if we had to actually listen to all the whiners...)

"I'm just going to step out and call the Radiologist in...." (OMG, you're bleeding like a stuck pig, and I don't want to be responsible!)

"See if you can hold real still for me now...." (What do you mean, your arm doesn't bend that way? Do you want this test or not?)

"The doctor is running a few minutes late..." (You might as well go home and eat lunch because it's gonna be a while...)

"I can take a message and let the doctor know you called - again...." (Quit bothering me. I'm trying to plan my girlfriend's baby shower.)
