Ah Liz!  My apologies... I had no idea you were still out there reading.  Thanks so much for having started this thread and so glad to hear that your life is full and that you are happy :)

Funny, I remember the day I started this thread, wondering how I'd ever get used to these foreign objects. I never had any inkling how many others of us would have similar questions! Though I don't post much currently, I am interested in everyone's experiences. Hearing from all of you still helps me, even two and a half years post-exchange!

Liz -- it sounds like you've gotten comfortable with your gummies over time, yes?  My exchange was May 2010 so I guess you and I were close together in the whole journey (you were slightly ahead of me).  I think some of the issues people have with gummies, based on my reading and sharing with women who have both kinds, are the issues one has with implants in general no matter what the type.  Some people are more sensitive to that "foreign object" feeling and others adapt.  As a uni, I still am aware of a difference (of course) but I have to say that I've gotten very comfortable and almost never think about it anymore.

My only issue is that I've lost over 20 pounds (and still planning to lose another 10 or 15) and will likely need to exchange to a smaller implant (and get another lift) later this year when I am done.  My PS is advocating a switch to smooth round, which is interesting.  I worry that I will sacrifice the fabulous shape (which is a really good match to my native side), even while gaining a softer feel.  Her reason is that she feels the gummy is too firm (she implants both types).  I also worry about less projection (not only will the new implant be smaller, if I go for a smooth round it will also not project as much as a new, smaller gummy would).  At this point a little less projection might be OK, as the native side has gotten smaller with the weight loss, but of course smooth round implants DO project less.   So much to ponder. And I'm not thrilled with the idea of more surgery either and the risks.  I've had excellent healing. Who knows? Maybe I will put the whole thing off till this one is 10+ years old and I have to exchange anyway (as all of these "permanent" implants are not actually permanent).

So I missed this on my quest for implant data a few months ago, but just found it....

Sientra [new implants recently gaining FDA approval] and the FDA state that they do not like and will never use the term "gummy bear" implants.  I think it is too late....

Lilah. It is hard to imagine going throught this again even though you have lost weight. It is a big decision but at least you have this resource in helping you make your decision about which implant to choose.

I think it is funny the FDA does not want to use the term "gummy bear". I can see why officially they do not want to refer to these implants in that way but I think it is much too common a term now to change.

I think I will eventually get used to my implants and not think about them much. I suspect other life issues will come along that will demand my attention. :-)

Janice -- hear hear on letting life become the preoccupation!

I agree -- that is funny that the FDA rejects that name.  You're right that it will stick regardless.

I'm not so much comfortable as accepting of the imperfections at this point. I'm not sure any of the softer implants would be an improvement, and I, too, am worried about sacrificing shape for feel. As many of you have echoed, you have to weigh the alternative of more surgery and unknown results against your need to move on with your life. I may try to improve on things in the future, but for now, I feel as you do Lilah, that it's best to do nothing for now.

And good luck to the FDA in trying to change what these implants are called! They missed the boat on that one!

They are firm... but pokeable, for what it's worth.  I like mine a lot!  There is no reason to worry about the fact that they are in trial here in the USA... but they have been in wide use for 10 years in Canada and in Europe.  USA is just behind.  Ask your PS to show you a regular silicone implant and a 410 silicone implant -- he should have samples of each kind so you can feel the difference.

Gummy bear IS the Allergan 410 silicone implant (it's THE nickname for that specific implant), Margie... so your comment confuses me.  You probably held a gummy/410 (which is the firmer one) and a smooth round silicone (which is traditional silicone).  I've had mine (I'm a uni so I only have one) since May 2010.  And I honestly don't know whether I would choose this again.  But my issue has to do with being a uni.  The gummy/410 sits higher that/does not droop as much as my native breast -- which I don't like.  My PS seems to think that if I switch to a smaller, smooth round silicone I may gain in the droop factor.  In a bra, though, my gummy and my native breast are an EXCELLENT match and I'm very pleased with that.  For me the issue is how I look naked; if you are bilateral, that is NOT a concern for you.  I love the shape and I don't mind the firmness, though it is firmer than my real breast.

    Hello ladies,

I'm up for my exchange December 19 2012 (HURRRRRRRRAAAAAAH!) and I'm aware that Ive got the issue of preventing rotation with my unilateral gummy, and am keen to have the new exchange & augmentation stay in place...

Anyone worn a bra with a stablilizing strap post-exchange (like this one below)  to make sure implants / gummies stay in place?

This will be my second attempt at recon -  as first went very very badly and shifted & contracted. So am extra-cautious with a non-advising surgeoun.

Grateful to hear of any post op bra advice or experience, thanks!

RubyTuesday, can I ask you how things are holding up?  If I read your post right (still learning the lingo, dang it), you had one reconstructed and the other just lifted or augmented to match? I have to make a decision, SOON, about recon + lift or double recon. I  met with PS this week and he mentioned how the lift would 'age and droop' and the recon would remain 'young and perky'. That I would need tweaking over time. Have you had this problem, or run across anyone here that has? I don't know where to look to ask, or how to search for the right people (lifts five years later?).

    Thank you!

Buddawolf -- there is a bra that I've seen Whippetmom recommend but I can't recall what it is or whether it's the same as the one you posted; definitely has a stabilizing band that goes across the top and she, if I recall right, recommended it.  You should PM her with this question and see if she can recall the make/model or anyway if she has any opinion on the matter (I believe she does).  Good luck!

    M-star,

I'm newer to these threads. I'm considering the Allergan 410s and noticed that's what you have. Your profile pic looks great. Do you remember what 410 style you have? Height? Projection? Size? Any info would be helpful.

    Thanks

    Hi Gummy Gals,

I meet with my PS to talk about actual implants on March 1.  I've felt the saline and silicone implants because they had demos when I was in previously.  I have never had a chance to feel the gummys because up until recently my PS couldn't get them (Allergan 410) because they weren't FDA approved.

I've read many ladies say they feel their gummys have softened over time, but feel pretty hard initially.  Can anybody give me an idea as to what I may be able to expect as far as firmness.  How long do they take to start to soften, and for the gals that have had them for awhile, do they continue to soften, and if so for how long?

    Thanks

Gummies are not as soft as silicone but softer than saline (if that helps).  Your PS should have a sample of the gummy for you to feel when you see him/her on March 1.  You should insist on having the chance to feel the difference IMHO.

so I met with my ps today and wasn't prepared for him to offer so many choices for my exchange.  the two leaders were allergan 45 550cc or 500cc silicone implants..or sientra anatomically shaped implant high profile..largest being 425cc... any input on these?  thanks!

The Allergan 45 is not a gummy... and I don't know a lot about the Sientra (though since it is anatomical I suppose it must be firmer like a gummy).  I do know the Sientra is a new device recently approved for use.

Have you tried asking this question of Whippetmom on the thread "Breast Implant Sizing 101"?

thsnks lilah...yes, whippetmom asked why ps was offering implants that did not match my TE width.. yes allwrgan 45 is silucone implant and sientra was anatomical, but felt softer than allergan 410 gummies.. ps thanks for pm...i think it will help a lot!!  :)  she thought gummies would be too firm for me,,and recommended allergan 20...#%$#  thus the confusion i have niw... :p

Yes I saw Whippetmom's post.  I know it's agonizing!  Keep looking and thinking and you'll figure it out.  If you like you could ask your PS about the dimension differential (width wise).

I have got to say that my Allergan 410MX 550cc, do feel very dense and firm. Exchange 2.5mths ago. Hoping they will soften.

My hubby does not like the feel of them either. They feel fake and immobile. I really miss having a flexible breast that can be manipulated by a bra. My Barbi Boobs, are broad at 14.5cm, however I don't feel I have the expected projection of 6.7cm. They seem a bit flatter out the front. Bit dissappointed. Not sure if this is contributing to the tightness and density (I feel the implant may be clamped down by the muscle).

I have to wear a D cup bra to accommodate the implant width, but do no fill the cup in projection. If I wear a padded bra it looks great, would like to look good naked also.

Anyone else experience poor projection? I am still getting regular tightening and discomfort. Have spoken to doc, he has suggested a silicone round (bit scared of fake look), or scar revision to help projection.

Feel like I am being super fussy, as they still look OK, but would like the full benefit of the implant projection.

    V
