Summer 2012 RADS HANG OUT
Comments

CONGRATS, KIM AND KAREN!!!!!! LET THE HAPPY DANCE PARTY BEGIN!!!!! So happy for both of you that your stay at Camp Rads is finished; now it's time to move on!!!!
-
Congrats Kim, Karen, and Taraceta! It is such a great feeling to be done!
Diane - Hang in there. I also had a cold during rads and found I had to have a cough drop in my mouth while on the table to keep me from coughing and thus moving.
-
I love coming on and hearing about more of you finishing. THE END seems like such an unreal possibility all through it. I am close 7 boosts/9 days.
Diane hang in there. Trust that treatment is about "maximim benefit with minimal damage" quote from my MO. Not an exact number. The numbers are "optimal" and everyone is different. See how it goes and trust your body and your RO. -
Taraceta: Congrats!!!!!
-
Stacie - the last 2 weeks really went fast for me, so you will be done before you know it!
-
I'm in that final home stretch as well. Completed my 21st (out of 33) sessions on Friday, and have 7 more full chest/armpit sessions, followed by 5 boosts. RO was using a bolus on me for the first 19 sessions, but I managed to develop a nice itchy rash on my chest area (that received quite a bit of sun in my teens and 20's), so he stopped with the bolus. I've been using Domeboro 4 times a day. It's basically Epson Salts on steriods. I soak a washcloth in it, then lay it on my chest for about 15 minutes. It's done wonders. This is followed by a good slathering of Miaderm. I didn't think my skin could actually improve during this process, but it actually has since I started the Domeboro. My underarm area is very sore and dark where they are hitting the nodes. Have pretty much given up wearing a bra except when totally necessary (i.e. leaving the house). I'm working from home right now so am able to spend most the day in just a loose t-shirt. I've also had to stop working out since sweating was just making it worse.
I read someone else on this board that radiation is like a marriage. The first 2 weeks are the honeymoon period where everything's easy and you say to yourself, "yeah, I can do this". Then, reality sets in and you soldier through the next 2 weeks. The last 2 weeks are when you decide you want a divorce.
I'm definitely ready for a divorce.

The rads treatment has flown buy. We will all be done very soon. Ordered cookies for my rad team to thank them for being so supportive when I was soon nervous at the beggining. One more boost treatment for me on Monday and then I get to ring the bell! So excited!
-
Sharon has 6 more zaps to go. She's sore and itchy in "the blasting zone". Her left faboob is about 1/2 again bigger than the right one. The skin color ranges from fire truck red to dark brown to almost black. She has been working some and is running on her energy reserves.
I will be so VERY GLAD when all of this is done. I got a double dose of the "gotta fix things" trait. I'm a guy (dose 1) and an engineer (dose 2)...and I can't fix it. All I can do is to make things easier for her...which I'm trying very hard to do.
She too is an engineer. In her case, it's nuclear engineering. She understands exactly what's going on, but she says it shocks her when she thinks about it--that she never dreamed that she would have first hand knowledge of the effects of high energy X-rays on human tissue.
Sharon gets on the site sometimes, but rarely posts.. I wish she would.

Hello Eric and Slawson. It has meant so much to have you hear with us. Glad you too are near done.
-
Eric: Thanks for posting. Give hugs to Sharon for us. You need to remind her we are not a bad group!
Raelen: I loved yoru analogy of radiation. It's so right on!
Belinda: I will be doing the happy dance for you on Monday. My last treatment was on Friday and it was a very, very emotional day for me. Totally unexpected. Just giving you advanced warning....
-
Sorry Eric Sharon not Slawson.
-
eric ; it is so right on when we feel helpless in regard to "fixing" things! sharon is lucky to have you on the journey!
my left (tx) boob is pinkening up...have completed 9 of my 34 so finally 1/4 thru...
-
Maybe I am lucky, but so far so good. 12 treatments and little change and no discomfort. The worst part is the thick, goopy Aquaphor which is sticky and has gease stained a bunch of my t-shirts. I soaked them in Oxyclean all day today and am running them through the wash now to see if I can get the greasyness out of them.
The button down shirts I have been wearing have fared much better so I may stay with them rather than t-shirts. The gease coats the inside of my bras but does seem to come out in the wash.
-
Karen, I fear it's going to be emotional...I get weepy just thinking about it. The technicians have been outstanding. Bought some cookies for them to say thanks!
-
Belinda: Good luck tomorrow! You are entering a new chapter in your life. Cry if you need to. I will be thinking of you!
PS--My breast looked pretty darned good throughout the treatment and even afterward. A little discomfort the last two weeks, but definitely manageable.
-
DONE DONE DONE. ...and I did cry. I guess we just get on with business while it's happening. It was a mix of relief, joy and stress relief.
Boost area is doing the yucky, moist yellow peeling. Doctor prescribed silvadene and I have to debrid with a mix of perioxide and water. A little bit of an owie with my open incision but I will deal with with it.
Cross posting this so forgive me if you read this more than once. Who's next to finish?
-
Yay, Belinda!!!! Congratulations on being done!!! It is a good weird feeling, isn't it?
-
I know it was weird today not having to drive to treatment! I think my boss was happy that I didn't have a 2 hour "lunch"!
I think several are very close to finishing and I'll be waiting at the finish line for you doing a happy dance!
-
Yes ...good but weird. My mind is telling me I need to be doing something to fight it. Soon will be on the tamoxifen.
Can't wait for everyone else to finish! -
Belinda: CONGRATS!
Kim: I hear ya. It was wierd, but nice!
-
Congrats to you guys who have finished, that must feel amazing!
Today I am officially halfway done... -
KCB: COngrats...You are on the home stretch.
-
Im so happy for you and will be joining you on Friday. a bit scared too bout not "doing" something... VVH
-
Congrats Belinda and onvacation! How wonderful.
My first rads is tomorrow. I'm a little afraid, just getting my energy back from chemo. -
It's September 11th. Eleven years since the attack on our great country. Prayers to all who have lost a loved one and suffered the ultimate sacrifice. And to those who continue to suffer the effects of this tragedy. My thoughts are with all Americans today.
Anyone have info on the boost? I have 8 more whole rads to go, then 5 boosts. I have been doing fairly well. Today my rash on my chest wall is really bothering me. Lots of burning and itching. The RO finally called in a script for cortisone. Of course the pharmacy has to order it. Hopefully it will be in by tomorrow.
What' s involved with the boosts? I finish on 9/28 and plan on going to Florida on 10/4. I think I can do it, but not sure what to expect at the end. It's been a long journey.
Diagnosed 12/26, surgery 2/7, chemo March, April, May. Personal tragedy June, lost my son-in-law (40 yrs old) in July, rads August and September. I'm ready for October-bring it on.
It's been a long and arduous trip for each and everyone of us. I believe it's made me stronger. I hope it's made each and everyone one of you stronger too!!!!!!!! We ARE survivors.
Have a good night.

Summer51: Boosts are just radiation to the area where the cancer was. A lot quicker than the whole breast. It really didn't affect the breast anymore than the other treatments.
I am glad you were able to be with your daughter. How's she doing?
-
My boost area got redder/darker than rest of my breast, but no pain or anything. I have noticed since I finished last Friday that area is still pretty red, thought it would start fading a bit by now!
Summer, I'm heading to florida this weekend to celebrate, I just plan on being very careful in the sun wearing a t-shirt spf 50 and a big hat under an umbrella! If that doesn't work, I will sit on the patio and gaze at the ocean with a cold adult beverage! WOOHOO ready to celebrate - hope you have a great time also!
-
Congrats Belinda and Onvacation. Summer I remember when you lost your SIL. I was so sad for you. Several members lost a family member during treatment. I can't imagine. Yours stood out. He was so young and I think it was sudden? Prayers.
I have 5 count em 5 RADS to go. -
Stacie, you are almost there!!
Kim, my doc said the effects of rads take 5 to 7 days after the last treatment to peak. Then, you start to heal. My boost area is still pretty red and peeling. Have some pain again too.
I am just happy to be able to shave my underarm and wear deoderant!
-
Kim,
Thanks for the info on the boosts. So glad to hear you have finished and you are able to head to Florida. Where will you be staying? We go the Panhandle in Panama City Beach. Love the Gulf.
Enjoy each and every second and have more than one adult beverage. You've earned it.
I plan on taking the same precautions you mentioned. If it's too much, I'll just stay inside and read a book. It will be great to get away. Just need to make sure my daughter will be ok if we get away for a week.
Have a great day.
Diane
