Lower Back Pain

Options

Hi - For those with bone mets I am trying to figure out what is going on with my lower back.  I have been having pain for over a month that is worse with sitting (especially after driving my work commute which is 40 miles each way and sitting at work).  I seem to get some relief when I am not sitting all day but there is a constant spot that the pain seems to be generating from.  I am not sure if I should be calling my oncologist or I am just being paranoid.  Has anyone with bone mets to the lower spine experienced this type of pain that is worse from sitting?  Thanks!

Hi, I too suffer from lower back pain, also neck pain. I have had 2 bone scans in the last 6 months and xrays. My onc and I atribute it to the tamoxifen.  I also am pretty active at work and I ride horses.  Are you on tamoxifen? they say it can cause joint pain and aches especially if you have had injuries or soreness before.  If you are worried call the doctor and get some peace of mind.

Thanks and yes, I think you are right I need to just share with the doctor and get some peace of mind.  It is amazing how crazy we can make ourselves.  Yes, I am on Tamoxifen which started around the same time as the back pain so that is like the cause.  I have to say I would not mind a scan just so I can rule out cancer, though.

I too am getting lower back paino and off. On tamoxifen for a month now and pain seemed to started then. A lot of people seem to get lower back pain on tamoxifen but my onc doesn't recognise it as a side effect (he says that it's my body recovering from chemo) he said if it persists they will give me an MRI but he is not too worried as he says timescale is wrong for spread just now. That doesn't stop me worrying.

Cosett, what is your stage? You'll get more response from docs, sadly, if you are higher stage. But I agree that it is probably the result of Tamox.

I am getting lower back pain, also, but I think the tamoxifen has just made my low back issues worse. My physical therapist really wants me to get a standing work station so I won't sit for hours each day so I have been looking into that.  He said sitting for prolonged periods of time is very hard on the lumbar area and to take a ten minute break every 2 hours.  If you are concerned, however,  I would definitely call your oncologist.

Interesting comment about the timescale. I wonder what timeframe they expect it. It seems some spread regardless of the time since treatment. I know it is the back and can be any number of things I think it is the way it is hurting (pain radiating from the spine) and the fact that t is persistent that has me worried.

Hi Christina - yes the sitting is nasty. Besides sitting all day I have a long commute.:(. I telecommute on Fridays so that helps. I definitely feel better when I am up and moving.

Hi Yorkiemom- I am stage 1 grade 3. I do not take the stage too seriously because I have seen the devastation bc can do. My Mom started out stage 1 as well but it came back with a vengeance in 3 years and she did not even make it a year at stage IV. I am going to share with the dr and not freak plus I do not want to be seen as a hypochondriac either but I do want to advocate for myself.

Hi Ridegirl and thanks for the post. All of the information I get here and support is really helpful. I hope you are doing well. Were you diagnosed with the bone mets from the beginning? Did they do a scan routinely or because of the pain?
