Beyond the Shock: Another source of misinformation
Nitocris alerted me to this website:http://beyondtheshock.com/learn/6/6#6/6
It is the National Breast Cancer Foundation: http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/
Their medical "expert" information on lymphedema includes a video showing a SNB being done in the middle of the breast with this accompanying text:Treatment
Chapter: 6 - Treatment
Subchapter: 6 - Lymph Node Removal & Lymphedema
LymphedemaRemoving these lymph nodes raises your risk for developing Lymphedema, a condition that usually causes abnormal swelling of the arms, but can also affect the breast, chest and legs.
After lymph node surgery if you experience unusual and painful swelling, you should immediately notify your doctor. Although there is no cure for Lymphedema, the swelling is usually temporary, lasting only six to twelve weeks. With proper health care, good nutrition and exercise it may be possible for you to reduce the effects of Lymphedema.
From their site, it was founded by a survivor, but information is put up by third parties: not really sure what the whole story is.
They do have a contact me site, and a feedback email: feedback@beyondtheshock.com
I contacted them via the site, and would urge anyone who has the energy to do so also. We don't need this "expert" advice out there to misinform patients and providers.

What a ridiculous pile of complete dog do. Can we get angrier ladies? When I calm down, I'll send an email. Perhaps the worst is that it seems so 'professional'. Thanks Kira, as always.

It was Nitocris who alerted me--from Finland, she literally has eyes on the world.
I totally agree: it looks so professional and the "National" business made me think it was a government agency.
I've got to wonder who sponsors this stuff. Did you watch the video? It was flat out ridiculous.
I sent a contact me email, and a feedback email.
We have enough to deal with, and now this "krappe"??
To add fuel to the fire, I found a Komen release about long term effects from breast cancer treatment, and guest what they DON'T mention??? LE....

Tough to fight misinformation and denial on so many fronts.
-
Tough, yes, but doggone WE CAN DO THIS!!
To make it easy, here's the information for the National BC Foundation--
The video is on their website, here:
http://beyondtheshock.com/learn/6/6#6/6And you can email a comment here:
feedback@beyondtheshock.comThey've also posted it on Youtube here, where you can register to leave a comment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9KiQDKEu7o
To protest Komen's glaring omission of LE on it's page titled "What Can I Expect? Late Effects of Breast Cancer Treatment," go to this page and scroll to the very bottom, where in itty-bitty print you'll find the "Contact Us" link:
http://ww5.komen.org/Content.aspx?id=19327354748&ecid=emklSept11:4That really is a whole lot of craziness, but TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
Go for it!

Just stumbled upon this site... thank you kira for bringing to our attention. I do not yet have LE (nor do I hope I will ever get it) but am angry at the misinformation out there. And as for Koeman... don't get me started
I will now be writing my feedback and it aint gonna be pretty.
-
This just in from the Komen folks (I hear you on that, Tazzy!
) in response to my email to them:
Dear B, thank you for contacting Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and for your feedback regarding our latest Komen Perspective's article- What can I expect? Late effects of breast cancer treatment.
For this article, we chose specifically to just focus on the long-term effects of chemotherapy and hormone therapy. However, we may focus on the long-term effects of surgery and radiation therapy in another piece, where we would definitely mention lymphedema, as breast cancer survivors usually get lymphedema as a result of surgery or radiation to the lymph nodes in the underarm.
Also, in case you are not aware, we do have a full page dedicated to information on lymphedema within our website under the Understanding Breast Cancer section, found here: http://ww5.komen.org/BreastCancer/Lymphedema.html
I hope you found this information helpful. Thanks again for contacting Komen. We greatly value our constituent’s opinions.
Regards,
EricaWhile I follow their reasoning, it sure isn't clear from that page!
And anyhow, some kinds of chemo do trigger LE when there's swelling that our compromised systems can't handle. Still, they answered, and that's a good thing.
Be well!
Binney
-
Thanks Binney, at least it's on their radar screen, although women do get LE from chemo and adjuvant therapy can make it worse....
-
Hi,
Kira and Binney, thanks for posting. It is already hard enough to fight the ignorance about LE, but when one has to deal with plain misleading information it makes it even worse.
How many of us wished LE was only temporary. Such information might give women a wrong feeling of security as to the seriousness of this disease and prevent them from seeking appropriate treatment.
A lot of battles on many fronts.....
Take care
-
Well good news so far that I met with my LE specialist on Wednesday and as of then do not have any symptoms of LE. Fingers and toes crossed it stays that way. I still want to be up to date of all the information 'just in case'.
Have a great weekend all xx
-
has anyone got a response?
-
Kira,
I did not get any answer to the e-mail I sent them.
-
I didn't either. And the video is still up there.
Please all, lend your voices here. The misinformation on the Beyond the Shock video is dangerous to women with early LE or LE risk, because it suggests they don't need to seek prompt treatment (or any treatment, for that matter--just exercise and eat right. Huh?!)
Beyond shocked,
Binney -
Nor me.... funny enough I was thinking of that this morning and thought to myself that I would send again tomorrow saying that I had not yet received a response and was forwarding a 2nd time in case they had not received the first one
-
Good idea, Tazzy! I'll do the same.
Binney -
Can't believe they used calendar pages to show that the "temporary" swelling may only last 3 months!
Also took a look at their reconstruction video & observed references to TRAM, back flap, and gluteal tissue but not DIEP.
Wonder how many other topics or questions they purport to answer are incomplete, non-factual, or both?
-
So I just got a response. I will give them a month and if haven't heard back I will contact AGAIN ! And obviously the first paragraph is the standard crap they send out as I do NOT support them... anyway here it is: I find his tone very patronizing about receiving emails from the same group. I am going to be like a pit bull with this group.... now I've got my teeth in it I will not let go !
Thank you for contacting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF). We appreciate your support of the NBCF mission to save lives through early detection and to provide mammograms for those in need.
I'm sorry for the delayed response. I did receive your email and dozens of others from what appears to be the same group, and we are reviewing our information as a result. The script and information on BTS was written by medical experts and medical writers and reviewed by a team of some of the top medical experts in the US. This information has been live on our site for 18 months, and we have never received a response regarding this topic until last week. That said, we are taking your concerns very seriously. However, please give us time to review this information and take appropriate steps. Because our content is motion graphics and video, it will be very challenging to edit. That does not mean we will not do it if it is necessary. But, we must have these concerns addressed by our medical experts. These include doctors and nurses from MD Anderson, Mayo Clinic, and Johns Hopkins.
Again, thank you for your support and consideration of our mission to save lives.
Sincerely,
Douglas Feil
VP of Programs
National Breast Cancer Foundation

Well, what a snippy email. I suggest he have Andrea Cheville from Mayo evaluate his dangerous misinformation, I have zero sympathy for how hard it will be to take garbage off the web. Yeah we all wrote because Nitocris found it. We don't have the ability to monitor the entire web for dangerous misinformation. Thanks for sharing
-
Tazzy, Kira is spot on. Can you send a response saying you appreciate his willingness to investigate, and that to help him, you can suggest some individuals at two of the institutions he named who are experts in the field of lymphedema. At Mayo Clinic, he should request a review by Andrea L. Cheville, MD. At MD Anderson, he should approach Janice M. Cormier, MD, M.P.H., F.A.C.S. You might explain that it is quite common for cancer specialists to have only a general knowledge of lymphedema, and you are certain that these lymphedema specialists will respond with accurate information that will enable him to correct the site's misinformation and suggest additional information that would benefit site visitors.
-
Carol... I will most certainly send that response - thanks fro the names. Stay tuned !
-
Tazzy, he never wrote me, and I'm also disappointed that the fact that we all wrote made this "suspicious" in his mind.
I'll send another email.
-
I'll send another email too. "All from the same group" as if we were a bunch of loonies. Our group, sad but true, is Women with Lymphedema and it pains me when we are dismissed: Blah, Blah, blah, get on with it ladies. And how interesting that he's only responded to one of us. Hmm. Let us know if you hear anything else.
-
Quail, we're members of a group we never wanted to belong to, and I highly doubt any "medical expert" signed off on LE is 6-12 week episode. Also, in the video, they show a sentinel node biopsy being performed on the middle of the chest--gosh, I thought it was in the axilla...
The "beyond the shock" or shocking misinformation is trademarked, makes me wonder who trademarked it.
I really think a third party is behind this Beyond the Shock business... Wonder what they're selling....
This is ridiculously legal http://beyondtheshock.com/terms_of_service
We had a lawyer write a basic disclaimer for the SUSO site, but we also got HON (Health on the Net) certification, which verifies the information is reliable
-
The Youtube version says it was published September 4 of this year.
Actually, the "dozens of others" in our "group" are both men and women, with all kinds of lymphedema, not just bc-related. The idea that LE lasts a matter of weeks and can be treated with undesignated "exercise" and good nutrition is offensive to all lymphers, not just us. When I posted this on discussion boards for other kinds of LE the response was prompt and united. We bc lymphers really are part of a much larger "group" than we're usually aware of. So, thanks, Nitocris and everybody here who responded, and to all you other "dozens" too! Together we really DO make a difference.
Binney -
OK - 1 week since I sent Douglas Feil an email requesting he contact the people in Carol57's email and to date no response. I think it only fair that I give him another week as he was asked to contact those LE specialists. I think that's very tolerant and patient of me... something I am not on a day to day basis
If anyone thinks I am being too patient let me know and I will happily send him a 'reminder'.
Goodnight ladies, sleep well.
-
Tazzy, two weeks is both incredibly patient (brava! treat yourself to something chocolate!
) and perfectly reasonable. Because even if he went right out and emailed all those people, he won't have heard anything back yet to report to you.
And on the other hand, don't wait any longer than that either, because the information he's got out there is certainly not doing anyone and good, and it may be doing some people harm.
Way to go!
Binney -
They are a pretty bad BC charity. They have lots of pink tie-ins but the money goes to very vauge awareness.
It dosen't surprise me the F'ed this up.
I kinda think they lie about a lot.
They are not scam artists....but they get a lot of money for not much of anything.
OOOhhh...poor babies have to EDIT VIDEO the horror!
-
I pulled out all my my LE credentials : CLT, member of a national organizations board, etc, and zip response.
I disliked them on youtube and asked that it be pulled for dangerous content....
-
Hi Ladies,
Reminder email sent to Douglas Feil just now.
Asked if he has yet had a response from the LE specialists we provided and how they are looking to amend their website.
Watch this space girls !!
-
Oh! and I am still extremely pissed he thinks we're a bunch of loony women ganging up on him.
-
Tazzy, bless you for taking this on!
I too resent his characterization of our concern as a kind of gang action. But, hey, if that's what it takes we could do that too.
Onward!
Binney -
Never got a response, but wonder what the whole trademark business implies? A source of dangerous misinformation that no one can copy???...How this site operates with zero oversight is mind boggling. and just what expert signed off on that video?
