My Sister
My sister was recently diagnosed with stage IV Breast Cancer. She is only 33 years old, I didn't even know we should be thinking about this sort of thing...
She has such a positive attitude about everything, she says it is her only option. And so I have nothing but a positive attitude as well. I know she will make it through this. She is a fighter, a survivor.
These past few weeks I have learned so much about a disease that I didn't know affected nearly as many women as it does. I feel so naive, so in the dark, and most of all so sorry for all the women and their familys/friends who this affects each and every day. I don't really know why I'm posting on here, maybe I'm looking for other stories, something to relate to.
I have hope that this will one day be something that is discussed only in history classes...that we will no longer be devastated by those words that change your life forever.

I'm in a similar situation as you. My mom was diagnosed with metastatic cancer just this week after years of being breast cancer free. She sounds like your sister--a total fighter, staying positive. My problem is that I can't stay positive about this, even though I want to so bad. And I know my being upset about it is only going to make my mom upset, and that is the last thing that I want... How are you staying positive? Seriously, do you have tips? I just joined here and I'm hoping talking to people on here and reading posts like yours can help. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you for your response, and for sharing your story as well
I just joined also. To be honest with you, I'm TRYING to stay positive. It's so hard with everything that I read and learn...I guess my only tip is this, we HAVE to stay positive, it's the only option we have. Especially for your mother and my sister. If they can get through this with such strength and grace, we just have to be there to be as positive and supportive as we can.
I guess this is why we are here, to be able to vent our honest feelings...

Welcome to BCO and my sympathies for your reasons for joining. I hope your mother and sister are able to achieve long remissions. Many women here have been stage IV for years. It's hard, because it means rather constant chemo for a long time. I think it might be more difficult to be family than to be the patient. There are some threads especially for families and caregivers. They might be helpful to you. ((((HUGS)))) to both. It's a rough time for you as well.

Thank you so much for your response Wren. I see that you are a fighter like my sister and heyjudette's mother, and that is such inspiration. The fact that you suggest it would be harder for the family than the patient shows just how strong you are
I can't imagine, even though I have tried, to put myself in the shoes of someone who has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Thank you for your kind words, and please know that my thoughts are with you

R Lee, I wish your family the best through all this. Cancer consumed our summer, but in the end we beat it. My wife had DCIS, not stage IV by any means, but still stressful. I had to keep a positive attitude for my wife and young daughter. Being her caregiver, driver and her rock. Just be there for your sis. Research is what I did all through this. I wished I would have found this forum at the start. Take care.
