For those with recurrence in armpit, how did it present itself?
I have this lump in my right armpit,DCIS side, been watching it since June. a needle biopsy in june was benign. I get another ultrasound at the radiologist OCT 10th,then see my BS directly after for results. The first 2 US showed a 7mm solid mass. I am wondering for anyone who has had a recurrence in armpit what symptoms etc if any? The lump stays tender. My primary Dr felt it yesterday and said it is still small and suspects they may want to remove it in OCT.Said sometimes needle biopsies come back benign when in fact it is not.
any information is appreciated.
Thanks Dee

I don't have much information to give other than I am going through the same thing. I found a smal 3-5mm swollen node. I has an US and everything came back B9 but it has been 3 months since I have been watching it and it is still there. When I had lumpectomy I had 5 nodes removed from my DCIS side and everything was B9. Its frusturating. Im sorry I could not give you more information.

I have this lump in my armpit, or just a bit below that I was very worried about. Onc felt it was likely B9 but wanted me to follow up. My BS wanted to operate immediately, but instead I went to the radiologist who initially diagnosed me 4 years ago. I trust him. He did an ultrasound and told me he was certain it was/is a fatty deposit. Hoping that is all yours is too Dee

The lump is still there and still tender. I can't wait until next Monday, the 10th. I pray all is well and it is just like you said fatty deposit or scar tissue. We have a vacation planned for the 26th for 10 days, don;t have time for surgery.
Please keep me in your prayers it is ok.
Thanks Dee

I don't know if you will relate to this as I hope. My armpit nodes were immediately, obviously malignant to the ultrasound doctor. I think they can tell a lot that way. But they will never say 100% sure benign, that's scary for doctors. Enjoy the vacation!

I don't want to scare those with lumps in their arm-pits but I when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had one node that had a slightly thickened cortex that was biopsied and was found to be benign, no real nodes showing up with ultrasound, one node that lit up slightly on a PET scan that then looked benign in a CAT scan and one node that was slightly enlarged but looked benign in an MRI. At surgery roughly three weeks later, I had four positive nodes. My nodes were never sore, and the radiologist who did the biopsy on the node, who also said she was CERTAIN I had breast cancer, said that she was almost certain there was no cancer in any of my nodes. I asked her if she saw nodes at times that obviously had cancer through ultrasound and she said yes...all the time. Nodes could be inflamed due to your treatment and they could be B9, but if it were me, I would either ask to have them removed or request a PET scan. That way, they can see if the nodes light up. You may have to fight to get a PET scan as they are expensive, but if you have NEVER had one, perhaps you can get one. This sounds very, very frustrating. I never felt any of my nodes. I had one palpable, movable node at diagnosis that could be felt by the surgeon but this was after all the biopsies so they attributed it to this...stage I here until surgery....I would not be happy if I had any swollen node in my arm-pit after having had cancer and I would insist that it be removed unless it was clearly, clearly fatty tissue. If it is tender, I would say that it is likely NOT fatty tissue. I hope you get this resolved soon!

Kathleen1966,
Thanks for all your info. I have asked about a pet scan numerous times .I have asked my ONC and BS and they both tell me that since I was stage 1,although ILC protocol doe's not call for one.I had 3 nodes removed from one armpit and 2 from the other that were negative for cancer.I did however develope a bad lymph node infection in the armpit that now has the lump.I developed the infection shortly after my mastectomies. I had the tissue expanders in then and was in fear of losing them. They loaded me up on rosefin injections, keflex and levaquin.it cleared after several weeks.I also had the DVT in this same armpit with 2 veins involved. I am hoping for maybe scar tissue etc.The lump has been seen on 3 ultrasounds.1 by a radiologist,2 by my BS.The US I have Monday will be by a radiologist. In June the lump measured 7mm and appeared solid. The needle biopsy in June was benign. I see my BS after Monday's US for results so hopefully I get a better and clearer answer as to what this may be. I have vacation planned for the 26th.Daughter lives in Florida and my BIG 50th birthday is the 28th and she is getting a pink ribbon tattoo in my honor and wants me to be with her on my birthday to get the tattoo so I will be really upset if I have to cancel my vacation. It takes planning for me to go on vacation,I have genetics blood clotting disorders and have to do blood thinner injections before, during and after car trips.so hopefully if they think it is anything that needs to come out we can wait til I get back from Vacation. Thanks for all your advice.

That is soo very sweet that your daughter is going to get a tatoo in your honor and why should you miss it! It sounds like they are really, really looking into this for you. As I was initially stage I, my insurance company fought hard against my initial PET scan. As you had an infection and also a DVT in that armpit, it seems there are numerous valid reason for the lump to be scar tissue. I hope that your next appointment gives you some answers! Enjoy your 50th birthday!

Just got home from my US and BS visit. The US on my armpit turned out ok,i think. The readiologist came in and felt and looked and said he didn't see a mass or anything with my lymph nodes to concern him but did feel the area I feel that is tender. He called it a ''thickening''. Said given my cancer history we are right on track to keep watching it.So we will continue to watch it.He said he didn;t see anything to lead him to believe there is any cancer there at this time.
So,last night late I had what I believe to be a gall bladder attack, pain in my upper right liver area that radiated thru to my back. it was pretty intense. I took tylenol and it helped some. I mentioned this to my BS and he wanted to do an US on my liver/gallbladder. So back to get that done, wish me luck on that one too.
Thanks Dee

Dee, my lump is tender only during certain times of the month. I feel like it is when I am supposed to ovulate (im on zoladex so no periods). I am still having the mild throbbing pain but then a few days later it does away. I can feel the mass and I am freaked out. My onco is one of my best friends so she would def tell me if there was a prob. US didnt show anything suspicious. I might have her look at it again.

I have a slightly enlarged node in my right breast, the DCIS breast.I have had it for 1 year. It is not palpable but shows up on US. It has been biopsied and is B9. I worry about it of course, but my BS tells me that I may have enlarged nodes due to the implants for the rest of my life. I think that unless you have US done, and this is typically not the standard for a lot of women having DCIS, you would never know if a node was slightly enlarged.

I just found a lump/bump in my armpit-same side as original bc which i had twice. 1st time - lump/radiation in 2000,then bilat 2006 - neither time lymph node involvement. Had core biopsy the other day - positive. PET scan yesterday - showed only that lymph node - hopefully. Seeing breast surgeon monday to discuss options. Onc. checking for HER2 - which has been neg. Cannot believe it's 3rd time but praying for good prognosis.

mine presented themselves as swelling under arm to limp on left side of neck, to mass of lumps to swithing to other side too. they were having a party. one i didnt invite them to. docs moved very quickly but cancer stayed one step ahead until zeloda. zeloda slashed them back to size then stopped working. now on new drug afinitor and aromisen and doing ..better again. those little buggers can move pretty quickly. can only feel 4 nodes right now, but that is much better to the 30 or 40 we stopped counting at. mine got painful because they got wrapped up in scm muscle and juglar vein. neck became painful and immobile. but we r on a good track right now. feeling great these days.
eat well, exercise, love deeply, and find that joy. joy in what we have done with our lives, and joy for what we keep doing in our lives.
dont confuse joy and happiness. happiness is a good hair day, joy is permanent. holding my daughter, balling over this was so joyous. it brought us to the deepest love a reltioship can go, there can be joy in the pain, for me its fullfilling..i pray for all you girls, that you can find your peace in the madness and fear..God Bless
