Thank you Jo. And yes, today is my birthday. Number 70!
-
Chabba - I just wanted to make sure before sending this to you.
-
Thank You, how did you know blue and purple are my favorite colors? I'll be retiring it soon, but for seven years I've even been driving a purple '95 Corvette. I needa car that is easier to get in and especially out of.
-
Happy birthday Chabba. I am sorry to hear about your brother. Life is so bittersweet. We are obligated to celebrate the good things that life has to offer while being thoughtful that sometimes life sends us a curve ball and it is those good things in life that gives us the fortitude to handle those curve balls. Celebrate your birthday!!!! And many good wishes for many more happy occasions!

Chabba--so happy another b_day YAY HURRAH. Sorry about your brother, he has been through this so long, He was included in the novena, as was your entire family as you know.
Granny another thread it came up about watermellons and the knife. I ran an experiment. What a hoot. I put the watermelon & knife in the dishwasher with dish deterrgent. Sounded harmless enough. Found out the seal on the dishwasher was very effecient. At first opening, melon was very soapy b/c the soap didn't wash off in rinse cycle. Took it out and washed soap off in sink. At cutting melon was fine i.e. not cooked. Crisp--no problems. Problem was I had to run the DW another 3-4 x's to get rid of the soap. LOL. Outcome, don't wash melon in DW with dish detergent.
Many years ago when there was an E-coli thing on lettuce. I used dish detergent to wash romaine lettuce, but it took three large bowls--one with detergent, two for rinsing then ran under tap, dried with paper toweling. Placed in baggies. outcome: the lettuce lasted between 2 1/2 to 3 weeks . I was a crisper at final use than beginning of prosess. But after x amount of time I just lost interest, too time consuming. It did amaze me how long the lettuce lasted. I Intentionally let it sit in the frig to see how long it would last. Could probably repeat to see maximum length of time until first wilt by just watching it.
In Low immune time I did wash all fruits and vegetables this way , but they were eaten within a few days.
Yes I amuse my self in strange ways LOL
-
Granny,Used to love reading studies which ranged from the sublime i.e over the top educational and well done, to the stupid i.e the stethocsope one. The stupid ones were for amusement. Normal immune systems can handle bugs__bacteria/viruses, weakened or non exposed immune systems can be overwhelmed. Think of popualtions dessimated to the exposure of new bugs. The Americas indigent populations and measles.
One of the major problems that has been created by the over use of antibacterial agents is the creation of bug resistance. These are the Superbugs. Mrsa and Mrse being the most commonly known. What will eventually happen is normal immune systems will learn to live with bugs that are resistant to anti bx's. One of the examples, that has already occured is in the treatment of bacteria randomly found in urine samples. the thinking now is to not treat them if the person shows no symptoms. i.e no frequency , burning, urgency locally. Also, no systemic signs of movement into the bodies circulation which would be eveidenced by fever, chills, malaise, to shock state. Systemic symptoms in this case are called Urosepsis and can lead to death. Up until recently say 5years- random bacterial findings in urine analysis(UA) was treated agressively. It was deterrmined the treatment could be worse than the cure. Outcome: if the bacteria is not bothering the patient , doctors do watchful waiting for sign/symptoms that indicated the body is not dealing with the bacteria.
We live with many bacterias on our skin Some are called resident bacteria and the others are called transient bacteria. We live with many bacteria inside of us, particularly, in the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus.
I perfer that some one do a thorough wash with soap and water for the yankee -doodle length of time_sing the song versus the use of the alcohol based and other stuff for such a brief period of time b/c there isn't the strong mechanical action of the longer wash. Science may like the stats now, but I believe it's a setup for more resistant bugs in the future.
All items--everything has bugs on them. Students of many disciplines have to produce projects as part of completion of different studies. That's why we hear so much about bugs on this and that.
What we have to do is choose to pay attention to is what will affect us. Handwashing, clean practioner clothing, wiping their stethocope, no ties, no nailpolish/fake nails on nurses and cna's working with patients, Bp cuffs not used patient to patient--each patient given a new cuff at hospital entry and disposed of at discharge, disposaple phones, no water pictures--bottled water that the container can be disposed of when empty, disposable food trays and implements, disposable mop heads so bugs aren't taken room to room, Private rooms only--no mixing of population, disposable pens, Linen containers in each room-so contaminated linen isn't taken into a common hall., A sink at entry to all rooms to allow practioners the ability to not use the patient sink. Deisgns that allow entry to rooms that reduce touchingknobs /handles. Disposable EKG leads, in-hospital Cell phone decontamination. multiple shift decontam of medication administration dispensing books/ machines, computer keyboards, charts.Much of this has been worked on in the last ten years.
In the 70's it was decreed that many items had to become individual use disposable items. At one time urinary catheters/ bed pans/basins were reprossed just to mention few. But over time b/c of lack of knowledge about sterile, clean/contaminated, clean, contaminated dirty, and so dirty that isolation techniques were needed. Superbugs evolved. Many of the things mentioned in the previous paragraph have or are being instituted. The sentence about sterile to isolation dirty is huge. If all practioners had a true understanding of that one sentence, we would not have the superbugs of today or at least not the prevalence.
This is long, hope I didn't loose readers. All this info, can reduce morbidity(illness) and mortality(death)
The common component to all is proper cleaning. An understanding by each of us, as patients, may save us from illness and death.

SAS - LOL about the melon in the DW! I understand the lettuce wash...but really! You are right that bacteria is everywhere and we'd die without it....I have an article I give to my classes about before we are born we do not have foreign bacteria within our bodies. Within minutes after birth, our bodies fill with bacteria from our surroundings and from our mothers.
Most are good - they fight off ambient stuff and also digest some of the bad stuff in our own bodies. So, sterile is no good! I just came from Africa and used public toilets - holes in the ground - with a little shared bar of soap by a cold water sink - if there was any water at all. I brought my wipes and alcohol cleanser. But I did not have a problem. Maybe I don't have to clean my toilet so much!!! :-P
Chabba, Happy Birthday. Birthdays are everything. 95 purple vette....how awesome!!! can you post a photo? Would love to see it!
I remember about your brother and I am so sorry your brother and your family are facing this. I agree....into the fire with all cancer....and these tired old treatments that blast the life out of us for a time....
Am sitting outside - it's really dark - and watching the almost full moon rise. Soon it will be cool enough to light a fire in the fire pit....but meanwhile, I am enjoying this special fire here so much.J

Chabba---Happy Happy birthday.I wish this new birthday year bring you everthing that you want thats ALL GOOD.

once again im throuing komen, the pink shit and foctober into the fire.
-
Thank you for the birthday wishes.
One day at the Senior Center I was prepping potatoes for baking. Filled a flat ware tray with spuds and ran them through the dishwasher and gave them an extra rinse. My helper that day was a retired restaurant line cook. His comment, "My God why didn't any of the places I worked ever think of that."
-
Chabba, Happy Birthday! I have a purple Ford Escort. Definitely not as cool as a vette. I hope hospice is able to make your brother's remaining time as pleasant as possible. They were wonderful with my Mom.
-
Thank you for all the birthday wishes and the concern for my beloved brother. Home hospice has been a very good thing. They are making the time he has left as comfortable and pleasant as possible. His pain is well controlled at all times. Is on oxygen 24 hours a day and regular hydration by IV but no nutrition. He gets weaker and sleeps more each day.
-
THIS circus and it's merry-go-round is going in the fire today...Enjoy the long holiday weekend dear goddesses! Next week will be here soon enough!
-
Again I thank my friends here for their concerns for my dear brother. He passed away peacefully yesterday.
-
Chabba - So sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. (((Chabba)))

posted on another thread Friday night vodlka and tonic- and angry
A minute ago, edited a few seconds ago by sas-schatzi
The worst thing in the USA medical research history was the limits put upon stem cell research. We have the greatest research capabilities of the world, the greatest application skills--yet it could be turned off by one person. Our President. Set us back by years, b/c he had a a belief. Clucik'em. Stem cell research is the future. IT IS THE BEGIINING OF THE END TO DISEASES THAT CAN BE CONTROLLED. Science research should not be controlled or limited by the government----or one person---the second George will go down in history as being really stupid about this one question, not withstanding the war. But his stupidity about limiting scientific research just was stupid
-
Chabba, I am so sorry. Grief is that sucker-punch that comes in waves, and I am offering my virtual arms to hold you, my virtual shoulder for your tears. May you find peace, as I am sure your brother has. And peace to your family. ((((Chabba))))

SAS, tell me how you REALLY feel....!

Joan811--welcome---the Sweet fire is burning, pull up a log rest awhile and lets watch the sparks fly to the skies and the twinkling stars HMMMMMMMMM
-
So I saw the BS on Friday, she biopsied a nodule, was careful to use betadine rather than the chloroprep that I am allergic to (post-BMX had severe allergic rash from chin to navel, across entire chest, around incisions & drains - followed by infected seromas... ugh!), then the nurse asked me if I was allergic to tape, and I thought I was not, so she bandaged me up really good. I have been itching since sometime late Friday night, rash all over the area of my armpit where the tape was. Into the fire with allergic reactions!!! Yes, I know this is truly temporary, but OMG, it is just miserable because I am still numb in that area, can only experience the severe itching sensation, but cannot feel it if I rub it or scratch it for relief. Just need to scream a couple of times, then will be OK. Smeared it with cortisone cream - tomorrow will be better.
New mantra: Gratitude leads to joy.
Am grateful for this wonderful bonfire into which I can toss any crap from my life.
Am grateful for the wonderful warming fire, where I can sit with my BC sistas. -
Chabba---so sorry for the loss of your brother
may he rest in peace
Aending healing thoughts to you and your family.
-
My thanks for all the continuing kindness and care from all of you.

Chabba,

Hugs to all,
Joan -
Chabba, sorry to hear about your brother. And happy belated too, have not been to the fire in awhile.
Came to toss in one broken mop top, keeping the bottom it will be good for low jobs. Also into the fire the LE and my numb arm and pit and the bee that stung me in the armpit twice, though I only felt it for a few minutes, so numb so must have really hurt.
-
Thank you Essa. Sorry about the bee sting. Those can really hurt.
-
Into the bonfire with "malignancy found" reports! Am tired of not getting B9 pathology reports.
Into the bonfire with the stacks of papers that continue to have sex and reproduce on my kitchen table. I KNOW I just cleared those papers off, stacked them on my desk, and yes, that stack on the desk is still there, but there are even MORE on the table. I am thinking they are just like cancer, uncontrolled growth. Sneaky little devils, you think you are rid of them, and all of a sudden they are BAAAACCCKKKKK!!!!!
-
Been at the sweet fire but came here to toss in my appendix that was removed Monday.
Also the large cyst on my ovary that the CT scan picked up, that we are going to watch.
Crap.
Chabba, sorry to hear about your brother.
Linda, sorry to read about a malignancy found report.
Sending everyone love and gentle ((hugs))
