So sorry to hear it. I'd follow the nurse's advice. Phone again to confirm it if you feel you need to. Take care!

What a drag, but I'm really glad you went to hospital as you clearly needed to.

Have you been getting neupogen or neulasta shots to try to prevent neutropenia? I think that's what saved me.

Sure hope you feel better soon. Hang in there!

    Hello Pinkgirl

Congratulations for making a good call! You are  in the right place to get any infection treated. Better safe than sorry!

I had neutropenia after my first round of chemo (FEC) - high temperature then chills - and called an ambulance. My neutrophils - the white blood infection-fighting elements - had gone down to 0.3. In brief, the treatment nearly wiped out my immune system in one fell swoop.

Had intravenous antibiotics, still got the shakes, more antibiotics and then recovered. Was in hospital for two or three days and then released.

After this, I had a Neulasta shot to stimulate the increase of white blood cells for round two - did not work.

Then five Neupogen shots for rounds three and four of FEC  and four rounds of Taxotere. My neutrophils went above 1, which meant chemo could continue - a success!

I finished chemo two weeks ago now and am beginning to feel great.

The treatment does seems to go and on but it does end!

    Best wishes

    Alice

Pinkgirl -  hope you're on the mend!

I think I managed to avoid the dreaded neutropenia by having neupogen shots daily or every second day during certain phases of each chemo cycle. They put me on the shots from the get-go because I had a bad breast infection, and then C. Difficile from the IV antibiotics, which delayed chemo. So they figured I was at higher risk of infection.

I also read some online information on neutropenia and tried to follow the recommendations to prevent it (probably became a bit neurotic about it but who cares!)

I ended up in the hospital with neutropenia due to a stomache bug/counts of 0.2 my first round of chemo. I got neulasta the last 3 rounds and things have gone much better. I also avoid crowds, wash my hands, no fresh fruit/veggies from days 4-8 to avoid picking up infections. Hope you're on the mend; isolation in the hospital isn't fun at all.
