Bummer of a day for me. I completed rad 16 of 36 last Friday. Last night I developed extreme chills and severe body aches. My radiation breast is also swollen and very red and itchy. My doc is concerned I have an infection, so she put me on antibiotics and I am on a break from radiation until at least Thursday, possibly longer. Bums me out because I was feeling so good until now. Now I feel crappy and my treatment is delayed. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Chapter4:  Neat Idea!

    Lumpnme:  COngrats

On a sidenote:  I got a VM tonight saying my rad appt. for tomorrow was cancelled because the machine is broke.  I am so down.  I wanted to be done on 9/10--not it's 09/11.  I know I am being a baby about this but my son is getting married on 9/15 and leaving on 9/13 for the weekend.

Boo Karen! I understand I have already had one cancelled due to a broken machine. I don't think you're being a baby at all. It's very much a psychological thing. You can your end date in mind and want to stick to it! Hang in there!

Karen: I'm sorry for your delay due to the broken machine. You are not being a baby! I had the same thing happen about 2 weeks ago due to a broken machine. They called me just as I was leaving the house to go to treatment. I guess the good news is that neither of us was in the machine when it broke!  I don't have anything as important as a wedding on my calendar but I was frustrated with the treatments being dragged out yet another day. I can only imagine how you must feel when you have a big family event coming up. Sometimes you just want to say 'waaaaahhhh'.  I had #24 today. So I'll be finishing right around the same time as you. Let's hope the next couple weeks go fast and no more machine problems.

Karen, you aren't being a baby at all!  We all have a date where you just have to get to and then we are done, and any change, even one day, is very upsetting.  I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Dianefights, I didn't have an infection, but I know that it is not uncommon. We had blood tests every 2 weeks to check for infection. It must be scary, but I'm sure it will clear up promptly with antibiotics and you'll be back on schedule.

Kjiberty I asked to skip a day for an overnight business trip and my RO gave me a choice between doubling up with two RADS in a day (min 6° apart) or add a RAD on the end. Perhaps you can double up and keep your end date.

Kjiberty. Who knew the damn machines break down so often. I got that call one day too....fortunately they fixed it within hours and I went in later in the day. I too have heard you can double up sometimes if need be...you may want to ask.

My rad office is closed on labor day....forgot about that...ugh drags it out a little but I will also enjoy the break.

I'm going for 16/36 today....area feels itchy and was bothering me last night...just sensitive. Man it really does a job on your skin...makes me worry about how they will ever reconstruct and make be whole again. :/

Hi, I'm hopping on board.  Moving over from chemo TCx4 March/April.

I finished chemo 5/24.  Had to wait weeks before my white cell count returned to normal.  Will be doing 33 rads (26 whole breast and 5 boosts to the tumor site).  Started rads August 14.  10 down 23 to go!

I use Aloe Aftersun from CVS.  It is their own brand and costs 2.99 for a tube.  You can buy it in the store or on their website.  My RO hands it out at her office. All aloe is not the same.  Make sure it is alcohol free and dye free.  I purchased a huge bottle at Target and didn't read the label.  I thought the bottle was green plastic until I used some and realized the gel was green, only then did I read the label.  I tossed it in the garbage.   I also use Miadern cream which I bought on line and received rave reviews on one of these discussion boards.

Hope you all do well with your treatments today.

    Diane

Karen & Dianne - It's like you're running a marathon and just as you get to the end, they move the finish line.  Not fair.  Hang in there!

Marcia111:   Saw that you had a consult with RO and you were requesting a list of  questions.... Did you receive them?  If you will share them, it will be great as I have a consult mid Sept.

Did you select an RO?  How are you doing?

Diane and Karen - Sorry to hear about your lousy days.  I don't blame either one of you for being upset.  I have been feeling down for the past few days and have no reason to be.  I have 2 more chemos to go and have had minimal se.  I met with the ro and he will do 28 treatments.  I should be feeling good and I'm not.  I wonder how I'll feel if something goes wrong?  I hope you're both feeling better soon!

dventi - Here are the questions that a friend from BCO suggested:

    - What is my risk of local recurrence with and without radiation?

    - If left sided, what are you doing to minimize radiation to the heart?

    - What fields are you radiating and why?

Good news!  Got it done today and have an extra one on Saturday, so I will be done on Friday 9/7.  Decided to politely whine.  I am so excited!  Who would have thought a radiation treatment would get me so excited!

    Kiss

Actually, the missed treatment was done today at 3:30.  Saturday's will bump it up to being done on 9/7, instead of 9/10.  Gives me three extra days of healing before my son's wedding on the 15th.

23/28 today. Sadly i am actually gonna miss my radiation therapist. he is funny and always makes me laugh even on my roughest days. How weird is that! i should say see yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa lol. I forgot about labor day as well so i thought i would finish wednesday, the day before my kids start school. Now i have to go on there first day of school. Bummer. As for me no redness at all and havent used a drop of lotion. I have sensitive skin even with plain lotions i break out so i was told not to put anything on until i felt the need. I cant believe i havent needed it because i have fair skin. Well i guess 1 thing can go my way. Hope everyone is doing well.

Karen that is wonderful you were able to get done in time for the wedding :)

    ((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))) to all

Glad I am almost done.  Getting some discomfort in my chest.  Reading here that one of the side effects is chest pain due to nerve inflamation.   Hopefully now that I am starting the boosts tomorrow, the SE's will start going away.

Sitting in the waiting area to recieve RAD 21/34. I am doubling up one day next week to skip a day for an overnight bus trip Sep 11-12 and leave on another bus trip immediately following my last RAD. I AM A ROAD WARRIOR AND THE WORLD AWAITS ME.

Yay karen, glad you were able to get those missed treatments made up so fast.  Sorry to hear about the set backs.  You are all strong and will get through it.  I hate it every time things get delayed too.  We have been doing this too long.

I had my first planning appointment yesterday. I have big black x's drawn in sharpie on three places on my chest now.  Next week its tattoos i think.  On to the next phase.  I was just feeling recovered from chemo and surgery too.

    Fight on ladies.

I haven't posted in awhile, but have been following each of your experiences.  I'll be at the halfway point after today 17/33 treatments.  So far I'm doing pretty good with the side effects.  Minimal redness of the skin and no real soreness.  I've been trying to exercise at least 5 days a week (1 hour at the gym doing eliptical and weights or 1 hour of walking) and I think that's really helping with my fatigue.  Am working full-time, but am able to do so from home during my treatments, which I think helps considerably with keeping my energy level in check.

I've been using Miaderm 3 times per day and I think it's helping.  Believe it or not, none of the nurses in the radiation area had heard of it (although my RO uses it during the winter on his hands).  They're all watching to see how I do with it to determine if they might recommend it to other patients in the future.  My RO indicated he normally doesn't recommend it due to the cost, but certainly believes in it's benefits.

I am sooooo looking forward to completed this last round of treatment.  It's been quite a ride over the past 5 months. Then, I plan to take a break for a couple of months before starting reconstruction.  Still investigating my options, however, I'm strongly considering a new procedure that utilizes 3 sessions of fat grafting to help restore your radiated tissue, followed by expanders and implants.  There are some women on this forum who seem to be having good success with this approach.
