Post Herceptin- how's your health?
I finished a year of Herceptin in May 2012. I'm interested to hear from other ladies who are post Herceptin in terms of general health issues.
My observations 2 months out:
1. A gradual, but noticeable return of energy levels. Herceptin fatigue gone. Now able to step up exercise intensity.
2. Herceptin body aches gone.
3. Sore throats: 2 bouts in 2 weeks with mild aches and fatigue. A drop in the immunity boosting power of Herceptin perhaps?
4. Some weight gain, despite increase in activity.
5. Increase in hair growth post tx.
How about the rest of you?

I finished a year of Herceptin in Jan 2012. My observations now:
- Body aches gone
- Fatigue gone...or at least normal-life levels haha
- Runny nose gone ...yay!!
- Full activity level back
- Heart scans/function back to normal
- In general I feel pretty good - I notice that I will have to work harder to maintain my weight but I'm not sure if that's got anything to do with Herceptin...after chemo my eating habits are not the greatest and ofcourse, let's not forget the chemopause.
- In my opinion, lingering affects seem to be related more to radiation and the hard chemo (taxotere) then anything from Herceptin.
- My hair may be growing faster but it still hasn't gone back to it's old texture so I keep it cut very short
- Oh yes and there's quite a divet in my chest where my port was.

Hi Marjie
Thanks for responding. I see that you are a few months ahead of me in finishing up herceptin. In general I have experienced better well being in the time I have been off Herceptin. 11th Aug will be 12 weeks post tx. I hope anyone about to complete tx who is feeling a little disillushioned will see our posts and feel better.
My new issue now is leg cramps from Tamoxifen. I experienced temporary chemopause but then my periods resumed just 3 months after my last TCH chemo.
I personally feel that Herceptin kept a bit of weight off and this is why it is now creeping up.I have recently joined a gym and you would think id be either stabilising or losing weight. It could also be due to perimenopausal state.
-
I'm interested in everyone's answers because I have 2 Herceptin treatments left. I have been wondering if I have been extra tired because of the Herceptin. I've been working my tuchy off so it is hard to know.... I was also hoping that the 7 pounds I have put on this year were because of the Herceptin, but I see that you both think it kept the weight off. Oops! In any case I am looking forward to not being a hospital "frequent flyer" anymore;-)

Finished Herceptin January 2012.
1. Energy returned significantly post-chemo at about the 2 month point, but I didn't notice a great increase when I
finished Herceptin.
2. Hair grew faster, between 1/2 - 1 inch per month.
3. Weight gain from chemo stayed despite watching diet and walking. I switched aromatase inhibitors from
Femara to Arimidex and stepped up the exercise and really controlled the diet - have lost 10 lbs - finally!
4. Runny nose is gone.
5. EF stayed within normal range but the last echo shows a slightly better score.
6. Still have my port.
7. I had no opportunistic infections during chemo, Herceptin, or since then. I have not had a cold, flu, stomach
bug or anything since before I was dx'ed with BC.
8. I did have some back/hip/leg aching with Herceptin that resolved within about 8 weeks after I was done. -
Krcl: You are almost there! Just 2 treatments left. Thank you for posting. I am sure you will feel less tired once you are finished with Herceptin. My weight is on the increase but my diet suffers a bit during the school summer holidays. I am determined to begin rigorous training in Sept when the kids return to school.
Specialk: Some similarities between our observations. Well done at your weight loss. Are you following a special diet. I feel terrible this morning. DH's birthday last night so had pizza followed by chocolate cake. Ahhh!!!!!!

Bump. Hoping to catch the eye of more post-Herceptin women (and men).
-
Hello Ladies - I am still on Herceptin: 4 more to go including the one next week. I am almost done too, Krcll. Woohoo! Otherwise, I gained about 10 lb too. It cannot be from food or the lack of exercise. I eat healthy (macrobiotics) and work out almost daily (biking every day to work, swimming and doing yoga) depending on how much my joints hurt. But there is a significant improvement on my joints when I drink my fresh ginger tea. For some reason it dissolves joint aches and inflammation. My energy levels are great otherwise. Occasionally, however, I get a bit of tired, but I think it is from working out too much.
Hello to Special K - I heard that you and some of the other ladies had a reunion. We have a FB motivation group to exercise. If any of you Ladies would like to join, I will be happy to add you. We have a closed group of about 22 women in our group.
-
survivorwoman - Hello! Good to see you and read that you are doing well! You sound busy and healthy! We had a nice lunch with Florida ladies, pics are here:

I feel great, except for residual neuropathy in fingertips and toes. But nothing that gets in the way of anything!
-
I finished chemo jan 2011, and herceptin Nov 2012. Hate to be the downer Dora , but I still have significant side effects. I'm not sure if it is from the herceptin or the taxanes.
1. Energy level has never returned to normal. I can only work about half time now and that is tough for me
2. Joint pain and stiffness in my hands, feet , neck hips and other areas when I am extra tired has never gone away and is significant . Even affects my sleep.
3. Finally got down to pre diagnosis weight and had to work hard to do it! I think the weight gain is mainly because of being plummeted into menopause. Really had to adjust my eating patterns, but probably all for the better anyway
I am beginning to wonder if my persistent side effects may be long term and a result of some other condition . No one really knows. I don't want to discourage others, I truly believe that in most cases the side effects go away. It can be a bit depressing to think I may have my issues long term, so I wanted others to know they are not alone if they too have continued side effects.
Take care everyone,
Christine -
I am curious about your recovery from side effects evergreen - I havenot started chemo/herceptin and am recluctant to do so because i have lived for 40+ years w/o visiting doctors very much at all. I am looking to change my diet to raw foods or macrobiotic to ward off the need for chemo/herceptin but am finding it hard to locate a support network. Did you change your eating/lifestyle, if so in what ways - if not did you already have a pretty decent healthy regiem all of your own before chemo/herceptin treatments? Thank you for your discussion!
-
I just wanted to say that I am 3.5 years out from last Herceptin and although I had some of the typical side effects I've read about here on this board.....I can honestly say now I feel completely back to normal (even better) with absolutely no cancer issues whatsoever. I feel it is important for the post herceptin recipients to respond to this post (especially longer terms) as typically, when most who are doing as well have moved on and don't post as often.
-
Thanks for posting mountains. I agree that it is helpful for long termers to post. Great to hear you are doing so well.
Liz
-
Thank you too Liz, it's hard to believe I am a "long termer" now. It really does get better and better.

It took a few months after Herceptin to get my immune system back. I never would catch colds but on Herceptin I had one really bad one last August (still on Herceptin) then another 2 months later. Haven't had once since.
Numbness (nueropathy) left heel but that's from taxotere
Yeah I put on a few pounds but I attribute that to chemopause. Need to loose 3-5 lbs so I can't really whine about that. I still bought my first pair of skinny jeans at the gap and they were a size 6L! I'm 5'6" so size 6 sounds good to me.
The stiffnes I have is from ESD (estrogen sucking drug: anastrozole)
nail issues but that again is from taxotere
thinning of eyebrows but that too is from ESD
minor LE in left arm
------------------------------------
Overall I would say that I don't have any left over SE from Herceptin. Also in spite of my list I feel just fine. I think in 3.5 years when I get of this ESD I will feel even better.

jackboo - I just realized that I never answered your question about diet! Yes, after trying with walking and just being careful with what I was eating and not losing an ounce, I started walking farther (4 miles at speed) and also becoming more restrictive with diet. For the most part, I avoid dairy, grains, sugar, alcohol, caffeine. I eat lean grass-fed beef, organic free range chicken and eggs, organic vegetables, and high fiber fruit. My cheat is coffee but I have cut back to 1-2 cups a day. I use coconut milk in the coffee, but have also used almond milk. The bonus is that the gluten-free aspect seems to have helped with joint pain and my DH is following this diet as well. He has also lost about 10 lbs. He has difficulty exercising during the week due to work hours and commute, so he had noticed a creeping up of his weight (due to being 50+ and a lover of ice cream!) - he used to run marathons but has now had knee surgery so can't put in that distance anymore.
-
Hi Ladies! I am a 3 year survivor, finished herceptin in January 2011, so 1.5 years ago. I had lots of side effects from taxane, neuropathy and joint pain, and heart trouble (decreased LVEF) from the herceptin. My LVEF has finally gone up after over 2 years of being at 50% it is now 58%, and my joint pain is much better, neuropathy better but some days better than others. I didn't gain weight on herceptin, but have now gained 8 pounds and can't seem to lose it in spite of exercise. I plan to step up the exercise and cut down on food this fall and try to lose them. My nails are still brittle and split easily so I think that may never go away. I'm on tamoxifen for almost 2 years now and they want to switch me to aromatase inhibitors which I don't want due to joint pain on chemo. I will try it and told my onc if I have pain I will go back to tamoxifen. Have hot flashes on it but otherwise it's okay. Maybe that's why I have gained weight. So generally I feel good, happy to be alive and mostly pain free!
Keep hanging in there everyone and it will get better!

I finished Herceptin in January this year. I found that my hair started growing really fast. I had 2 very small shaping trims in between finishing chemo (Feb 2011) and finishing Herceptin, but once the Herceptin had stopped I was getting it cut every 4 weeks. I didn't get the runny nose thing, I had the opposite - hard dry crusty nose - and that stopped about a month after.
As far as stiffness and joint pain - hard to say. The stiffness was a lot less, but I had gone onto Arimidex in March last year and it gave me so much joint pain. I switched to Aromasin recently - and now I feel like a new woman, the stiffness has decreased significantly. Swelling has gone, I have more energy than I know what to do with lol, have lost 12kg - sorry not sure how many pounds that is lol - but a lot! I was getting quite fatigued by the end of the Herceptin - and that went away too - fairly quickly if I remember.
One thing that hasn't improved an awful lot is my memory lol - still forget the silliest things - but that's just being post menopausal.
I never had much of a problem with my heart - LVEF was always around 65.
So for those of you still on it - hang in there - compared to chemo it's "easy" but you will improve a lot when you've finished.
Trish

sarahmb I sent you a PM about brittle nails.
-
I had 4AC and one year of herceptin which I finished in February 2008.
I feel great. All my herceptin side effects (drippy nose, brittle nails, slow growing hair, achy knees) resolved within one year of finishing the herceptin.
I exercise daily, have energy, sleep well and managed to lose the rest of the 100 lbs I had set as a goal for myself before I was diagnosed with BC.
-
Hi,
I started herceptin Oct. 2011 and they discontinue it May and July because of heart problem (result in echogram0 but I dont feel any problems that they were asking. I feel good. i walk, jog and thats how I lost my 15 lbs I gained last year. Im back to normal routines but I still need to finish my herceptin this january. I dont have that side effects with my Ac and Taxola nd Herceptin except brittle nails. My hair is 2inches long now. I stop my other chemo last dec. It will really take 6 months to have a short sassy hairstyles and based on my growth I expect that in december I will have it in my jaw level. I cant wait for that time. I eat more to loss more weight. See Im the opposites eat more to weigh less. From 155 down to 135. I got married last June so I think I have motivation to drop those excess pounds to fit in my wedding dress. Right now I gain 5 lbs because I went for a vacation but other than that everything is normal.

Dear Lilbitosuns,
I was a fairly healthy eater prior to cancer, never smoked, was retired and gardening a lot.
But I am paying more attention to diet and fitness: went from red meat once a week to not at all, eat chicken once a week, fish twice, and otherwise eggs, tofu, etc. I have a list of foods I try to eat regularly, each day- only whole grains, fruits such as berries, stone fruits, citrus, apples; omega3 fish, green tea (sensha variety) three times daily, nuts, cabbage family, coloured peppers, portabella mushrooms, garlic and onions, cooked tomatoes in some form, turmeric-1tbsp. No sugar or alcohol at all. This diet is based on a book called Foods That Fight Cancer, by Dr. Richard Beliveau, a Canadian researcher. Find it on amazon.com
I try to exercise daily. Right now that is swimming, about 25 minutes a day.
I find that the above is keeping me at a proper weight and feeling more fit than 20 years ago, when I was working long hours at a high-stress job. Probably why I ended up with this disease?
But I am realistic re my odds. I just feel I have to do something that I hope will make a difference? -
I want to encourage you to do both-that is, keep up with your healthy macrobiotic diet and also do the herceptin/chemo regimen thae doctors recommend. That is what I have chosen, to not deny the treatment. It will be a disruptive year of very rough digestion and frustration with fatigue but I think well worth it if I can have a cure. I bought The Cancer FIghting Kitchen cookbook and it is encouraging. Food is fuel and it helps us maintain strength to get through the chemo treatments. Lots of dark leafy greens, like kale and broccoli, along with high quality proteins, and of course organic fruit smoothies, also kefir, are the superfoods. Best wishes.

HI ALL, I AM JUST ABOUT BACK TO PRE-BC. HAIR STARTING GROWING IN REALY FAST AFTER 6 MOS OR SO FINISHING H, AS WELL AS NAILS ARE ACTUALLY GROWING IN STRONGER. ALL OTHER SXS ARE GONE. EXCEPT TO MILD NEUROPATHY AND MILD WEIGHT GAIN THAT I ATTRIBUTE MORE TO BEING POST MENOPAUSAL MORE THEN ANYTHING ELSE.

I had a lumpectomy done on 8/9, and my MO appt is this week. I know I will be having chemo w/herceptin. I see your dx is very similar to mine. Can you tell me how long you had the chemo? Was the herceptin infused at the same time? Is the herceptin given alone after the course of chemo is completed? I know mine may not be the same as yours. I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can. Thanks for helping.
-
Waitingforthenextstep - Everyone's chemo "cocktail" is different. I know when I had mine, I had 6 rounds of FEC-D chemo (every 21 days) them my herceptin started with round 5 and continued on the same cycle until I completed the 18 tx's (about a year).
-
Waitingforthenextstep I had TCH X 6 every 3 weeks then 11 more Herceptins every 3 weeks. I know another gal with the same onc who was HER2+ but horomone - (and node positive but same size tumor as mine) had the same cocktail as I did. There are several different cocktails for us HER2+ gals. Be sure to ask about the long term SE with all the chemo options. They all have some long term SE although you might not get any, some are very minor.

Hi to all ,
I finished my herceptin January of 2013. They gave it to me for 2 years. After six months my nails and hair are in good shape. I never felt fatigue with hercept. Im taking Q10 for my heart and I been proactive with my nutrition. I seldom eat meat, chicken or eggs. Mostly I will put my kale, beans, mushroom (shitake), spinach, strawbeery, blueberry and banana and flax seeds in my nutribullet and thats all my food for morning aftrenoon and dinner. All blended vegatable and I never felt any of those side effect mentioned. Never get any flu shot and I never get sick since I was diagnosed in 2011. Started my chemo in Aug with AC, herceptin, taxol and I forgot the other one but because of the good nutrients Im taking in. I dont have that side effect. Now I lost 20 lbs. in 3 mos just eating thsoe food I mentioned. My kidney was never damaged by any of those chemo and Im not taking any meds with anything. Nobody can tell that I had cancer before and it was stage III. I just came from my onco for follow up check up and she told me my weight and energy level was all good and excellent. The problem with my sleeping also went away once you stop taking those chemo and eat food that can help you relax. No more pain and even my stress level went down too. Im happy right now. Before I am so depressed and scared and the post of a long time survivor calmed and give me hope so I just want to inspire.

I finished Herceptin in February of 2010 so I am three + years out.
1. Hair growth is back to normal.
2. Hair texture...blahhh my hair went from being dry all the time to being greasy all the time..ewwee
3. Started back working out and it seems to take a bit longer to recover but I did have TCH and I am almost 5 years older
.
4. Muscle aches that I had during chemo/hercepting are gone.
5. My toe nails still suffer but I think that is from chemo. I actually get holes in the base of the toenails so they are funky.
6. Watery eyes=GONE
7. Weight gain was taken care of with T25 workout. In the past I worked out and gained weight, I have lost 15lbs in 8 1/2 weeks along with over 10".
-
I finish all my treatments in July of 2012 which was chemo radiation and a year of herceptin. Then I was put on the drug tomoxfien which has been horrible had all kinds of side effects went off it two weeks ago already feeling better.this drug is bad.health is good.
