Summer 2012 RADS HANG OUT
Comments

Hi ladies, I have my RO appointment tomorrow for planning. I am about 2 weeks out from my re do lumpectomy so I wont start for a couple more weeks likely. but it is looming.
Dianefightslikeagirl, I am encouraged to hear that you are running during rads. I havent run since i started chemo in febuary but really want to start once i am more healed from surgery. How is it going during rads for you? any tips?
slak, my thoughts are with you for your biopsy. chances are it will be fine but glad that you are getting it checked out. fingers crossed for B9!
-
i bought Tom's last nite and didn't realize til this morning it still has aluminum.....
-
The deodorant is aluminum-free, but the antiperspirant has aluminum.
-
slak- Still hanging out here and reading how everyone is doing. Glad you did fine with your rads. It's always good to know everyone is doing well here.
I'll be thinking about you next week when you go in for the biopsy. Sorry you are having to go through this but better to know and find out what is happening than to wait. That way, you will know what the next step is. I had a left UMX w/o recon this past April. At that time, i couldn't have a TE placed because of a breast infection just prior to surgery. I've been fine without the recon and probably wouldn't have had any recon anyway then since I was just too overwhelmed with everything at the time. Since then, I doubt that I ever will have a recon since I don't like the idea of hiding anything behind an implant and I'm okay with my body. I haven't gotten a prosthetic yet and don't know when I will get around to doing that. I've just learned how to be more patient and not rush into anything that I don't have to do too soon. So Slak, I send you lots of HUGS and lots of positive calming and healing prayers, thoughts and energy and hope the tests results are good.
-
slak - So sorry to hear about your "good" breast. I hope it turns out to be okay.
stacie - You have me curious about your diet also!
-
Me too on the diet...
-
Hi slak
I was wondering how bad your skin got. I just finished my last boost yesterday and my skin under bra line and armpit are raw, peeling, painful and badly burned. Did you use the mederma on open skin if you had any open areas?
I hope all goes well with your biopsy. Its good youre getting it checked instead of waiting.
Thanks -
Slak: Keeping you in my prayers on the "good" breast.
Stacie: Yes, what's the diet?
My skin is still holding up pretty well after 19/33. Holding my breath is stays decent the entire time. Wishful thinking, I know.

Hi again everyone..
A couple random things.. I tried Toms deororant but it discolored my underarms! Turned them brown! Yuck! I thought I was crazy until I googled it and learned that this happened to other people too. Very strange! I then switched to crystal deodorant and everything is better. :-)
Jpmom- I ran.. Well really Treadmilled with an occasional short jog off and on thru chemo. But it was hard bc chemo basically kicked my butt! Once chemo was done, instartedback slowly. I started with mostly walks and mixed in some jogging. I also started back biking again which has been wonderful helping with strength and endurance. I try to do something every day.. Biking, walking, or run/walking and just increase when I can. I can already tell I am getting stronger and I can run further with each passing week. I use the free app.. Mapmyrun to keep track of my exercise and it makes me proud to see my progress. Exercising thru this junk is honestly keeping me sane! I'm not back where I want to be yet but it's a start! You can do it! Just start slow and be easy on yourself! good luck!
Slak-lots of prayers and well wishes sent your way! -
slak - sending positive vibes your way!
Hi Melrose! Thought of you today driving home from MO - cut through West U to avoid some traffic! Hope you are doing well!
-
KCB I am a freckly redhead. I call it The Hunter-gatherer diet--
I eat mostly whole foods, 60% fruits n vegies including juicing; 30% whole grains, nuts, low/nonfat dairy, and lean organic meats, limit beef to 3-4x month, and 10% crap I shouldn't eat including 1-2x sweets per week and mexican 2x month. -
Stacie: wow! Thanks for sharing that... you have some serious discipline, my friend. I could say I'm not too far off that, I eat mostly whole foods too, and trying to do better with organic everything, but it's so expensive... to be honest I'd need to up the fruit/veg, and I know I have more than 2 sweets a week. Though often it's dark chocolate...which is less bad...?(she says hopefully)
happy to hear that your skin's doing well...
-
Your welcome. Dark choc doesn't count. It's anti inflammatory. I forgot to say I lost 30# this year, size 8.
-
Congrats on the weight loss. Yay about dark choc. Mmmmmmmmm.
Off to rad #3. -
Thanks everyone for the well wishes...I should know in a week or so if there is anything lurking.
Ulightup - I was told by the RO and nurse that my skin faired better than most. I was very red by the end of the boosts, but I would not say I had open sores. I peeled a fair bit, but the skin underneath was dry. I found the Miaderm very soothing and kept the irritation of my bra to a minimum (though where the bra put pressure on me was where the skin was the worst). I was told that my skin could get worse after rads was over and possibly crack in places, but it didn't. I was likely just one of the luckier ones to fair so well. I hope yours does not get any worse and you heal quickly! Also I should mention that I have had flares of swelling and pain after rads that come and go which I was told is normal. I also got extremely tired (sleepy which was different than my chemo-fatigue) after rads was done, whereas I was not at all tired during it. I think everyone is different. Hang in there!
-
Slak, thinking of you!
Im am fair and freckly as well. I just did treatment 18/30 and am starting to get red. No pain. Using the aloe and miaderm. Dietwise I lost weight before my diagnosis so thankfully have changed my eating habits. They do advise on more protein to promote healing. I SO wish I could afford to by organic meat. I do sometimes. I am buying organic milk and eggs though. I eat 3 eggs every morning. It really keeps me from starving throughout the day. I also stay away from processed food. I had horrible eating habits too. I am sure part of the environmental factor for me was all of the chemicals and hormones in food I was consuming.
By the way, dark chocolate NEVER counts and is it's own food group.

at Belinda.
-
Thank you slak. That was very helpful information.
-
Stacie and Belinda: Dark Chocolate is a vegetable as it comes from the cocoa bean.
My armpit hurts! Feels like a razor burn. 20/33 done.
-
I finished today, no problem with my skin but still got very burn't throat.
Good luck to everyone
I have got to the finish line....... -
Ali: Congrats!
-
Karen, my armpit feels the same, doesn't really hurt, but it does have that razor burn sensation. Spot on the chest is pinky/red but just keeping it lubed up and hoping for the best!
-
Kim--Exactly.
-
I have my consultation with the RO tomorrow. Does anyone have any suggestions of questions I should ask?
-
Good luck tomorrow! I had my list of questions with me, but they were very basic because I learned so much from this site. How long, what to expect, side effects, things I can and can't do etc.
-
onvacation - Thank you!
-
ali yay!
-
Just finished 13 of 33 today and really no problems yet. Could I be that lucky to the end?? Armpits seem fine so far. I wonder if it's the angle of the rays or the skin reaction.
I had all my questions answered by the nurse before I even saw the RO. I think rads are much more standard. Certainly a lot easier than chemo!!
Hope everyone has a great day tomorrow!!!! One more to cross off the list. -
hello everyone. im new here. im on 18/28. slightly red but no pain, extremely fatigued though. i feel like a lazy bum. I didnt have to have chemo so i feel like everyone thinks i shouldnt be tired. even though it affects everyone differently, dr told me some people that didnt have chemo have a harder time with fatigue during radiation because your body isnt used to changes in cells and stuff. who knows. Either way it goes by fast so I hope to get back into the swing of things soon. sore throat too. rad onc said it could not be from the radiation because of the angle but i truely believe it is.
Marcia1111 good luck
-
taraceta: My RO also told me that people who have never had chemo tend to complain about fatigue more often than those who do. He thinks it's because when those of us who have chemo are so worn down and fatigued, this is basically a "walk in the park" as far as fatigue goes compared with chemo. I am doing 21/33 today and so far, just a little tired, maybe in the middle of the day, but nothing I can't handle. Ihope you mentioned the sore throat to your RO or nurse.
