Progesterone use after IDC treatment?

Options

Hi.  Just wondering if anyone is using bioidentical progesterone cream after being diagnosed/treated for IDC?  Estrogen Receptor +.   I was diagnosed Nov 2010...right side mx Dec 31st.  Reconstruction (and lift) May 2011. I am having such an awful time with vaginal dryness.  I have used Replens but it just isn't doing the trick.  A nurse practitioner recommended bioidentical progesterone cream but I am hesitant as I do not want to do something that will cause an increased incidence of reoccurence.

I had to discontinue anti-estrogen therapy because of severe side effects...only took them for about 9 months instead of the recommended 5 years.  I would appreciate any info/experience anyone has.

Thanks so much!  What a crazy ride!

BTJ, I'm not familiar with bioidenticals but I'm aware that there have been extensive discussions by experts on the 'Natural Girls' thread - maybe if you searched 'bioidenticals natural girls' you'll be lucky to hit the huge thread in the right spot or maybe there have been other threads specifically discussing this.  Hoping someone more knowledgeable will come along. Yup, crazy ride alright !

I used bioidentical prigesterone after my dx in 2004. I'm not sure how long but I would say at least 2 years. I was taking that and maitake D fraction instead of tamoxifen. I stopped both after a few years because it became expensive. As you can see my cancer did come back after 7 years. Its hard to know if its because I used those things or if its because I stopped them or if it didn't make a difference at all. I thought I had a really good shot at this not recurring but I guess you never know. Sneaky sneaky cancer....never trust it! I did a lot of research and felt comfortable doing it, but a lot of people don't agree with it. I am doing the maitake again though. The way the Dr explained it to me was that the estrogen is what tells the ceels to grow and the progesterone is what tells them when to stop growing. So if u have progesterone receptors it is theoretically a good thing to take because the progesterone will do the job. Hopefully someone else will reply as I'm probably not a good example. Good luck to you! Heidi

I was thinking that since I am PR- that it might be ok to use the cream since the info I keep finding says that PR keeps estrogen production down.  Will try to find the 'bioidenticals natural girls' thread.  Thanks.  Sorry you, and so many others, have gone through so much.

BTJ, I'd strongly suggest finding a naturopathic doctor with oncology knowledge and getting a Complete Hormones Assessment Test done to find out what's really going on with your hormones.  Early in my bc journey, I was influenced by some discussion about progesterone and Dr. Lee's book on the Natural Girls thread here, and I actually tried it (self-RX'd) for a while.  But when I met with the Integrative specialist @ UCLA, she convinced me that the relationship between hormones and bc is very complex and not totally understood by anyone including the PhD researchers, and that dabbling with progesterone -- while it sounds logical because it's protective, and especially if you are PR-, may not be as clear cut as it appears.  I also asked my onc about it, and he commented that they use to RX progesterone prior to Tamox & A/Is -- and that it worked for awhile, but eventually the bc would come back.  Obviously, this was before today's more targeted therapies, but still food for thought.

I eventually started going to a naturopathic doctor who has me on Testosterone and DHEA, both of which I was very low in.  But I actually wasn't low enough in Progesterone to add it.  But that complete hormones assessment test and someone who totally understands can be really beneficial in figuring out what you need.

Also... vaginal estrogen suppositories are great for the other issue.  I get mine from Helen Pesanti, MD in Newport Beach.  You can google her... she has a website with lots of natural products, and there are other on-line sources for them that may be priced a bit lower. None of my docs object to the very small amount of estrogen in those, which evidently doesn't get absorbed beyond that area, and they work great.    Deanna

I was low in progesterone and have been taking the OTC ream with both docs' blessings for quite a while. Progesterone doesn't do anything for vaginal dyness tho.

I did the estriol vaginal suppositories but they are easy to forget and thus don't work Embarassed

This time the obgyn wants me to use some inserted estriol ? vaginal ring. At least it's covered by insurance.

Natty Groves:  I used the estra-ring for a while when I first began menopause...worked for a while.   A close friend had a very humorous encounter with her husband...let's just say he "grabbed"  the golden ring!  Good luck with it!

Ruby, you rascal! Where can I get a case of scream cream?

BTJ, You mean this estra-ring is a movable part? Eek. I don't need my hubby mining for rings in my downtown area Laughing

I'll ask the gyn if she can plaster the ring in place Cool

Or maybe it would be easier to remember to use the estriol suppositories. I confess a number of us Natural Girls use them on our faces. I don't know who started that estriol on the skin idea but I owe her a bottle of Champagne.
