I'm really looking forward to learning to use my Janome so I can sew jackets, AND embellish with beads too! i just love playing with them, redegisning necklaces I made years ago. Very stimulating, and builds creativity, I think, "playing" with them.
What kind of fiber art do you do? Display? Wearable? Functional??? I have so much saved material, and I'm eagere to make jackets for myself - very VERY basic, almost "kimona" short style - haven't faced the pattern selection yet. At the clipping things I like out of magazines stage.
-
I just discovered magnetic closures for jewelry at JoAnn's. I'm going to try that next for my bracelets. Put one magnet on either side of the bracelet, then magnetize each end of the beads. I'll see if they're strong enough to hold during wearing and report back.
-
Wren, I'd like to know for sure!!! As I get older and my arthritis worse, there are necklaces I can no longer wear unless someone younger and more flexible than my DH and I are around to do it up!!
Sunflowers, hope you're sitting down...did you know that you can sew buttons on with your machine???? Some beads too, probably. Check out the zig zag section of the manual....

oooohhh...Barbe - I can't WAIT to take a sewing class in the fall to learn how this Magic Thing really works - did I tell you I got the Janome S500. 25 stitches, 1 step button hole, drop in bobbin, and seems easy..right now I'm just playing - with muslin & all the stitches...my "shawl" looks like a Jackson Pollack in all colors!
Wren - I've only tried those closures on a necklace, and it wasn't strong enough - but I have the same problem as Barba, and don't wear bracelets, except on elastic..ugh! Michaels Arts & Crafts also has a lot of jewelry now - and coupons, of course! You can get them online at their website. Free.
-
Our Michaels went out and JoAnns fabrics is opening there on the 27th of July. I"m anxious for them to open. I do miss Michaels.
I have a few magnetic bracelets and necklaces. They work for me and haven't lost anything. My friend however did loose a pink crystal bracelet that our friend made for her when she got BC. It was found in the restaurant and she thinks she didn't have perfectly together....and maybe the two magnets weren't lined up right. She hasn't had a problem since.

Hi, artsee,
I've been watercolor painting with a friend who has a studio. She's been studying it for years, really interesting to learn while someone is DOING the painting, and encouraging me to do SOMETHING every day...got my sketchbooks ready..
I'd be very careful of those magnet closings - I much prefer crimps, more difficult to do, but in the long run much MUCH safer.
-
Our message to you was a sincere attempt to remedy a situation that was not apparent to us and that was being publicly discussed. We were simply asking for insight. Just trying to help.

I am in the dark..no knowledge of anything...
-
I know nothing, but would HATE to see Sunflowers gone!! Please let ONE of her stay???
-
that's reasonable.. one of her.
-
She has been positive in all the posts I've read. I hate to see her gone as well.
-
Sun...so glad you are with a watercolorists. Absorb and let it all in. I was Gallery sitting for a friend and owner today....did two 8X10's in the 4 hours I was there. Happy, with the finished product!:)
WTF?.....Am I missing something and you were a bad girl Sun?......don't think so.

I've been in this moon kick. It all started with looking at that huge moon in May. Since then I have painted 28 small oil paintings and still painting.
I feel nutty but I get high looking at the big old moon. LOL

Please don't let this thread go dead. I just joined a website called Art Tutor. They have lessons in multiple media. They have some free lessons and it's $15 a month to join. I'm really enjoying it. My last watercolor lesson was in 2008, so I've forgotten a lot.

Hi, all my fellow artists, creative women, lovely friends - well, I was "banned" by BCO. Basically in response to a PM from the moderators, which I answered, I was declared to be "disrespectful and unkind" - tried to post to explain I'd be gone for a month, but my posts were deleted.
SO. "Obviously", I won't be around as often as I used to be, but certainly hope the spirit of this thread continues.
-
Was wondering where you were. As you can see, we were all holding our breaths!! If it makes you feel any better, I was banned for six weeks and then it took them a month to get it working for me again!!!!
-
Hey, Barbe - thanks for commiserating....I was banned for, well, we'll share that another time
Meanwhile - I am having SUCH FUN playing with my Janome S500. Planning on taking Sewing Class at local Adult Education in the Fall. My first project will be a pair of "Flax" Flood Pants. I still have some years ( and years) old, as they wear out (inner thighs!) I "patch" them, more patches than pants - but still wearable ( given I live, literally in the woods) & new ones are now about $70. Crazy to pay that for what look like Linen pajamas. Will figure out how to take a pic when I finally make something. Thanks AGAIN for understanding how it feels to be taken out of "community."
ETA: I LOVE FOctober! just love it...goes for everything "pink" and selfpromoting using bc!
-
Meant to send DEEEEEEEEP thank yous to Artsee - I am LOVING the Making Color Sing by Jeanne Dobie book, watercolors. Bought the "pallette of WN colors she uses, and doing the exercises making "her" colors. Who knew there could be so many delicious greens, and "mouse colors"
-
Funny you say that Sunflowers! When I started buying the Pan Pastels, I bought the "darks" first!! LOVE the depths of grays and browns. I had to add in the lighter colours bit by bit.
-
Pil, I love it! Beautiful colors and feeling.
Phyllis -
Ahhhhh....moon wisdom...wonderful symbol too.
Barbe - I still use the pan pastels - now when I use the sticks, I really notice I get 'sniffly' from the powder, but the pan ones are so painterly. I'm still really trying to learn watercolor - I love the process, and a friend has 'hosted' a group of us in her studio over the summer. Find it SO valuable to be with people when painting, really seems to help, inspires,
-
What are these posts about?? Who is Pil and what is moon wisdom? Am I on the wrong page???
-
barbe '-) go back up a few posts....
-
Ah yes!!! A beautiful moon that got eclipsed when sunflowers came back!! Well done, Pil!
-
LOL Barbe, now you've got me curious what YOU could have goten banned for...DO NOT POST IT HERE....LOL
but good to see you looking great - and I am EAGER to buy the t shirt: FOCTOBER ( before October!)
-
I got banned for supporting someone in an alternative thread. Seriously.
-
barbe - the mind boggles...I now only post on this and one other thread, seriously.
So happy you are enjoying the Pan Pastels...I haven't found any books about them yet, have you?
-
No books, but I watch the online Youtube videos over and over. One of the guys plays music that he taped of himself playing the piano and singing and it's just beautiful!!!!! I sometimes just watch his music videos. Right now I'm working on a fibre art piece. Check out the sewing thread where there are some pics. I'm almost finished...having a bit of trouble knowing when to stop!!!
-
off to find the sewing thread ;-)
-
Aug 15th is the last post? Wow, haven't been on here in ages because I see and hear from so many of you on Facebook. It is so much easier maneuvering around on there than here. It took me a good 5 min. to get to this reply. Ugh. Still hate this format.
Sun, now you are into sewing? I can't communicate with you on this unfortunately. I throw everything out that needs to be sewed.:)
We just had our raffle at Sheboygan Visual Artists where we painted 300 8X10's and raffled them off for $20.00. Great turn out. Fun...because everyone could turn in the art they ended up with and put it on a trading wall if they didn't like it. I worked the trading wall.....l bad ones up and good ones down. Did 14 of them this year and none made it to the trading wall. The people hung on to them like bloody ticks.:):).
