MI Survivors

Hi to all you Michigan gals! I'm not there any longer, but was there for 25 years - from age 5 to age 30. I was on the west side of the state - Grand Rapids. A fine place to live - I especially miss Lake Michigan, one of my favorite places on Earth.
Strength and laughter to all of you-
rj -
Candi - What a bummer!
Ann and Pat - Have you signed up yet?
Nancy - Do you think putting Michigan or Detroit Race for the Cure in the subject line of your post in Moving Beyond would help catch the eye of anyone in or around Michigan?
I'm trying to be good and stay off my foot so I can have the cast off in time. Totally sucks. I want to play in our garden, dang it!
Irene -
Hi RamonaJane. Do you still have relatives out this way? You could visit them and come to the Komen race in June. Good excuse as any to come back to Michigan. Is your partner up to walking? Hope all is well. I have been in your shoes when I found out my husband had cancer also. I think it is much harder to watch your loved one hurt than to go through it yourself.
Does anyone have suggestions for kats? I cannot suggest anything around Detroit, Inkster or even Romulus. I'm totally paranoid about Detroit and do not think it is safe to stay there.
Irene - I'll change the subject line in the post and see if that catches anyone's eye.
If we all meet at the survivor's tent, what time is good?

Here's a few links.........
http://detroit.airporthotelguide.com/
http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/search/hotel_detail.html?propertyID=1415
http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/cp/1/en/hd/dttcp
http://www.hotels-rates.com/hotels/locations/Detroit/MI/usa/47/
These should help...... Downtown has several nice hotels that I would feel totally comfortable staying at...... Now Inkster would be out of the way and really not close to a freeway for her and I used to live by the airport and there are nice hotels there too.......
Hugs........
Candi -
Candi,
I was giving thought to trying to find a hotel near Comerica Park so we could just leave our car at the hotel and walk to the race......What are your thoughts on that?
Not knowing Detroit but knowing Chicago I know there are certain areas that are a definate 'stay away from'.
Thanks for the links.
kats -
You know, I'll bet theres a hotel close by that would even offer a shuttle to and from the hotel...... Let me look into that and I'll post what I find out........
Hugs.......
Candi -
Try this....... This looks very interesting and sounds like a great time...... Maybe you girls could do this after the race.......

My orthopedist thought walking 5 k, if I even could, would be unwise. Is there anyone walking only 1K? I am sort of upset that I can't walk the 5K.
Ann -
Irene:
Long story but what is happening is that my niece signed me up to walk with all of my relatives when the boards were down that weekend. Sooooooo, even though I won't 'count' for our team, I'm hoping to meet up with all of you at the Survivor's Tent - whenever. Will you guys post the time you expect to be there so I can be there too???
Thanks,
Pat -

Ok - did you select the link above?
Then select "Team registration"
Then, they make you put check boxes next to all these waivers. You know, if you stub a toe you won't sue them yadda yadda yadda.
On that same page you have to put your initials that you are over 18.
Then on that same page, hit check box that you are over 13!
Hit continue at the bottom.
Select a team (Breastcancer.org....)
put in password "bcdotorg"
Answer all questions that are marked with an asterisk.
Hit continue...
I think you should be in by then.
Let me know how it goes. If you are caught up on a page, it probably means you had to check off something else.
Good luck and welcome to the team!
Let's plan a time to meet. Thanks for the links Candi. I just had a thought. Candi, maybe you could meet us after the race? What ARE we doing after the race anyway? -
Once Michelle and Anna join us, we will have 16 members! Whoohoo!
Just so you know, you do not have to commit to any particular walk even though they ask you that on the enrollment. The streets will be throngs of people, shoulder-to-shoulder and I do not see how they could keep track of who goes where. I think they just want an estimate. So, play it by ear! If you feel like walking that day, do it. If not, sit in the shade and it will still be fun.
If you want me to have your bc.org t-shirts mailed to my house, please send me what size you would like and I'll make a list for Melissa. If not, be sure to send Melissa a private message to get your t-shirt.

Ann - I would imagine a lot of people (especially survivors) will be walking the 1k. So even if no one from the team is, I would imagine it would be a fun way to meet other survivors. Of course, if my cast isn't off by then, I could be walking (or hobbling) the 1k. I guess I should ask the doc when I see him in a couple of weeks.
If you're still having trouble with web site, you can also register by calling 800-Karmanos or emailing raceforthecure@karmanos.org You can also register for the survivor trolley, if you prefer. Just remember to tell them you're part of a team.
Pat - It'll be great to meet you!
Irene -
I just got this in the mail!!
Quote:
TEAM CAPTAIN UPDATE
THANK YOU CAPTAINS! We're really gaining momentum with registrations! Please take this last week of manual registration to reach as many people as possible. We encourage online registration but we do offer a paper option. All paper forms must be summarized on the Roster by the Captain and turned in by May 12, 5:00 p.m. Additional online entries through May 21 will be added to your team count.
Every person makes a difference!
MANUAL REGISTRATIONS are due in by May 12. You can -
MAIL TO:
Race for the Cure, Karmanos Cancer Institute
4100 John R, Detroit 48201
MUST BE POSTMARKED BY 5/12/06!
DELIVER TO:
Karmanos Cancer Institute, "Vee" Building
24601 Northwestern Highway, Southfield MI 48075
(near 10 Mile and Evergreen) 248 351-1861
Remember, place all of your team's manual entries, along with a Roster, in one package. You can use the Excel version of the Roster on the Race website if that's more convenient, or handwrite a Roster (which you can download from the Captain's Kit). On your Roster, list only the MANUAL entries you are attaching. We will combine these with any online entries and give you back a complete roster at Team Packet Pick Up.
ONLINE REGISTRATION - is open until midnight May 21. So, if you have people who miss the paper deadline, encourage them to go online and register with your team. They can still get in on the Team fun, and it's a bargain to register online! While individual fees have already gone up, team registration fees stay at the same level throughout the online team registration deadline.
TEAM MEET LOT - Take advantage of a great location for your team to gather, courtesy of Olympia Entertainment. Team MEET Lot will be staffed with volunteers to answer any last minute questions you might have and our volunteer photographer will be on hand to take team pictures. You can find a map in your Captain Kit or at: http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/det/photo/ComericaAeaMap.pdf
CO-SURVIVOR ESSAYS - Tourneau, America's largest watch store, has come on board as the new sponsor for the "Co-Survivor" Award. The winning team will receive one male and one female watch from Tourneau (for distribution at the Captain's discretion). A panel of judges will select the most inspirational Co-Survivor story. A "Co-Survivor" is the key supporter(s) of a breast cancer survivor or patient - living or deceased - who is the team's inspiration. Only one essay per team. Maximum 100 words. The essay must be:
Emailed to jaber@wideopenwest.com OR Mailed to Jan Tebelman, 13386 Picadilly, Sterling Heights, MI 48312 no later than June 4, 2006.
The top 3 stories will be posted on the website after the Race.
CAPTAINS TOOLS
We hope you are using these cool tools to communicate with your team members, encourage fundraising, and be sure everyone knows how you plan to distribute team packets.
MAY IN ACTION
While there's not quite 31 days left in May, we encourage you to take a stand for mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, husbands, friends and everyone whose lives are affected by breast cancer. In addition to what you are already doing as a Team Captain, we ask you to join us and take the 31 Days of Action pledge to raise breast cancer awareness this May.
Click here to do so: http://komenpolicy.org/campaign/mayaction?qp_source=200605%5fadv%5fweb
BECOME A WARRIOR IN PINK
Breast cancer wages war on women's bodies every day. "Warriors in Pink," powered by Ford, offers you creative and inspiring ways to fight back. Visit http://www.fordvehicles.com/thecause/ to learn more. Women in charge, living out loud, taking their power, standing strong together - these themes and the materials available at the Ford Cares website may be just what your team needs to go for that Visions Spa Salon "Spirit" Award - or to draw in so many survivors you win the Detroit Shock "Pretty in Pink Award. Who knows what can happen to "Warriors in Pink"?
I was a little worried because I read somewhere else that you wouldn't be part of the team if you registered after the 12th - Yesterday! It is not true.
The link they gave for the Team meet is bad. I think the survivor's tent is still the best.
VOLUNTEERS - If anyone wants to volunteer to package team packets on May 27th, please let me know. I may do that if I don't have to go alone. I will have the roster for Komen and the T-shirt list for Melissa today! If you want it directly to yourself, please send her a note. Otherwise, let me know what size if you haven't already.
We have a fundraising page that is not accessible to everyone. So typical of their web sites. Anyway, Kats is doing fundraising and has a bunch that shows up for the "team"! We have to thank all her friends and relatives! -
Candi,
Sending you Happy Birthday Wishes........

kats -
Are you going to join us? C'mon, we'd love to meet you and/or see you again!
Happy Birthday Candi!
Are we meeting after the race? We should make plans so Candi can join us.
I know there are move MI ladies out there! We need one more to be an "official" team! So, again in my best NPR voice, "you can be that one caller who makes a difference"!
Only 6 more days open to sign up with the team!
xxxooo
Nancy -
Happy Birthday Candi!
I can't believe we're still one short. It'll be a bummer if we don't make the minimum.
I'll have to check with my husband about the 27th and let you know. Do you know what time and where?
Irene -
Sphynx, I just spent 30 minutes trying to register. I am paying using Visa. It is a good card which I pay off each month. Nevertheless, it keeps declining me. I am about to give up. Also, what about those of us who are larger than XL tee shirts?
Ann -
oh sh!t.........i'll get on it right now!
had the blues lately and never even thought about it!
i'm computer stupid so if i get stuck i'll ask you guys for help registering ok? -
Come on ladies...looking so forward to seeing you! Conniesue is goign to sign up tonight to!
-
Ann - Were you able to get through? I don't know what could be wrong, but if you can't do it on-line, you can call 1-800-kamanos (527-6266) during the day.
Shel - Glad to see you're signing up. Looking forward to meeting you.
Off to watch 24...
Irene -
Ok - what happened? No one signed-up last night so I'm assuming everyone is having problems? Let me know what is going on. We can write one of the komen ladies, Jan Tabelman
raceladyjan@wideopenwest.com
I sent Jan a quick note that people are having trouble signing up. I'll let you know what she says.
Anna - There is no way you are larger than an XLarge T-shirt! I've seen you and I'd think you could fit in a L and that would be roomy. Are you asking for someone else?
About your credit card. I'd guess it is you have spaces or something in the number. Or, they want that "special" number on the back of the card that you might have forgotten to put? Date not in right format? It is probably something small but not obvious. If that keeps happening, I'll sign you up and you can pay me back.

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL:
Weve already heard from some of you about helping on May 27 with Team Packet Pack Up. Its a fun day and those that come take home their team packets a week early! And lunch is on us! Get in on the fun RSVP to me at raceladyjan@wideopenwest.com or call at 586-268-9783.
If anyone wants to join me early, I'll pick up the packets on the 27th. Otherwise, I'll wait until June 2nd. If anyone wants their packet early after I get them, just let me know and we'll figure something out.
I'm not crazy about the survivor breakfast. The reason is, many of us will be with friends and family and they will be left out. I will plan on being their as early as the earliest person so they can get their packets. So, the question is. Do we meet in the TEEM meet lot or survivor tent and what time?
Hope everyone who wants to join is able to. Again, let me know if you are having trouble and I'll work something out. -

...but if you can't do it on-line, you can call 1-800-kamanos (527-6266) during the day.
I'm gettin' there! I'm just a little bit behind. I am SO looking forward to meeting everybody. Where are we meeting the day of the race? What info do I need to give anybody so I can get my BCO shirt? -
Nancy,
I looked at the map but man is it small and hard to see. I even put on two pairs of glasses and still can't make out the words. Where is the survivor tent anyway, is it listed on the map? With the mass of people going to the race I don't want to get lost in the shuffle looking for you guys
I still haven't heard back from Melissa about the BC.org shirt I pm'd her for.
kats -
OK! I'm in! I think that makes us a team, officially. What else do I need to know. Are we meeting the evening before? Lunch the day of? I can't go down an do survivor packets this year--I have to work. But next year I can.
-
Ok - try this map. It should open with Adobe and you can zoom in.
http://www.karmanos.org/detroitraceforthecure/releases/site_map.pdf
The Survivor's tent is listed as "Survivor's Cafe" on this map near the center.
fancy - you can send me a private message with your t-shirt size and I will add you to a list for Melissa. I sent her one list but I can update it. If you want it mailed to you, send Melissa (the bc.org moderator) a private message with your size and address. Look forward to meeting you!
We will meet either in the Survivor's tent or Teem meet! We will decide soon, I'm sure. -
Nancy,
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You......
Wow, so much easier to read when you can zoom in.
kats -
Thanks for the B-Day wishes...... I really appreciate it.....
When I get more details on this test and times I'll let you know when I should be able to get down there..... I have to have my son find his 'ticket' for info on test day.....
Hugs.......
Candi -
We had someone sign up! I'm not sure if it is fancy2 but I won't post the name in case it is and she want to remain anonymous.
So, it is official with 15 members! We also now have 7 survivors. -
If it was within the last hour, it was me, and I don't care if you post my name. I just haven't--but there's no reason not to. Does 15 make us officially a team???
