I had a skin sparing mastectomy with immediate free flap reconstruction at UAB with Dr. Krontiras (BS) and Dr. Fix (PS). Dr. Fix is wonderful, very good and very kind, however after going under general anesthesia 3 times to try and achieve projection for the mastectomy side I decided to send pictures to NOLA for a 2nd opinion. I was told Dr. Krontiras had cut thru my inframammary fold and I would need to re-open the scars to correct. No one bothered to tell me this nor is it in my medical records. I was told 9 out of 10 Mastectomies at UAB have this happen. Too old school!!

I have scheduled surgery in NOLA to repair and try to achieve a better look. Please look into NOLA, I wish I had. Again, Dr. Fix is great, just not pleased with BS.

    Kmtmom1,

You can PM me if you have anymore questions. I will be glad to help you in any way. I had 2 young boys and did not feel I could travel 2 years ago and I thought UAB hung the moon. I just think their BS needs more training on skin sparing mastectomies. None of my scars are hidden and she took a lot of skin!! As I understand it the IMF should not be cut or violated during a skin sparing mastectomy if the tumor is not near it.

I would recommend Dr. April Maddox at Brookwood Hospital.  She came highly recommended to me and I was very pleased with her.

Dr Maddox is actually my BS. When I got my MRI results she had someone from her office call to tell me what the report said... So I was left with a lot of questions. I called 3x in a little over a 24hr period b4 she called back to explain. Just didn't settle well with me. But, after asking around I think I'm going to give her another chance. Thanks for the recommendations.

KM, I used Dr. Rader at St.Vincents for my BS, and Dr. Beckenstein is my PS, also at St. Vincent's. My MO is Dr. Harvey at Trinity. I feel I am in the best hands available in our area. They are all so compassionate, I had an issue with my first MO and Dr. Rader called me personally at home to recommend Dr. Harvey to me, and then on the same evening my PS called my DH to let him know that they were going to take good care of me, he knew the situation with first MO because he and Dr. Rader work very closely together, and Dr. Rader had called him to let him know what was going on because we were so upset. I knew then that they would go above and beyond to make sure I was well cared for. Those are my recommendations, I hope you find right Dr.'s for you :)

Oh and by the way, Dr. Beckenstein specializes in breast recon, he has won so many awards for his work and has been featured in several women's magazines, I encourage you to look his web page up and read about him, I believe he may be one of the best in the country , if you are from this area then you are familiar with Brenda Ladun (news anchor), he was her PS too.
