First mammogram on Friday after diagnosis/treatment
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of last year. It was 1.3 CM, stage 1, grade 1 and clear margins. ER + I had a lumpectomy and radiation and am now taking Tamoxifen.
I am told my liklihood of recurrence is low but I am a nervous wreck about my first mammogram on Friday, since diagnosis. Does anyone have any words of encouragement to help me through the week? I have been so worried over this and want to enjoy life without stressing.

Angel123 - I just finished my boosts last week - I will interested in the responses that you get. Of course my thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement are with you! I did read that the mammogram after treatment is uncomfortable. I know I plan on taking a Motrim 800 before mine. I don't have a date yet. I see my MO in August.
I can tell you that my cousin had a similar size tumor, lumpectomy and rads. She took Tamoxifen for five years and is fine now. Her BC was in 2000. She has been Cancer Free for 12 years!
My tumor was a similar size and I was also stage 1, I had a lumpectomy and radiation also. I am taking Arimidex. I was probably neg and you were probably positive, if I understand all of this. Any side effects from the Tamoxifen? I can't complain much about the Arimidex but it's a good thing I am taking it at night. After my pill, I fall to sleep, within 30 minutes. I wake up when my legs start cramping, it's getting better.
Are you still red from the Radiation? Any lasting symtoms? My breast is still hard and very red.
-
I know exactly how you feel. I was diagnosed in January. I had a lumpectomy and internal radiation and then had chemo until May. My first mammogram was 2 weeks ago and it was very nervewracking. The radiologist also requested an ultrasound which would have freaked me out more but she explained it was just a precaution and from now on I will always do both mammo and u/s. Fortunately everything turned out fine and I feel so much better knowing I really am NED. I don't think I will ever again have a worry free mammo again but I feel reassured knowing I will be watched extra carefully from now on.
Try to relax and think about how great it will feel when you get the "all clear". Good luck and let us know how it turns out. -
Thank you both for your reply. It really does help reading your experiences. Believe777, my rads were done in early Jan and I am still tan. I never got red but my breast still feels different. I was told it could take up to a year for side effects from radiation to stop so don't be nervous if you still feel anything. The only side effects of Tamoxifen are night sweats not fun but after reading of other possible side effects, I can't complain. GeorgiaMom, thank you for letting me know the ultrasound is standard procedure. I would have freaked out as well. I soooo appreciate both of your thoughts on this. I will let you know how things go. Thank you.

Angel- I'm not sure if the u/s is standard procedure for all doctors but this radiologist missed my cancer last summer and she didn't want to miss anything again. Plus I have very dense breasts making it harder to see. So you may only have the mammo but don't worry if they want u/s too. Chances are very good that everything will be good! I would love to not stress all the time but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Maybe years of clear mammos will help us!!!

I guess if we had to get Cancer (bite my tongue) - BC is the one to get. They seem have this one down. I feel like we are little soldiers going from one post to another. We are so much luckier than our Sisters who got this in the past. I sincerely believe this won't kill us.
Thanks for sharing your experience GeorgiaMom and all the best Angel123. Yes, please keep us posted. Angels are the Bright Lights in Our Midst.

Georgia, that is scary that they missed it the first time. My mammogram was a year ago in May and they didn't see anything either, but I had a worry in September and got it checked again, thank goodness. I hope we get a lifetime of clear mammograms now.
Believe777, I know what you mean about if we get any type of cancer, this is the one to get as odd as that sounds. When it is caught, it is amazing what they can do.it helps listening to positive support from the two of you.

here is my suggestion for the days before mamos (approved by my mamo center!)
massage, facial, manicure, pedicure and any othe spa thing you can thing of! Oh yeah, a tylonel or motrin is a good thought if you are worried on pain.
good luck, I almost (almost I am saying) do not fear the mamo when I know I get to have a spa day before!
-
I, too will have have my first mamo aug 8th, first one since dx aug 10th last year. It has been on my mind since I got the appt. thanks for the information, it really helps. I had a right thoracatomy after chemo and incision is under my right breast and it hasn't felt the same since. Trying to be positive, although I am triple negative...life does go on and so will I. I know all of us will have clear results...
-
I am less than a month post dx and already thinking ahead to a life of stressful waiting on test results. I do so love the suggestion of a spa day tho, wont change anything but at least something positive to anticipate!

I'm in the same place. Diagnosed last Aug, surgery (UMX) in Oct. My mammo/US is scheduled for Aug 10. I will say that after my UMX I had a terrible panic scare...I felt a hard lump on my reconstructed side. My wonderful BS could see the fear in my eyes and immediately phoned the breast center and got me a mamo/US that same day. I was fine. The happened this last Feb. It was fat necrosis from the reconstruction. I had skin sparring UMS with LatD/implants on the left side. The radiology dr did both sides with the US and told me that this will be my new normal. A mamo on the non-BC side and ultrasound on both. I'm still nervous about my next set of tests in Aug. I don't think that will ever go away. But we are very lucky to be online chatting about it. I'm extremely thankful.
-
Jwilco, I too,am glad to have online to commensurate with others in the same boat. I will be glad when the appt is over and know that all is fine. That is what I think and believe. I wasn't sure what they would do when I go in, thanks for the info.

I got an all-clear on my first Mammogram on Friday, since BC diagnosis. I am so thrilled but give me a few months and I will probably worry all over again. If it makes anyone feel better, I have been told that the first one is the most nerve-wracking and then it gets a bit easier from there. Hang in there and keep thinking that all the treatment you went through is killing that son of a b***! Lynn, I was nervous since my appt was made as well and it was so hard as the appointment got closer. Chances are, you will walk out of there feeling so happy. I was told I would have no worries but I didn't believe it until after the appt.
If anyone feels anything unusual, chances are it is scar tissue from radiation. I had a long talk with my radiologist about my concerns and felt better after talking with him. I recommend any of you worried, to do the same. I know you won't feel 100% better until after the appt but it will help. Best of luck to you all.

Angel:
I'm doing the happy dance for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on your all-clear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My first mammo post diagnosis will be September 12. I told my DH that I was going to TRY not to worry about it until September but it's in the back on my mind already. My DH will go with me since he tries to go to all my appointments. I'm praying we'll go out to celebrate afterwards.
Have a great night,
LaDonna

Angel123 - What great news!!!!!
My appt is Aug 10 and the worries have been sneaking up on me. I'm trying to play the sceen in my head that afterwards, when they say I'm all clear, I will feel so relieved. I'm trying to picture myself walking out of the Women's Center with a big ass smile.
Let's hope my visualization works.

Angel123
I hear you! My first appt with my MO after, surgery, rads etc. is Tues. Aug 7th. I got my blood test today. I hope visualization works too! -
My appt is tomorrow, I won't lie,I am worried and will be glad when I am done tomorrow night. I didn't have blood tests, should I ask for them? It is almost 1 year since dx, and I have had pain in my right breast. Hoping it is just from open heart surgery I had after chemo. Thinking I may just see about right mast and lessen the worry. Here is too positive thoughts....
-
Positive thoughts worked, all clear for first mammo after dx. I will wait another year before considering right mastectomy, bs thinks risks of surgery outweigh having it removed. Waiting 2 years will be better. Pain is from right thoracotomy. Such a relief, sending positive thoughts to everyone else as you approach your one year mark.
-
Lynn....Congrats!!!!
I'm doing a happy dance for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yes, only positive thoughts. My first appt after surgery and rads went fine. My blood tests were all in the normal range. I felt so much better after I left. My MO said the red chest could take a year to fade but I think it's looking pretty good. The fatigue I attributed from the radiation may be attributed to the Arimidex I will be taking for the next five years. Still doing my best to get my energy level up.

Going to my mamo/us appt this morning. My husband tells me that worrying about it won't change the outcome. He is right. So I am trying not to think about how the last one went.
-
jwilco...hoping you got a good report on your mammo/us today!
LaDonna
-
LaDonna - Yes I did! It was a lot of worry on my part. You know, you put on the robe, get the mamo part done and then wait to see if they want more pics. So you sit in the robe waiting room and wait. I did have to go back in for more mamo pics, and tried not to go there in my mind, but when I had the ultrasound the dr said it was a benign cyst. So the right breast has past it's test today!
-
Jwilco:
Great news!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I can soooooo identify with all of you ladies! Had the first mammo of my remaining right breast in June after all my surgeries and treatments were done, and I was so scared all over again. Was instantly catapulted right back to those dark December days of the diagnosis . . . Fortunately all was fine - yeah!
Jwilco, I really like your husband's take on it that worry won't change the outcome. My new mantra is: Don't worry until you have something to worry about. Easier said than done, but when I think that my chance of dying from a recurrence is way less than dying in a car crash, that puts things into perspective. On that note I'm going to pour myself a cup of coffee, walk through my early morning garden, and literally take time to smell the roses. And the coffee - LOL. Best wishes to you all!

Just joined after reading ur post I also had open chest surgery after chemo and rads makes recovery harder I hav to hav first mammogram since diagnosed hav been to scared and missed app b4 am single and my family hav not been much help feel more normal reading others

Wow! How time flies. I had my first post diagnosis, post treatment mammo on 9/27/12. I thought I was fine and I was....up until the time I stood in front of that machine! I had a mini meltdown right then and there....God bless those techs....they told me to take my time and take deep breaths....everything would be fine. I had the mammo then went to the exam room. The radiologist came in and said "All Clear" and did a breast exam! My hubby was on pins and needles in the waiting room and almost jumped out of his chair when he saw my big smile and my thumbs up!
I went back in March for a mammo on my left breast and again got an all clear. This time there was so much less stress than that first one....still a little on edge but no nearly as bad.
I'll go back in September for a mammo on both breasts and expect to keep hearing "All Clear".
I'm praying that you all get good results and try not to stress out....I know....a lot easier said than done!

All: Am having first mammo after completion of treatment...I am afraid. My wonderful hubby going with me. Do they sometimes do an ultrasound, too, as a precaution? Have been trying not to think too much about this, but it's hard. SOOO hoping for an all clear, and more healing time under my belt. Hugs to all on a Friday. I am so tired of being scared all the time!!
