June 2012 Radiation Rads

Thank you for the yoga link. It will be great if it helps with the pain in my arm. I have already tried some of the poses. My RO said today it was just one of those things that you just have to deal with and it might get better with time. UUUhhh. ok.
-
Hi Nancy, do you have a link to the Yoga poses that help? I am a couple of rad treatments behind you. Sore and burning and fullness on the affected side, hurts to sleep on that side, and fatigue is setting in...
Thanks,
Iniah

Does anyone else find themselves getting emotional as Rads gets closer to being done?
I am noticing it...
I wrote about this on my Blog yesterday. When you start finishing with treatment, you realize the
devastation BC has left behind that will always be with us.
-
Denise, I think a better question might be "Did anyone not get emotional as the approached the end of rads. I know I certainly did and I'm not generally an emotional or moody person. I've always kind of raised my eyebrows at people who get all "pms" so, yeah, it's been a revelation.

My favorite series is Sun Salutations. Here's a link to a beginner's salutation: http://www.yogajournal.com/video/267
This is the salutation I enjoy the most: http://www.yogajournal.com/video/269
You can find lots of yoga videos online at Yoga Journal: http://www.yogajournal.com/video/ They are incredibly helpful in beginning a practice.
I learned this week that my local YMCA offers a program for breast cancer survivors. It is free for a year, and includes work with a personal trainer who is trained in working with BC patients, as well as yoga and other fitness classes, and use of the gym and facilities. They work with you to create a plan for overall wellness and health. I found out by calling my Y - just another thought.
-
Is it part of the livestrong program Nancy?
-
Loveforlife - Thank you so much for sharing your experience and the yoga link - it's very helpful!
Jenn - Best wishes and healing hugs to you!
Denise - Emotional? Yes, I just so happened to cry this morning for the first time in a long time. I let me myself feel sorry for myself as I was looking in the mirror at my angry red chest, holding a cold washcloth to my poor underarm.
My skin's starting to break down. We discussed getting rid of the bolus yesterday but my RO wants to use it as long as possible - I only have 5 more treatments with it, before my boosts. The RO
My RO told me at the beginning that the 6 weeks of rads was like a marriage. The first 2 weeks would be the honeymoon ("oh, this is no problem, I feel great"); the middle 2 weeks you start to see some problems and little things begin to annoy you; and the last 2 weeks....well, I'm ready for a divorce.
Hope everyone has a good day! It's almost the weeekend....
-
Denise-you are so right about the emotional feelings. My first two weeks were so difficult. I never had anxiety until all this. So much to deal with-pain, emotionally and really learning who counts in your life. Lots of surprises both good and bad.
I have 3 more treatments and guess what comes to mind is "then what" ?? I will go on to enjoy each day in a way I never did before. I certainly have a new view on life. I have always been postive but this journey puts so much more in perspective. I am sooooo excited to be done and so nervous at the same time. My tears have turned to those of happiness and all I can do is move ahead. No looking back. Should we start a thread for those of us coming to the end of treatments?
Thank you all for your support-- Have a Great Day!

I'm doing my HAPPY DANCE! Done with rads - AGAIN!
I'm not as emotional this time around. The first time I finished rads, I was tearing up walking out of the building. I felt lost knowing that I was "on my own" to take care of myself (I'm triple negative - so no meds.)
If I didn't know for sure, I really know now that life comes with no promises or guarantees. What I have is this moment. And I am grateful and happy RIGHT NOW!
PEACE my friends!
-
Loveforlife - Congrats!!
Over the weekend I felt so weak. On Sunday my doc called with my lab results, my hemoglobin was 7.8, normal is at least 12.5. I needed a blood transfusion. Monday morning I had to cancel my rads, however turned out I didn't need to because I just sat at the hospital (different one) waiting for them to cross match my blood. I went home at the end of the day with still no match, they had to search nationally as I have unique antibodies due to my clotting disorder. Tuesday I got zapped then went to the other hospital for 2 units. I still didn't feel the best and was very nervous I wouldn't be able to have my endometrial ablation because my chest hurt so bad, but they were able to do it yesterday after my rads in the morning, I was a mess pre-op, crying and worried they wouldn't be able to proceed. They ordered more blood so they said I was in the safest place to be, so I relaxed a little. The medical team was excellent, all we're aware to not touch the left arm so all blood draws, IVs and blood pressure done on right side. I got 3 more units of blood and home by 4 pm!! I feel 100% better today! I have color back in my face. I did notice my breast is starting to get bright red. 5 more regular treatments and 8 boosts left. I can't wait for the end of July!! -
OMG Lagata! Why did you need a blood transfusion? You poor thing going through all of this! How was the endometrial ablation? Are you still waiting for test results back from that? I'm so very sorry you're going through all of this and they're right - the hospital is definitely the best place to be! Big, gentle, hugs to you!
-
Neeners - I really was hemorraghing blood during my periods since I was diagnosed with BC in April. I told all my doctors this, told them I was out of breath just climbing the stairs (Big sign of anemia) for months and no one thought to test my blood counts! My biopsy came back negative for uterine cancer, so the ablation should stop the massive periods! I'm just so happy I'm not going through ultra tampons and maxi pads every hour today!!!
How's your boob? :-) -
Girl I'm just so glad that your biopsy came back negative - sorry I missed that news! Holy crap re: bleeding. I'm glad you have it under control now, too! Shew!
My boob is pretty good! Yesterday I started the boosts, and I only have three more to go now. I have bumpy, itchy skin with a few scabs, but otherwise it's not bad so far. No redness at all under my boob or in the armpit. I'm very lucky!
-
Lagata - I had a uterine ablation in October 2011 - four weeks before being diagnosed - because my periods over the previous few months had gotten so heavy and unbearable. The doctor said, "Oh, you're probably premenopausal and they get worse then." He did a uterine biopsy just to be certain, everything looked good so I was happy to have the ablation (haven't had a period since then). Funny - your story and mine makes me wonder if our periods changed so drastically *because* of our BC?
-
Cindyl: Our Y program is sponsored by Komen. I've heard that LiveStrong also sponsors programs at certain Y's.
-
Thanks. I need to check with our Y and see if they are doing anything similar.
-
Cindyl - Just finished the Livestrong program at my local Y. It was great, but the problem is it is not in that many Y's yet. If you have one near you, it is well worth doing.
I had gotten my range of motion back and now with rads am losing it. Thank you to those who posted yoga links. I think I will try those, I am very unhappy with the pull I feel on my right side these days.
Denise - low, sad , etc. I finish next friday and tho I still have 10 more herceptin treatments, I am getting very emotional. I could go to bed this evening and just stay there, I do go to work and that is a good thing, being around people helps my mood for a bit and allows me to get thru the day without thinking too much, You are not alone! Many of us right beside you.
Gentle evening to all

Nancy - I did wonder the same thing, asked my MO, no opinion there. Mine also could be due to a new bloodthinner I just began a month before so am trying to get that changed now. I even asked my hematologist about it at the beginning, but he discounted it. My gyno said I may still have lighter periods due to my needing to be on blood thinner. I'm glad yours was a smashing success!!
Neeners - happy that you're hanging in there! Almost done! -
Hello Ladies!
Denise- today was my first day without rads, didn't miss my appt at all!
Working does help, I didn't think of BC all day long, it was wonderful.
Let's just concentrate on the future, after all, that is where we will all be spending our time!
Lots of Happy Dances taking place now, it's wonderful, we've survived it.
I don't have to worry about my black nipple anymore, it's peeling. I refuse to let it bother me. -
Awoke with chest pain, suffered through until my rads were done at 11. Proceeded to the ER and underwent all cardiac tests. Have a slightly damaged heart from my prolonged anemic state. Am admitted, awaiting to see if there is further damage. I should be out tomorrow. I'm so discombobulated, I believe I have 11 more treatments.

Thank you everyone! Looks like I won't go home until at least Monday. I had an acute cardiac event. The good news is that there are no PEs, echocardiogram, and CT scan came back looking good. My cardiac marker enzymes came back elevated in each of their 3 draws, and my EKGs had changed so they are going to do another test to see if I have a clot in an artery. As I have a blood disorder that can trigger cardiac problems, that's how they're treating me. A round of steroids via IV for 3 days, then they opted for a CT reconstruction scan vs a catherization.
I hope I can go downstairs on Monday morning for my radiation! All the hospital staff is acutely aware of my BC and are very sympathetic. Surprisingly my right arm is holding up well with the IV line, blood draws, and blood pressure readings.
Thank you again my BC sisters! Keep fighting the good fight. I admit I cry a couple times a day. I want to get back to working out, and just cleaning my house. DH has been magnificent though.
Have a great Sunday! -
Wow, Lagata, I'm so sorry! Another Rads gal sending warm thoughts your way...
-
Diana, I am so sorry that you are having to go through all this heart stuff as well as the BC stuff :-(
Regards Jenn
