SCOTUS Upholds Affordable Care Act!

Of course you should, yorkiemom. It's the smart thing to do, if you can afford it. As I said earlier, all of the retired people I know buy insurance on top of the Medicare they receive.
-
That's circular reasoning, life.
Besides, a bigger problem than the nature of the market (free, controlled) is the accessibility of the market in the first place. The "free" market is never "free" because people are priced out of it due to price tag and geographic location, to name just two of the ways in which healthcare disparities occur. Healthcare should be a right, like schools - only by changing its status to "right" can it be truly accessible to everyone.
-
I stand corrected Life and Athena - in my mind insurance is free market, not because I can buy any Insurance plan that is sold anywhere in the United States, but because I can purchase (if only if it wasn't for that pesky little thing called pre-existing conditions) any plan that is sold in my State. Though my state does have certain minimum requirements, they certainly do not regulate demand or price. So, I have viewed insurance as being free market within the boundaries of my state, just as many other items are "free market" within the boundaries of the United States, but not between countries.
I will not, however, argue that my viewpoint is correct
.
-
Actually, screening out people for pre-existing conditions is part of the whole free market thing, isn't it? I mean, if you want to maximize profits - the essence of a free market, and how better than to eliminate people who will cost you money.
-
Sorry, Athena, I don't know what you mean: Specifically what was circular reasoning?
No system will ever be perfect, by the way, and the free market is no exception.

I also got 10 out of 10 correct. My DH was shocked! But I told him it was because of the " discussion" here on the forum. He was satisfied then. (definitely wouldn't want to injure his ego, he got 8 out of 10).
-
Life: the bit about free markets. But never mind.

Temporary firefighters and sympathizer's had collected 100,000 signatures petitioning my federal agency to get firefighters and their families the option to get federal group health insurance. In the meantime, while Obama was visiting the front lines in CO, some temporary firefighters bent Obama's ear. This is simply amazing...for decades, this situation has occurred, where our temporary employees risk their lives for the public without any health coverage. While injuries on the job would be covered by disability, these guys and gals breath unhealthy amounts of smoke over their tenure.
Obama directs that wildland firefighters be offered health insurance
Source: The Denver Post
President Barack Obama has directed federal officials to offer seasonal firefighters the option of purchasing federal health insurance coverage, White House officials told The Denver Post Tuesday.
On a a recent trip to Colorado Springs, the president was apparently moved by the men and women firefighters he met, senior administration officials said in an interview Tuesday. When he returned to Washington, he told his cabinet that he wanted to "find a solution" for the hundreds of workers toiling in dangerous conditions without the option to buy in to federal insurance -
That is so cool. One of my sons friends is a wildfire worker. Very dangerous work. He's been working weeks now with little relief.
As for,the quiz, 10 out of 10. -
WooHoo, 10 out of 10 correct!
-
What a wonderful thing for Obama to do.
-
Wonderful man!
(Rush's listeners must secretly visit the Kaiser web site - who else can get the answers so wrong. :-) )
-
Wonderful has nothing to do with it. This was a calculated decision, which he could have made at any time before today. Why did he wait until there would be positive press coverage of it?
The guy is up for re-election. There are 8,000 of these firefighters laying their lives on the line every day, and they had a petition with over 100,000 signatures asking for this insurance. He made the trip to Colorado at least in part to look for votes, and it would have cost Obama votes if he had said no to the request.
What I don't understand is why the The National Federation of Federal Employees believes it will cost over $17 million to pay the federal government's share of the premiums for 8,000 firefighters.
Until the time when someone comes up with a definitive "cure", we each have to cobble together what we believe will be the most effective treatment that we can live with, not merely survive.
-
I really have no clear idea what politically viable options exist right now for dealing with the spiralling healthcare costs and the great numbers of people who are unable to get basic and preventative treatment without sacrificing the rest of their budget (like food and housing).
I think we can all agree that all children should get access to vaccines and regular physicals. I think we can all agree that all adults should be able to get the care they need to stay alive if it exists. I hope that we can agree that families should not be burdened with crippling debt in order to get life saving care.
There is no question that many employers are not insuring many (for example, WalMart, an inarguably large employer, has limited the number of individuals it insures to roughly half). Many small employers are understandably not insuring. (I have a great deal more understanding for the small employers here). Then there is the great numbers of unemployed.
These problems are real. I don't think the ACA is ideal. I would much rather see single payer basic care for all and then the wealthy can buy extra insurance if they want it...a bit like liability car insurance versus comprehensive insurance. But I don't think anyone has come up with anything better than ACA that has a chance of making it through congress. So I think we need to give this a real shot and try to make it work.
I don't understand the venom in this discussion. It seems to me that people are angry. As if the bill's real intent is to steal the american dream away. Is it not possible that the ACA is precisely what it is portrayed as...a compromise imperfect attempt to move in a humane direction?
-
PatMom Wow, you are just so unsympathetic. A calculated decision? But atleast our current President can calculate well. I remember the last time Bush came to my area because of fire and he cut his trip short--missing out on half of the planned itinerary, so he could get to Southern California for a political fundraiser. He never stepped out of Marine One.
Furthermore, I cannot tell you how unhealthy, how dangerous, how dirty, how physically demanding and how thankless (paywise) federal wildland fire fighting is. For one, I've actually done it myself in my youth. I've been sprayed with retardant, crawled through poison oak, in over my head in logging slash at 2 in the morning, come home with interminable bronchitis, head lice, a staph infection that almost went to my brain, worked 24 hours shifts, spent weeks on end sleeping on the ground with generators and lights blaring. The pay is ridiculously low. On the latter end of my career, I've serve on Accident Investigation Teams...the last one, an 18 year old youth, his first summer out of high school, who lost his life on the fire line. They are risking their lives, for you.
And you want to talk about a pittance of money to give these guys health insurance? Their wages...maybe $12 to $15 an hour.
I don't get your math. $17 million divided by 8000 is not $2 million.
-
According to my calculations it is about 2500 per employee. A small price to pay.
-
Yeah, PatMom, how could you even suggest that a politician made a calculated decision at campaign time? My goodness! How could anyone even think such a thing? Don't you know that only Republicans make calculated decisions?
Question for all: Does anyone know what will happen if someone does not buy insurance and does not pay the penalty? Answer: Nothing will happen (according to what I've been reading).
So, will Uncle Sam eventually have to create a penalty for not paying the penalty? Nooooo! What am I saying... That would never happen! How could I even think such a thing?
-
My math was off. I knew it didn't look right, that's why I asked. I guess the zeros threw things off.
I am not at all unsympathetic to the firefighters.
My point is that it should not have taken an in person plea complete with press coverage to get these firefighters the coverage. If Obama is making health care and health insurance his signature accomplishment, he should have extended this coverage to these employees years ago.
-
Believe it or not, a President doesn't know what's going on in every aspect of government. This was a growing organic plea that only came on my radar at work several weeks ago in the form of a petition to sign. Nothing was planned in the field for Obama to intersect with temporary firefighters, for this reason, in Colorado Springs. One of the union firefighters (probably assignned to camp and probably a permanent employee) brought it up during a meet and greet at fire camp. I saw his interview about bringing it up to Obama. Opportunity met problem, nothing calculated.
Lot's of Presidents should have done it years ago. It was a very extraordinary decision, given traditions in federal government, but a much needed one.
-
Good grief, you would think the Pres had the fires set in Colorado just so he could make a timely visit and the firefighters timed their petition because they knew the Pres was coming??.? Its all one big evil conspiracy. Heaven forbid that our President is not aware 24/7 of every issue, every need, every whatever.
So what if the Pres gets some good press out of doing a good thing. He gets enough vicious press regardless of what he does or doesn't do. -
Kind of like posting his birth announcment in the Honolulu newspaper 50 years ago. LOL
-
-
OMG, really? C'mon ladies! This is an election year...of course it was calculated. All politicians are calculating.
-
Thanks, SherryG!
-
SherryG - a much needed breath of fresh air!
-
No problem. The penalty will not be phased in until 2016. By that time, Americans will have had the full benefits of ACA and there will be no turning back. When significant numbers start to dodge the law it will come up on the radar (as expected) and there will be laws to change the IRS code in order to collect, spured on by decreasing tax revenue via withholding and outrage at what the freeloaders are doing. This will be achieved by attaching a rider at midnite on to a bill passed before a major holiday. This will not cause ACA to collapse.
Dont you know, it's all been calculated out!
-
The amount of dodging will be epic.
-
Kam170, did you really mean to say that Obama's handlers specifically planned to keep him away from the temporary firefighters so he wouldn't have to deal with this when you wrote this? I ask only because that is what your phrasing says.
"This was a growing organic plea that only came on my radar at work several weeks ago in the form of a petition to sign. Nothing was planned in the field for Obama to intersect with temporary firefighters, for this reason, in Colorado Springs."
Talk about being unsympathetic to the wildland firefighters.
-
Curious...does it matter at all to anyone that healthcare costs in Massachusetts have been on the rise since the implementation of Commonwealth Care in 2006? Does it matter that lots of Massachusetts residents find it cheaper to pay the penalty than to buy from Commonwealth Care?
If it doesn't matter to you then I can understand why you would be all for ACA. If it does matter to you, then I'm confused.
