went for my 3 month blood draw the other day and the gal asked me what happened to my arm--I have LE in the left and must wear compression on my arm and hand 24/7.  I told her it was lymphedema and she said "Oh I know just what you mean. I had carpal tunnel and had to have surgery on it but it is good now"  I told her there was no cure for what I had and changed the subject.

I was at the farmers market and a friend and former colleague came up to me and said "I've joined the club". I didn't know, I was so unhappy for her.

She went on to say that another former colleague, when told that my friend would be off for the summer to recover from her mx said, "have a good holiday". Obviously she doesn't get it at all. Maybe that's why I haven't heard from her in 3 years. Her loss, not mine.

My neighbour - 'i didnt tell you at the time, my friends wife died of cancer. Then his daughter died a year later. Still at least with what you have you know you'll be ok'.

Why tell me now? Its a really tragic tale, and my heart goes out to them, but I dont know them and I cant really cope with that right now. I got him back a little. He and his wife used to be really good friends of ours, but nada since dx. So I said, 'you'd be surprised how many people turn their backs on you when something like this happens'. *pointed stare*. Childish i know, but it made me laugh a bit...

Completely understandable, though! Hope he has trouble meeting your eyes next time you meet. Unless, of course, he's such an idiot, he didn't realize you meant him... In which case, bless his little pointed head.

Kayth---My MOM was born in Donneyville outside of Lindsay----spent MANY summers in Peterborough, Lindsay area. Totally loved it, except for the one family that still had an outhouse---not much time spent there. We came from the big city Detroit. Outhouses were not acceptable even as small child. Some family still left in Peterborough.  Hope it wasn't a realative of mine that was such an ass

Orange---get counseling ---only for the reason to help you deal with your mothers anger. SHE really needs counseling. This is just a guess, excuse me if I being presumptive, your mom didn't have very good parenting skills and you survived in spite of it.

Sas--I've never intentionally blocked anyone here, either, but I did find that one person who seemed to "disappear" once was blocked.  I figured I must have done it accidentally, or it happened when the dog was "helping" me type a post.  I'm not sure how to block someone, either!  Chalk it up to "just one of those things" I guess!

Sas. The unwise woman who said I hope you have a good holiday was originally from Michigan, but living here in Peterborough. So it is VERY unlikely that you are related to her. But neat to know about your connection to Lindsay-Downeyville-Peterborough. Small world we live in.

sas-shatzi, go to your main page, where you'd edit your avatar, etc and see if I am blocked somehow. Sometimes there are glitches in the system and people get told they are suspended, or can't post PM's or whatever.

Kayfh--small world, I knew I spelled Downeyville wrong.... Lindsay, that at one time thought to be dying---is now such a thriving community , being discovered by retirees. I learned to swim at the community pool in the 50's . I so loved the whole area versus Detroit. Running through the fields. My first horseback ride was on one of the HUGE field work horses. Uncle calling the cows to be milked "Co-BOSS" .It was the best of all worlds, Detroit was fun in the 50's , then became very intense--went through multiple riots. Then the calm of L/P. A child of the city that got to play in the hay barn, run through cowcakes(ugh). the freedom of the farm that wasn't allowed in the city. I have always felt we were blessed by both worlds b/c it created an understanding that could only be obtained by being in both worlds. Memories. Hmmmmmmmm. delicious

When I was going in to have my mammogram last month, the receptinoist looked at me and asked, point blank 'how long have you been a survivor?"...I told her two years...then she asked if I had had a lumpectomy or a mastectomy...my initial thought was 'HUH? What has this got to do with registration??" but for some reason I answered directly (maybe because I am two years out and not one year out!) and said 'lumpectomy..with 16 bouts of radiation'...she then proceeded to tell me that a gal in their office had just finished her radiation that very day and went on to say hhow they were all trying to suppor ther and how strong she was being etc....and I ended up telling her to pass along my email or phone number to her friend(since she had them in front of her) if she needed a direct contact to the breast cancer road!...it started off as a 'dumbest thing' and ended up as a very good moment to lend support, give information and connect...interesting

sANDEE ----as nice as it was, it was a HIPPA breach--------her questions to you were a breach, then talking about her co-worker was a breach. don't mean to be a downer, but it seems no matter how much HIPPA education is given people don't get it. It would have been a total different story if you put your name on a list of people to be called for support.

I once had a person here demand to know my status, it caught me off guard. I took my bio stuff off when on a thread our stuff started appearing on FB. What I should have said to the person was --"your question breaches Hippa rules"," Ask one more question and you will be reported."----HIPPA breaChes are VERY costly. NO ONE HAS A RIGHT TO ANY INFO ABOUT YOU---CAN BE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR A HIPPA BREACH.

Sas, I'm not sure if this was a HIPAA breach - if the receptionist didn't name the colleague who just finished treatments, it wasn't a breach. Also, asking Sandee questions might not be a breach, but looking up the info in her file probably would be.

Not sure, but that's how I see it.7

I spend a lot of time going through old newspapers, and I'm always amused by the "John Smith was admitter to the hospital with a flare up of his ulcer." "The youngest Jones boy broke his arm in a riding accident." So different from these HIPPA & FERPA times.

sas, it's your own personal main page, I think it's the one now called "dashboard" or something. That's where you'll see if you have someone on ignore.

Sas- yep...for sure a breach...and my initial reaction was 'huh???' but then I realizezd she was also reaching out and if you can't reach out to a survivor, who can you reach out to when you have questions....I felt she was reassured to see me sitting there  knowing I had been sent to their centre instead of the regular mammogram sites...and the bottom line? I answered her questions...my choice to do so. It didn't say how long ago I had had cancer etc... I am goin gwith ' she was looking for reassurance that her friend would be ok'...if she got that reassurance from my answers, great...

But I also know that in a different head space...or at a different time (ie. last year at the same time), I would not have answered in the same way...because I was not in the same head space...it was dumb...inappropriate for sure...but not something I would report given what I believe to be the intention of the person who asked.

I DID however get a comment yesterday from my dentist that floored me yesterday....I went in for a crown and we ended up talking about weekend plans and then paddling came up...he knows I had breast cancer and am paddling for the cancer team...and he said, not thinking I am sure "oh yeah...I used to have a patient who paddled with the cancer team. She died."...the correlation between breast cancer, the dragon boat team and dying struck me...he said her name and I said "yes...our boat is named after her"...thought it was a weird conversation given how stressed out I clearly was already after the dental procedure...but I know he wasn't thinking about the connection I was making...he was just stating facts...still...odd thing to say to the survivor standing in front of you, hmm? So in two years, I have had four senseless conversations that have left me feeling 'that was in appropriate and insensitive'...two in one month, one with my original breast cancer surgeon and then one last Christmas...not bad in 24 months.

I had to go to a cardiac specialist on Long QT Syndrome, which I've just been diagnosed with. Besides saying "Sudden death is the best way to go!" He also said that I should be more worried about my breast cancer than my heart!!! Doi! to both comments!! A actually asked for a second opinion as my husband and I were still choking on the comments. Can't get one and have to see him next week for follow up! He told me he thought I had LOW blood pressure, even though I've been monitored for 19 years and on BP meds for 18 of those years. Idiot.
