Infected Implant - Has this happened to anyone else?
Hi! I had a BMX last year 6/27/2011 with tissue expanders. Went through chemo and rads and had my exchange surgery for silicone implants almost 6 months following rads (6/5/2012). The surgery was smooth, I liked the result, everything was great. Then, at four weeks after my exchange surgery, the radiated side got infected. Got a fever and the right foob was painful, pink, and swollen. Saw the PS on Fri (7/5), he said it was definitely infected and he performed surgery that day to check out the situation. Before the surgery, he said that if the infection was really bad, he would take the implant out, sew me back up, and 6 weeks later I would get another expander. Then after having the expander for awhile, I would try another implant. He went in, the infection hadn't gotten super bad yet so he cleaned out the pocket and put in a new implant. I have a 50/50 chance of not getting another infection. Has an infection happened to anyone else and it turned out ok? I
am just floored that this has happened. I had those damn expanders for almost a year with no issues. I know that the radiation really messes with things but I can't believe this has happened 4 weeks post op.

I didn't have a infected implants but was allergic to my implants. They did a few surgeries where they cleaned it out just incase it was infected. After a few surgeries to release all the scar tissue accumulating they realized that I was allergic to them. Which led to more surgeries for me.
I pray that no more infections happen and that you will feel 100% soon.

Thank you Jules1018 - sorry that you were allergic to the implants

Kassi! Hi. I know you must be devastated. Yes it unfortunately happens to alot of us. Mine became infected 3 months after exchange while I was traveling out of state. Ended up in an ER and infection was quite serious, I was admitted immediately and it was removed . Took me a year emotionally to get over that. I am now one month past an SGAP recon and so far so good but it too is a process. Radiated tissue can be so unstable I just did not want to take the risk. I am glad they caught your infection early, but please know that you are not alone.
To make matters worse my insurance did not pay for the removal because it was within 90 days of the original surgery.ughh -
Kasi,
I had an infection after expander placement. I was put on IV antibiotics for 10 days and it was salvaged and I did not lose them. So we don't always lose them after infection. It was okay for me and I hope you recover also.
-
Cascader - Thank you for your reply! I'm so sorry you had to go through all that! Wow, I was shocked at 1 month, I can't imagine being 3 months out and then BAM! I'm really hoping that this new implant works for me. I just don't think I could bear a GAP or FLAP procedure.
MondaysChild - Thank you for your response! I'm glad that your expanders worked out just fine after infection! I'm just worried because, as Cascader said, radiated skin is just really unstable
-
Kasi, good luck to you, I wish you well, keep positive!
-
Thank you cascader!

-
Kasi,
Wishing you all the best! I did preventative surgery.....my body didn't like any foreign material in me. So I ended up doing 2 LDF procedures at different times. I never got to implants. While no one responds the same it seems that if the surgeon felt you were okay to put a new implant in then I believe it's a good sign. Stay on track, keep positive people around you and know you have great medical care with lots of support. The rest will take care of itself. As I'm sure you have learned you can do this!!!! -
Thank you whatsnext! I'm just feeling kind of down because the exchange was my last step and I thought I was done. Now I'm worried that I'll get another infection. Hoping there is someone out there in a similar situation that turned out ok

Anyone?

I did not have implants but a friend had to have then removed due to red breast syndrome. The worry about that + the fact that I scar really easily, placing me at risk for capsular contracture, led me to the choice of fat graft reconstruction. I am so happy about the choice I made.
-
Kasi, this happened to my friend. She didn't have radiation, but got an infection anyway. It lasted 9 months until she finally had it removed. Six months later she had a DIEP and is thrilled with the results.
I had radiation, too - no infection, but I am not happy, so have scheduled a PAP for Sept. I'd like my breasts to look and feel more normal.
-
Thank you lizdehart - glad your're happy! And thank you sweetbean - good luck with surgery in September, I hope you get exactly what you want! :-)
-
Kasi,
I'm so sorry about your infection. I have a friend that also got an infection a week or so after her exchange surgery. She ended up having both implants removed as the PS thought the infection was going to travel to the other breast as well. She had a rare microbacteria infection. They aren't sure if she will ever be able to have implants again.
I haven't had an infection but my plastic surgeon told me that reconstructed breasts with implants are always at risk for infection and that an infection can occur at any time--even years later. He said this is even more common when you have had radiation. I am shocked by this and a little scared as I am considering having my implants replaced with a slightly larger set along with some fat grafting to fill in an indent or crease in my upper breast area. After thinking about this for about a month I'm not sure I should have this surgery. Maybe I should just leave well enough along you know?
-
Thank you for your response Jaysmommy! If I were you, I would just leave well enough alone

hello sweetie, I too had trouble with my implant, I had the expander put in and a couple weeks later during the holidays I awoke with from a nap hollering to my husband that I had severe pain in my chest were the implant was, and called my doc sent me to the E R and it caused a fever also and it hardened, so painful I was admitted and it was removed, doc said my rejected it as a foreign body, I started with a prothesis and have it since, pleased with it, after that experience I didn,t want to go thru that again, and Thank GOD I am now a 18 yr Survivor, God Bless Us All. msphil(idc,stage2, 0/3 nodes chemo and rads and 5 yrs on Tamoxifen,(L mast).
-
Congrats on 18 years msphil, that is AWESOME!

I had two lumpectomy's. Then I had breast lifts and implants. One month later my radiated breast implant got infected. It was a very serious infection, and I had to get the implant removed. That was 6 months ago. In September I am going to have latissimus flap surgery and an implant.

I got a nasty infection when I had my BMX and tissue expanders put in. The infection was in the pocket of my right TE. The right side felt funny or different 3 days after surgery but didn't show signs on the skin until my second fill which was very painful. Initially the ps thought it was cellulitis - a general term for red inflammed skin. I had the TE removed and wound irrigated 2 months later. The infection was a gram negative bacteria that came from someones hindend. Yuck!!!! obviously, I switched hospitals and PS, I now have my implants in and am waiting revision surgery this fall or winter.
Ask your PS to culture the pocket and do a sensitivity to make certain you are on the right antibiotic should you have any futher trouble
-
katehudson25...Yuck, that stinks, I'm really sorry to hear that :-( Good luck with your surgery in September!
drdolittle...Gross on the hindend bacteria!! Yucko! They did culture mine, just regular old Staphylococcus aureus. Yippee. I'm on Augmentin for at least 6 weeks.
-
Kasi, I hope you are doing well. After much consideration, reading these threads and discussion with my PS and Oncologist I have decided not to have the revision surgery. I am just going to live with the crease that appears in my pec muscle area when I move my arm back and forth. All in all I feel that my reconstruction looks great and I just can't risk losing the implants. MY PS keeps reminding me that I could get an infection in my implants three years from now or never. The radiated skin and implant are always susceptible to infection. An infection in one part of the body can travel to the implant. So now I'm paranoid and I'm constantly checking for redness.
-
Um, thanks Jaysmommy, I feel a lot better now, LOL!
But seriously, you'll know when you have an infection. It's not just redness. You will wake up out of the blue feeling like a truck ran over you. Aches. Fever. General feeling of crap. Foob will be swollen, tender, warm to the touch.
-
I'm so sorry you had to deal with that! I'm in the exact same boat you were in. How didn't your surgery go?

Had UMX 2 weeks ago on left side. Things were going great! ThenI woke up with a 102 degree fever on Monday. Went to the ER and ended up having surgery to remove my TS that evening. I had a good cry, but I do feel much better now. Now I wait 4-6 months before my PS will try the expander again. Live in Fresno where it's super hot so trying to figure out what to wear.

-
Ugh, sorry to hear Javalon. My left radiated side isn't infected but it sprung a tiny leak over 3 weeks ago. This past Mon ps stitched it as a last chance before having to take it out and I'd have to start over in 6 mo after it's out with TE again. He's going to make the call in 3 weeks or so. I've thought about if this comes out next month. My right implant is fine. I plan on getting a prosthetic bra so I'd at least be even under clothes. Insurance covers it as part of the bc dx.
