Severe Pain under tissue expander, 2 weeks since surgery
Hi, I am Lisa and I had my mastectomy on my left side on June 26th and had a tissue expander placement at the same time. Just yesterday, I got out of the house and rode around with my mom, sitting mostly in the stores she went into, holding my pillow under my arm to make sure I didn't move it too much. Well at one point I have the most gut wrenching pain I have ever had. It is located directly under my breast and is preventing me from getting up and moving around today because as soon as I start walking around the house, that pain hits again. Just so you know some of my background, I am disabled due to chronic pain in my back and knees that prevents me from working, so I am no stranger to pain, I have had two back surgeries and six screws put in my back and a double fusion. I have had two knee surgies, one on each knee, and other procesdures over the years including physical therapy, shots in the back, etc. So I am no stranger to pain, and this pain if I had to rate it, seriously not exagerating, would be a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10! I am on regular pain pills, muscle relaxers, nerve pills because of fibromyalgia, anti depression meds, etc. And none of those is touching this pain at all! I am not sure if it is normal or not. I do not have any other pain at the moment from the tissue expander or the mastectomy surgery, just this one horrible pain under my breast. If anyone else has had this, please let me know if you talked to your doctor or found out something beyond, "Oh that is normal after a mastectomy" Because this is certainly not a normal pain, based on all the pains I have had over the years, I can handle and take pain, lots of it, but this one pain is kicking my butt!

red - you may not get too many answers because this is a weekend and things tend to be slower. I am assuming that this is sudden and sharp pain, which could be due to a number of things, but it sounds like maybe your expander is pressing on, or pinching, a nerve. Many times this happens during the healing process when swelling either goes down or fluid and/or swelling shifts to a new area. I would advise your surgeon asap and see if you can get some new or different pain meds - or at least be evaluated to try to determine what this pain is from. There is also the possibility of a forming seroma or an infection so it is a good idea to see either PS or BS, at least call tomorrow. Best of luck!

Hi, RED8840 - So sorry to hear you are in such pain, but I wanted to welcome you to the forum.
I had a bilateral MX in December w/ immediate placement of TEs. My pain was never in control in the hospital, because I didn't want to take morphine.
So when I got home, the pain from the TEs was unbearable. I cried every single day for three weeks. It wasn't sudden onset, it was always there, like some horrific red-hot iron bear trap clamping down on my chest.
I finally listened to the wise women here and started taking the pain meds I'd been sent hom with. I took them regularly, around the clock. My DH even set his alarm for my 4 am Norco dose. That, plus Valium around the clock helped.
It also helped to have him massage the muscles in my back, and to take a hot shower (when I was able) before bedtime.
However, what helped me the most was getting fills. I got 180 ccs in the OR, and got to 620ccs in only five visits. Once I started getting fills, the TEs moved around underneath the pectoral muscles, which moved them away from the nerves they had been irritating.
SpecialK is right...in the case of pain, you should always contact your doctor first.
However, I am wondering if years of chronic pain, and taking "regular pain pills, muscle relaxers, nerve pills because of fibromyalgia, anti depression meds, etc." for so long means that they have stopped working for you.
I ask this because I went through a Pain Management Program years ago for many of the issues you described. After a while, nothing works any more.
You also say that you "do not have any other pain at the moment from the tissue expander or the mastectomy surgery, just this one horrible pain under my breast." Is the pain in the same breast where you had the surgery?
If so, how can you be sure it's not from the MX or the TE? There is so much trauma to the entire breast area when it is removed, and during the insertion of the TEs, the pectoral muscle is separated and sutured to make room for the hard-backed expander. It's a pretty agressive surgery.
Two weeks after my surgery, I was in no condition to ride around in a car, much less go into stores! I vegged out most of the time, only venturing out for my Post-Op appointments.
So please do give your doc a call tomorrow....perhaps it's just part of the healing process.
Hope you feel better soon!!!

Hi Red. I don't have any answers but I had my BMX and TE placement on June 26th as well. I also noticed you live in Alvarado. I lived in Burleson for years and live in Fort Worth now. I was feeling much better yesterday, but today my TEs are quite painful. Someone else mentioned this, but I think maybe with the swelling going down, my TEs are shifting and causing new discomfort. I had to take pain pills today for the first time in several days. I wish you luck in finding answers.

Hi well I saw the doc and they think that it is the tissue expander is rubbing against a nerve or has irritated my ribs. It didnt start till almost two weeks after my surgery. It is like a hot poker poking the spot right below my my breast area, I cannot walk around or use my left arm due to it aggrivating the pain spot. besides that I have normal bruising and soreness from the surgery but nothing major besides that one pain if I move. So I am not sure what to do, they put me on oxicoton yesterday and I have never taken that and it hasn't touched the pain. They did do a fill while I was there which didnt bother me, but it also did not help that pain spot either. I will keep you all posted, hopefully it will not hurt like this the whole time till I get the tissue expander out cause I dont know how long I can sit around and do nothing.

Oh and special K he did also say I had a pretty signigicant seroma in the same spot as the pain I am having, should I push them doing something about it, since the ne pain meds didn't help?

Thank you for your responses I haves been so thankful that there are so many people willing to help me through this. I called the doctor again today on my nurse advocates advice and the doctor is finally admitting that this is not normal. They are going to send me for some tests and xrays to see if we can figure out what is causing all this horrible pain. Fyi I have had two fills since my surgery and they have not made the pain any better or any worse.
