Nancy, I have done tons of reading about fatigue. Here's what I found out:
High protein diet helps. 1 gram of protein per kg (2.2 lbs) of body weight. If you weigh 120 lbs, then 60 g of protein.(www.breastcancer.org)
Omega 3 fishoil supplements also help. (Alfano CM, Imayama I, Neuhouser ML, et al. Fatigue, Inflammation, and ω-3 and ω-6 Fatty Acid Intake Among Breast Cancer Survivors. Journal of Clinical Oncology. 2012;30(12):1280-1287.)
American Ginseng--2000 mg per day also helps (Mayo Clinic research just released this study last month.)
I have had almost no fatigue and finished my regular treatment last week. In fact, I sometimes forget my ginseng till the afternoon and can't get to sleep.
No guarantees, but they are working for me.
Off now to go find cortisone cream!

Julz - I used Fruit of the Loom fasten up the front exercise bras from WalMart. No way could I pull over head or over these hips, LOL. You will want something you don't care so much about but I must say the Xclair and Aquaphor have washed out nicely. The Xclair was prescription, expensive and RO prescription. Never used aloe. Someone somewhere recommended Baby Calendula cream from Target. My RO wants me to keep something on for a while something gentle like Eucerin, etc., says I still need to peel a little. WTH - I finished May 23. I bought some at Target and though it is baby has a nice scent. Maybe a little too much scent for active rad tx though but whoever used it on here was in active treatment. Heard of My Girls cream, Miaderm, Jeans cream all I think not prescription. I resisted the Aquaphor for a while but finally learned to love it greasy and all.
I used thin camis (over my bras) from Dollar General that came up under SNB scar though were soft enough not to rub. I, too, wanted not to ruin my scrubs and it seems to have worked. Just make sure you can wiggle in/out of anything easily. The last thing I wanted was to struggle in the dressing room. I had heard of wearing shelf bra camis inside out; had a couple but never used them. Not sure if I could have stood the "jiggle factor" from wearing them.
-
All my white bras are now yellow on the right from my calendula cream. Oh well. At least my skin is better than it would have been without the calendula, right?

Happy 4th to all. A great day for many reasons but a day off from rads, WAHOO!! My skin is red and the area that has been exposed to sun previoulsy is very itchy and starting to feel like alligator skin. Lots of cream but RO isn't worried yet. I have had 18 out of 25, so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Napping many afternoons, but that seems to be the worst of it.
I am going braless and foobless alot of the time now. The only time I wear a bra is when I go to work. I am a bit lopsided at home, but itis far more comfortable.
Gentle 4th to all

Happy 4th! I actually haven't had any treatments this week. Monday was cancelled because the machine was broken and then they couldn't reschedule me for yesterday because other people took priority for makeup appointments. And they're closed today. I have mixed feelings about this - my skin has appreciated the break - I'd gotten a bumpy itchy red rash on my upper chest - but this means my ending date is pushed further out.
I've put cornstarch on it (it seems to be related to my sweating, especially when our power was out) and taken Motrin for my rash. I know others have used hydrocortisone cream but I didn't get the OK from my RO for that yet. The Motrin seemed to help a lot, working both on the inflammation & decreasing the itching. Using Miaderm, calendula & aloe on the rest - the pinkness is fading with this break in treatment.
And NancyHB, your naming pattern reminded me of that Seinfeld episode where Jerry has to figure out the girl's name which rhymes with a female body part....
-
Lagata - Man you're lucky that you have cute doctors! My male tech looks like Mr. Magoo. Very nice guy, though, so I guess that's all that matters
I saw the substitute RO on Tuesday, and he's a little Japanese man. If I would have stood next to him righty would have been at eye level (!).
Nancy - did you name your boobs? Lucy and Ethel? I'm chuckling just thinking about it!
Julz - I use the ahh bra, and I my aquaphor on it (which is like vaseline), then a gauze pad (stomach size) over it to protect the brah. The bra is SUPER thin. If it gets cold I'll look like I'm pointing in two different directions. :O

Happy 4th of July. So nice to have a mid week break. Only 5 treatments left for me, one regular and 4 boosts.
I was told my treated breast would shrink? Have you heard that? So far , I think it looks ok, just hard. Feel like I am carrying around a brick. My nipple is almost black and my breast is very red. Does anyone know if normal colors and textures return.
I asked my tech if I was cured yet? He said yes! Can't wait to hear that from my MO. I
see her in August.
I hope you are all having a nice day sans any pains. Thanks to Advil, I'm feeling pretty good. -
Someone remind me why a lumpectomy and rads was preferable over a UMX?
All I'm seeing at the moment is that I've chosen to keep a breast that will cause: continued pain from surgery and burns, will be too sensitive to touch, harder, scarred, smaller/larger, will still need mammograms and may still get another cancer. And I don't know about all of you but really it's of no psychological use to me during sex anymore.
Did I leave anything out?
So remind me what the advantage was again?

BIG HUGS JENN!! Your post just made me burst into tears...One of those days!!!Can't stop crying but I am right there with ya. That is ONE of my issues today. I feel like a big blubbering BABY! And I should be happy, my last rad was yesterday but I feel the opposite. UGH!!
Healing, comforting Hugs,
Denielle
-
Jenn hang in there. That boobie should heal up eventually. Stay strong for us girl!
-
PS. Staging today for me.
I have very mild lymphedema that extends a little ways down the side of my torso towards the breast. I'm sure praying that doesn't get worse and that they can miss zapping that part.
-
Sorry - didn't want to make anyone cry! HUGS!!!!
It was just my thoughts on "paper".
Today was 8 of 28. Nearly a 1/3rd of the way there... Feels less sore today than yesterday but my whole chest, including the other side, is looking pinkish... And I found myself yawning while driving home - at 4.30pm in the afternoon.
More hugs for everyone!
Jenn -
Jenn: Your post made me really stop and think - and yes, there's a part of me that wishes perhaps I'd made a different choice, for all the reasons you mentioned (and then some). I feel blessed that I had the choice (MX or not) that others don't always have...but don't know if either choice was the right choice for me - perhaps the lesser of two evils? Either way, I'm really over this stupid cancer and want to be "normal" again. Will we ever be?
Denielle: Congrats on being done with rads! I am sending you lots of healing and gentle hugs and hoping you start feeling better soon.
Akinto: Thanks for the suggestion of protein - I'm going to work on that. It's been incredibly hot here the last week and I've not been eating as much as I probably should - except popsicles. :-) Too hot to cook inside or out (101 yesterday). But there's always tuna and peanut butter and last night I made a batch of hummus - so I'll keep up with the protein (and I *wish* I weighed 120 pounds! Hopefully, maybe again one day...) I'll also ask about the supplements. Thanks for your help!
Mamabee: I remember that Seinfeld episode! "Mulva!" :-) I have a friend who's originally from a place in Canada named Regina (rhymes with vagina) so if I get desperate I've got a couple of options. Oh, and there's always "Delores." Yes, I name things - I started doing it when I was learning about Narrative Therapy techniques which has us externalize internal issues and give them a name - it's about separating ourselves from our problems, in a nutshell. It started as a joke, but I quickly found that naming some things allows me to separate myself from what's going on in my body - and gives me a feeling of control, I guess. Plus, it's kind of silly - and I'm all about trying to lighten the mood lately.
Off to 17/30 - then back to the AC. We're looking at 102 here today. Hugs to everyone on this Thursday morning.
-
Denielle - SO HAPPY for you that you are DONE! Please don't cry. I'm having a drink tonight to cheer you
Also, a UMX is not a 100% guarantee that you won't need rads. And the reconstruction stuff does NOT sound like a walk in the park. None of this is fun, none of this is that easy (IMO). We do what we gotta do and what's right for us.
-
Nancy - I still want to know if it's Ethel and Lucy!
-
Neeners - It is now! My right boob got jealous that she was being left out, so I named her Ethel. Wonder how much trouble these two are going to get into today?!
-
I had my staging today. The gals are not going to win any awards for the 'artwork' on my torso. At least they didn't use tattoos. They also are starting my treatments on Monday. Last week when I saw the doctor he said they would start in about 3 weeks. I was looking for more of a break but at least I'll get finished sooner. Everyone was nice and I was not uncomfortable. If the treatments are similar to the staging I should be fine.
-
Hey everybody,
22/25 treatments finished as of today--skin is light tan and that's about it, yay for MyGirls cream! Cording has tightened up, so I'm doing stretches on that.
Nancy, you mentioned your arm felt 'heavy' a while back--has that improved? I worry about LE for everybody now. Kitchenella, did your doctor or LE therapist have any advice about precautions to take during rads?
-
Tomorrow at 1230 I finish my 25/25 rad. Champagne is waithing for me in the fridge. It's like I can't believe it. I'm finished ...
))) skin is fine. No pain, just a little red above the collar bone and under my arm.
-
Congrats to you, rava! How wonderful!
-
Congrats Rava! I can only hope that we all finish up like you :-)
Jenn -
For those still going...
I have been eating a mini size protein bar on my way back to the car after each treatment. On the one day this week that I didn't have one with me I ended up feeling really ill with tiredness by a couple of hours later...
Jenn -
Congratulations Rava!!
-
Nancy...thank you about the yoga practice...starting on Monday! I love that you named them Lucy and Ethel! I have been eating a ton of protein and I drink whey green protein shakes also. I eat 6 smaller meals throughout the day. I am starting to feel tired too, but I think that's more from my pain an I do think the extra protein is helping. I take 2000mg vitamin d3 also and I drink up to 4 oz of aloe Vera juice a day, helps boost immune system. So I do think I feel stronger with these add ons than if I didn't do them.
Congrats Rava!
Jenn...I am right there with you on the decisions made. I saw my RO on Tuesday and he is concerned with my swelling now too. so now I am using tylenol arthritis to try to bring the swelling down and using cooling ice packs. He also told me to keep the techs informed if it is helping....it unfortunately isn't. The ice is helping to keep me cooler, but still swelling and is so uncomfortable and honestly just hurts! I told the techs today it was still swollen so they did do some scans today. To see whats happening.
The best news of the week....no more Billy Joel! Uptown girl has been put away! Now we have some soothing spa type music...all I had to say was who's the Billy Joel fan which made them laugh and then gave me options....amazing what a little music. Change can do!
#11 done today! -
RAVA - congratulations! It seems like you just started (at least to me, not to you!)
So thankful you made it through with such a good report about skin, too! Hooray!
-
Today my RO told me that I had an "angry nipple". For some reason, I found this to be hysterical. This is only after #13. I came home and told that to my husband. He got the weirdest look on his face. I burst out laughing. Humor where you find it I guess w/ this situation!!
-
Sweetpea - I had the same "diagnosis" and luckily the pain/redness went away after a couple of days. The nipple / areola is still all swollen and tender.
Rava - Congrats! It does seem like you just started last week!
Hildy - you're almost there! I'm officially over halfway done. 17/33. -
Lagata - for me, at least, it seemed like once I hit 50% it went a lot more quickly. You can see the light at the end of the tunnel!
-
I like that - "angry nipple." Sounds like an anti-hero or something with super powers. Hmmm...
Yesterday I noticed my nipple is starting to change. Much darker than normal. And very sensitive. It also seems to be getting bigger - but that could just be my imagination. I swear, before BC I never paid this much attention to my girls, but now I can't seem to keep my eyes and hands off of them.
-
Nancy - I know what you mean about paying attention to the girls! I keep thinking righty has shrunk. I noticed my nipple was darker, too, but some skin came off.
