Swimming Flat on One Side?

I am beginning to contemplate summer at the beach.  I have no problem going flat on one side.  I would prefer it to wearing a prosthetic.  However, I am size C to D on the remaining side and need support.  I have never had an easy time finding a bathing suit because I swim laps and would love a racing suit, but have always needed support.  So...now that I am down to one breast, I am really unsure.  If it has a built in bra, I will have something to fill on the surgery side that I don't want to bother filling.  If I get a racing suit, no support for the remaining breast.

This is what I am thinking...I need a sports bra that dries quickly.  That will probably lie flat over my incision, but give my remaining breast support.  Then I can wear a racing suit over it.  Or a swim shirt if I want.

Do any of you have any solutions to this?  And if I get a sports bra, where do I find one that dries quickly and will sit flat on my surgery side?  Any and all thoughts would be very welcome!!

Thanks,

Claire

I love to swim, used to swim laps often. Are you actually swimming laps after a UMX? I was in the pool about a week ago and did breast stroke and back stroke but a little nervous to do laps. That chest muscle was strong before but I guess I don't want to encourage LE or anything. I have had no signs of LE and surely do not want to get started.

I'm sorry I'm a AA cup in my remaining breast. I can camouflage my missing one pretty good. I work out and run with no bra at all, slightly lopsided. You present an interesting dilemma. My lap swimming bathing suits were alway very flat and tight, no cup at all. speedousa.com has some interesting choices.

Good luck and congratulations on being so active!

Rianne, thanks for the encouragement and feedback.  I haven't yet gone back to swimming laps, but I intend to.  My pt thinks it will be okay, if I take it slowly.  I am a little nervous about the laps, but I will just try to listen to my body and build into it slowly.  I will keep running and other activities as I rebuild the swimming.  I have never raced or anything, so I won't feel particular pressure to get my activity through swimming.  It must be nice to be able to put on a racing suit with no cups and carry it off.  I always wanted to be able to do that...I have always dreaded trying to find a suit with support that fits that will allow me to get through the water without feeling like I am dragging a parachute!!!

I think you sports bra idea might work. I had a BMX, so I go flat. Just chiming in to encourage you to get back to swimming. I had surgery 10months ago. I can't remember when I started swimming again(maybe 2 months after surgery). The first time, I was only able to swim 1 lap(might have just been scared). Swimming really helped me get my mobility/range of motion back. Now with my plantar faciitis keeping me from running, I really depend on it. The leg cramps from Tamox sometimes cause me to cut my swim short.

I swim freestyle, with kicking & pulling sets. I had already started swimming again when I found informationn that freestyle might not be the best following MX. I never had PT & my BS thinks it' OK.    CLC-  Do you have LE?    I not not sure I'd swim laps if I had LE, I'd have to reearch it further. Hope you're back to swimming soon & glad your running is going well.

Coraleliz...thanks for chiming in with encouragement!  I can use all I can get!  I don't have LE, but I am cautious about it and concerned about it.  I sometimes get pain when lifting 3lb weights (after many reps) and stop.  I have had a heavy feeling in that arm once or twice since the surgery, and stopped immediately and seem to be fine.  My pt has mainly been there to tell me I really am okay...and to relax a little!

I am really glad to hear you are swimming and that, other than leg cramps, you are doing well with it.  I am sorry to hear about the plantar facitis.  That is a bummer, but thank goodness for the swimming!  It is good to know you can just keep going!  Strong women just can't be held down, right?  Cool

I love swimming and can feel it really stretch out my chest muscles. I think it helps to prevent scar tissue from forming too. And I have my best sleeps after a swim.

Thought I would update.  I found some underarmour sports bras that are quick dry.  I bought some Lands End bathing suit bottoms and have been wearing them with a swim shirt (rash guard).  It seems to work out pretty well.

I have been easing into laps and am up to about a half mile, easy.  I am hesitant to let it rip and go for speed, though I want to.

I can say that the laps have helped loosen up the whole area more than it had even with pt.  I am glad to be swimming, though it is not now my means of getting high intensity exercise.

Also, I can say that going to the beach and pool flat on one side has been relatively uneventful socially.  A few people go out of their way to smile and be very friendly.  A few avoid eye contact in a very pronounced way.  Most seem totally oblivious to my very lopsided chest.

Thank you, again, to all of you that offered up encouragement and advice.  I hope this finds each of you well!

Hi, All, this topic caught my eye as I had a unimx too and I credit swimming with saving me (mentally and physically) post op.

I have always been a swimmer. Swim about a kilometer or a k and a half a few times a week. I had my mx at the end of July and in late aug I was back in the water. I have not had any problem w LE or range of motion.

I'm an ample c cup on the other side and not wearing a prosthesis while I swim bothered me more. Felt unbalanced and also just too self conscious. I bought three Lands End mastectomy suits (love them) and a prosthesis that I use just for swimming. This is fine, simple.

Hope this is helpful. Keep swimming!

CLC- Great to hear about your return to swimming! Happy it's going well for you. I'm not using swimming for "intensity" yet either. Although I probably could at this point. Contemplating attending a master's workout & see what happens when I'm pushed by a coachUndecided

Shari...I am glad to hear that the Land's End suits are working for you.  It is great to be in the water!

Coraleliz...Keep me posted!  If you decide to go to the master's, I'd love to know how it turns out!

Hi ladies. I also find that no-one seems to notice my lopsided swimsuit, but I use a lightweight swim prosthesis when I'm with friends or acquaintances. Family don't mind either way. I took up swimming again in January but a recurrence has knocked me back a bit. Looking forward to getting back in the water soon.

    Cheers,

This is my first visit back to the site in many months. My UMX surgery went very well and I needed no further treatment. I was back to yoga in 10 days (being very careful but I’m sure that the twists helped me to break scar tissue loose from my ribs) and back in the pool in about 6 weeks (had to wait for the incision to heal).

I came back and found this topic which is right where I am now. I am DD on the other side and have been going flat with a Lands End high neck aqua suit which has been working out very well. Recently, though, it has started to pull and dig into the MX side and is getting uncomfortable. The same thing is happening with my bras. So much so that I am actually contemplating having another MX on the good side. (I had considered reduction but when my surgeon described it I decided it was way too complicated.)

So I am looking for another solution besides a MX and am here. I will definitely research the underarmor sports bra (is this a brand name? Just googled it and see it is). CLC – which model did you buy? Does it pull against your flat side or is it comfortable for both sides? I was left with a slight puff above the scar next to my armpit and this is the area that is getting sore.

Like you CLC I have found that going flat on one side has been a non issue for both me and, it appears, those around me. I was afraid that I would feel unbalanced but this has not been the case. I far prefer flat to the prosthesis which I got early on. I’ll probably be donating it and the bras to someone else.

Hi Susan!!  It is good to "see" you again!

The bra I have is this one:

    http://www.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/womens-gotta-have-it-sports-bra/pid1222958-678

I am not sure it is ideal; I got it at TJMaxx (which has odd assortments of overruns and discontinueds).  It was nice because I could get colors that looked less like bras and more like bathing suits.  It sits pretty flat over the mx side and supports my breast well enough.  However, if I wear it all day, I get sore across the snb area.  If I had money to burn, I would look at the TYR bathing suits.  They look good.

Wishing you the best of luck!!  And happy swimming! :)

Well, I bought an Ahh bra yesterday and will see today if it is an improvement.  At first glance it looks like it will not be very supportive but will at least lie flat on the MX side.  Since I don't do bouncy stuff anymore it might work.

Being a uni was tricky, I have to say I never felt comfortable with it in 18 months, but then again I did not find this group until recently.

Mostly I could not tolerate a bra, so I wore looser clothing and a scarf...but not good for the summer. By the summer, I wore the Still You Cami with a microbead form, and it looks "close enough".

Now I am flat, both sides. I started needing biopsies on my remaining breast and I cried right in the doctor's office, and he explained the best option for me might be a second mastectomy. No cancer was found, but 2 precancerous conditions did turn up. So it worked out ok for me.

The hard part is I bought clothing to be a "uni"and now I am flat and don't even care for that loose clothing...so I feel like I am in wardrobe chaos!

I am not much of a shopper, but for many, that would be the perfect excuse for a spree!  I personally like second hand stores for keeping costs down.  I hope you find some fun in sorting out your chaos!
