Tests needed prior to a pbmx

Hi Everyone!

I am having a pbmx soon. I have not had an MRI in 18 months. My last mammo was 7 months ago. What tests should I have prior to the surgery? I had a fibrodenoma removed when I was 18. No other biospsies.

I am perusing this to hopefully reduce my chances of getting bc. I have a very strong family history.

Thank you so much,

Elise

I would consult with a Breast Surgeon and they will let you know what updated testing you might need. Every doctor/surgeon has their own requirements or so it seems. Have you had the genetic testing? It would seem that only one fibroadenoma removal might not be enough to warrant a prophy BMX. Insuance companies are getting picky about stuff. I would be hesitant to give any advise on testing without more information.

    Good luck in your quest.

Thank you. I am negative for Brca 1/2. Very significant family history.

I assume you are not doing sentinel node biopsy as part of the bmx? I did not do them when I had mine.

Here's what was suggested to me: mammo and MRI within 3 months of the surgery.  If they see anything they can biopsy it and know if you have an issue that will need SNB.  They will run normal blood work, some hospitals require an EKG.  They will run pregnancy test.

The main thing is to, hopefully, identify any lurking cancer so they will know if they need to do a sentinel node biopsy.  You can ask your surgeon about this and get their opinion.

    Hi Beacon,

Thank you very much. I see my bs today; I will ask her about the tests.

What did they recommend?  When I had my PBMX, surgeon was pretty sure nothing would be found - so I had no tests, never had an MRI, she did warn me that if anything showed up in the biopsy they might need to go back in.

    Hi Valerie,

My bs is ordering a MRI. My ps requires a mammo. I will have an EKG and bloodwork. Thank you so much for answering my question.

    Always,

    Elise
