Just had a second mastectomy + SNB. How will I know if my existing lymph edema is getting worse or if I am developing problems on the new side if the diagnosis is based on measurements as compared to the normal arm? I don't have a normal arm any more--do I?

    Hi, Cindy,

Really glad you've got that surgery behind you!Smile Hope you're resting up, getting some pampering and healing well.

Do you already have a lymphedema therapist? If so, she's taken arm measurements all along, right? She should have the record of your other arm as well. You'll want to see her on a regular basis for follow-up, so you can track your progress with your LE arm and keep track of the other side as well.

If you DON'T have a well-qualified LE therapist, you can ask any doctor on your team for a referral. Here's how to find a well-trained one near you:

S/he will take baseline arm measurements that you can use for follow-up comparison, each arm being compared over time with the earlier measurements. And s/he can also evaluate your current swelling and help you learn to get it under control and keep it that way. All good!Smile

Best of all, LE care is non-invasive, and there are no drugs involved--whew! Quite a relief after all we go through with the bc.

Please keep us posted. Be well!
    Binney
