I smoked a pack a day for over 30 years. I tried to quit by chewing the nicotine gum but ended up smoking and chewing the gum which is a big no no.
I started taking Wellbutren and swear by it. You can continue to smoke for a week or two when you start using it. After a few days every time you smoke you feel sick to your stomach so you can't smoke. I've been using Wellbutren for 10 months and have not had a single cig or craving. This has been a miracle to me as I was a chain smoker and no matter what I tried nothing worked. I'm at the point of starting hormone therapy so I've been researching the options and found that if you are on Tamoxifen you can not be on Wellbutren. I will not go off Wellbutren because I don't want to start smoking again so I will have to discuss with my mo the alternatives, which there are. Good luck everyone. It's an extremely hard addiction to overcome. I truly believe if you really really want to quit you will find what works for you and keep at it until you do. If I can do it anyone can! -
dunesweeper and charliegirl, you both have positive outlooks and a great desire to quit, that's the most important thing. We will all be here to cheer you on in your journey against the tiny white cylinder, that can exert such power, but NOT stronger than you. I was a 30+ smoker, a pack to a pack and a half a day. I swore I would continue smoking if I broke my jaw and had to be wired shut. With the aid of the e cig and all the wonderful women here, I am now a 16+mo. non-smoker. If I can do it, you can do it too. It isn't easy, use any tip you pick up here and from VJ's pamphlet and it is doable. Post often to get support and to let us know your progress. Karen

I've been a non-smoker twice since 9/2009. The first time for one week shy of two years. This time, since January 13th, once I learned that I wouldn't be allowed to have reconstruction if I were smoking.
Both times I've used Chantix. I've been off it for about two months now and use a 0mg e-cig for those moments when I need a crutch.
Just for today, I did not smoke.

-
Galsal, 5 months, HOORAY for you, and just for today we did not smoke!!!
-
Well, had my appt. today, but still no date. Now I have to wait for the hospital scheduler to call me...wonder how long that will take. Sheesh. This whole process has been very trying on me. I could write quite a long narrative of the appt.'s that have stressed me more then helped me....but I'll spare you all the details. Your pretty much at the mercy of where the docs and insurance companies send you.
So, for now I am going to set a date of 6/22 to quit. I will hopefully have a surgery date by then, and I also need to get through a pelvic ultrasound tomorrow. There is some concern about stomach bloating and weight gain that I have experienced in the last couple of months. Fingers crossed that I will not get more bad news.
6/22 - Quit day!!
-
Galsal, wow 5 months! Sometimes it can be a struggle but we are all on the way to freeing ourselves from the little devil. Charliegirl, see how proactive you are. You chose a quit date without knowing the surgery date. That's one more positive step for you! Good going ladies!
-
WTG Charliegirl! I'm proud of you for choosing a quit date!
-
I got great news today...surgery scheduled for July 3rd!! YAY!! No celebrating the 4th for me...but that's o.k!!
-
Charliegirl, she gots a quit date, she gots a surgery date, she's a-takin charge and a-kickin ass! Good for you, Charliegirl.
Congrats on 5 momentous months Galsal!
My surgery is Friday, and my knees are knocking. But I am not smoking today. -
Awesome! All of you!
-
Thank you Maddy!!

And good luck with your surgery...I will keep you in my prayers.
-
Charliegirl - Way to go girl! It great when a plan finally comes together.
MaddyMac - I will organize a pocket party. That should help calm you down. I have dibs on the blue hair cap - LOL!
-
MaddyMac, just went through a surgery with my knees a'knockin, awhile ago the temptation to smoke would have been fierce, but now I stuck a piece of gum in my mouth and kept on truckin. By the way, wrong thing to do before surgery, the stomach starts manufacturing acid to break down the food it assumes it's getting, they had to give me extra pepcid in my IV so I didn't get sick from the anaesthesia. Also needed a breathing treatment before the surgery due to the damage I'd already done to myself. Extra incentive to quit and stay quit.
-
I have fallen woefully behind here and need to do some catching up!!!
Welcome to all our new girls....
Charliegirl,
You may not be able to celebrate July 4th but you can imagine that all of the fireworks are in celebration of you!!!
Maddy,
Please know we ALL will be thinking about you on Friday!!!
Ladies,
It has been a really long time since I posted our quit smoking roll call.... Thinking it might be time for an update.... For the new girls... I keep a sort of unofficial list of the ladies who post here and what their quit dates were... Helps to learn everyone's name, where they are in the quitting process and let's us know who is celebrating a milestone.... Haven't updated it since page 241 in April.... Take a look...
If anyone would like to be included, post or PM me your quit date.... And, as always, if you are on the list and would like to be removed, post or PM as well....
Hope you all are doing well..... And remember.... Just for today..... -
Good for you Maddy. I, too, am not smoking today. Good luck on your surgery. I hope you will let us know how you make out as soon as you feel up to it.
-
Dunesleeper, hanging tough! Proud of you.
SeasideMemories, what a kind thing to do for all of us. I would like to be included, and my quit date is May 16, 2012.
Jo, thank you. Your chosen headgear is reserved for you, and the shirt I'm wearing has deep pockets. In them you will note that I have stored Reese's Mini Peanutbutter Cups for your enjoyment. I feel braver already. My doc gave me a surgical scrrub cap to wear for my operation day that is black with white Jolly Rogers (skull and crossbones) - the skulls have pink ribbons on them like a kercheif. Gosh, that's hard to describe. Anyway I feel like a warrior in it.
Karen, thanks for the warning - I probably would have had gum without it. Glad that you seem to be doing well after your surgery.
Peace and healing to all. -
My official quit date is March 29. I'd love to be on the list. I'm on a lot of lists already, but this one sounds positive.
-
Hi Maddy. I quit Feb 11, 2012. However, I have had some cheats in the past month or so, generally 1 every couple of days. Still, I am claiming 2/11/12 as my quit date as long as I don't go back to it any worse than I have and as long as I make the days between them longer and longer.
-
Congratulations to al those setting quit days, be sure to mark it on your calender, those days quickly build into weeks and months. Karen
-
Hey there ladies!! While I haven't posted, I've been keeping an eye on the goings on here :-) Best wishes to those of you with upcoming surgeries - may you find peace on the other side!
As for my quit date, please add me as a May 7, 2012 (similar to others I had a couple of cheaters leading into my surgery, but to me they were just 'slips'). BTW, my replacement habbit is a sippy cup with a straw with ice cold water. Enjoy the day ladies ... I'm off for a little stroll.
-
For those of you who believe in positive thinking, I suggest: Just for today, I am smokefree.
(When saying affirmations--the brain doesn't "hear" the word not--when saying- Just for today, I will not smoke--the brain registers--Just for today, I will smoke.)
-
gals..as long as I'm in.hospital bed I didn't smoke ..but then allowed to get up...my addiction.
..been struggling for 20+yrs.
So am back smoking! but..smoking way less. & yes am keeping a secret lol..final path dx June 25 -
SeasideMemories, please add me to the list. I quit on September 1, 2011 and proud of myself for not having a single smoke since that date. Not easy with all the stress in my life. I do chew lots of gum! If I could do it after chain smoking for 30+ years, anyone can!,
-
Ohhhhh, I knew things were starting to go a little too smoothly! Today I get a call from my PS (a day after having my surgery scheduled), telling me that him and my BS conferred and decided that it would be much better to put off my surgery for 6 weeks...for me to quit smoking. Gee, you think you coulda conferred before you had my surgery scheduled??
But even tho it is quite a let down, I am still determined to quit Friday. It is even more important now!
-
Today was smoke free for me. Thankfully, have passed three of four preop tests for reconstructive surgery....my ultimate incentive!
-
Way to go Gal!!
-
Galsal, your hardwork on quitting is totally paying off, I'm sure the fourth test will go as smoothly, what is the date of your surgery?
-
Yay ladies! I'm so proud of all of you. Galsal, 5 months! Charliegirl, you are in control! MaddyMac, you are doing great .... surgery date and no smoking! Tough one ladies but all of you are so strong!!!!!!! Great going!
-
Oooh such rotten luck..sorry to hear! Do you have lung problems? I have copd/asthma & thought there'd be issues..but my BS said ..'dont stop smoking' but cut down a lot..as the lungs go into a new phase & create much more mucous.it felt good the 1st 24hrs..then I realized I was always with someone..so made it easier tho not smoke. Left on my own I'm terrible ..no will power...yet ..I'm 5 days.post op ..lots of problems ...want To get on it again ..stopping it completely
-
Well I'm struggling but since it helps me to put it out there, I'm just going to say that I am not going to smoke today.
