Question about Tea
Hi there
I had a DIEP flap after DCIS which was estrogen positive. 6 months on am trying to eat healthy but of course strike a balance. My friend told me about Roobios (Redbush) Tea so I bought a box today and tried it. It tastes lovely and is caffeine free. I was curious about it so googled it and surprise surprise something came up about estrogen levels and saying to avoid it if you have had ER+ BC. It is not as if I plan to drink it all day just a cup or two a day. It then led to me looking up other teas and black tea seems to have the same cautious advice! I cannot abide green tea by the way. What does anyone else think? I am English and love my tea and coffee lol! I am starting to get really frustrated reading stuff like this actually (sorry to vent) it seems, tea, types of beans, soya etc are no good yet I am vegan and try to be healthy - feel so p*ssed off sometimes! I hardly ever drink alchohol yet I see people around me eating red meat, drinking copious amounts, eating junk processed crap! Alchohol raises estrogen levels yet here I am stressing out over tea. Advice please and many thanks!

There are no short cuts to go to the topics I have started anymore and doesn't seem like anyone replies to anything. This used to be my place for advice and support am thinking of leaving!

bexy, sorry no one has replied to your thread. I don't know anything about that tea specifically, but personally, I don't think a little is going to hurt. If every piece of food or drink we stuck in our mouths was analyzed, I'm sure something else would be estrogenic. My advice, whatever you want....in moderation. I know this probably isn't the kind of info you were looking for but I didn't like your post going unanswered. Hopefully, someone who's clear on phytoestrogens in food will give you better advice.

When it was available, my Mom drank a tea from tumeric from Japan. But for some reason, some government agency does not allow it to be imported now. So periodically we would make it from tumeric root. She also makes a ginger tea. She still drinks green tea. One of the concerns about herbal teas is to make sure it doesn't interact with any medicine. One can just ask their doc. But it is nice to relax with a cup of tea.

bexy, I agree that some threads seem to get buried before they're answered. As far as phytoestrogens in food, it is very confusing. The experts don't even agree with each other. Some say phytoestrogens are good for ER+ breast cancer, because they bind to the cancer cells and in so doing block the real estrogen. Others say to stay away from them. I agree with gracie, that moderation is the key. The following article is very technical, and I don't pretend to understand it all, but if you skip down to the "conclusion" part of this abstract, it helps you to see a summary of some of the studies that have been done.

Basically dietary amounts we get from foods are such a low dose of phyoestrogens, it probably doesn't make much difference. It's supplements in higher doses that may be harmful to us ER+. What I'm doing is trying to strike a balance in my diet, and eat in moderation the foods that are questionable. There's no right or wrong to it. Do what you think is best.

Thankyou people!! I can see the Dashboard link and that brings up my posts! I think will carry on drinking tea and coffee I only have a few cups a day anyway (and with sugar even that is bad apparently lol). I think I could spend the rest of my life mulling and fretting over estrogens in foods (and I agree they are small amounts), whilst others around me are drinking, overweight, smoking, all proven risk factors for all types of cancers! I am a healthy person and would count my only vices as vegan cupcakes and caffeine! I can't seem to get on with herbal teas so will stick with what I am having. I guess if I was having HRT or estrogen/soya supplements that may be a reason for concern. Thanks again!

Try white tea. Much smoother than green tea and even better for you.
