Does Navelbine/Xeloda "fix" bone met pain?
I put this post on another board and have put it here to because I really need some advice.
A question to you seasoned Stage IV peoples about bone mets!
My first chemo failed (viable cells in lympnodes after chemo) so my onc put me on Navelbine and Xeloda. I have had pretty bad left hip pain (not in my joint) since end of February - began as intermittent and mainly at night, gradually becoming pretty constant (sometimes both hips). I have told my onc this several times and he kind of ignored it until last visit when I told him that I was pain free for 4 days after my second cycle of Navel/Xloda (from days 9-12) - he said "well lets see what happens next time". So this cycle I have been pain free for 6 days (days 9 - 16 which is today) although I am starting to get a little twinge in my hip tonight. Anybody else get this effect?
So my two main questions - if the pain in my hip has gone in line with the chemo cycles this suggests the drugs are working BUT this also really means there was something there for them to work on....right? I feel silly to be jumping to bone mets.... It seems so paranoid because I haven't even finished initital treatment (even though I began last October), but treatment has not gone so well and the staging isn't so good. Should I insist to my onc that I get a scan of my hip?

Hi Sian,
I don't have an answer about Navelbine, but I wanted to post and say that I can't believe your onc hasn't given you a scan already! I would definitely insist on it. As a point of reference, I've had bc twice (my onc thinks the 2nd one was a new primary, even though it was in the exact same spot as the first one) and I'm considered "cured". Yet, I've had hip pain on and off for the last 2 weeks, called him today and he immediately had me in for an x-ray (nothing showed up there, thank goodness) and I have a bone scan next week. So I would say that a scan for you is DEFINITELY in order. Hope that helps a little. Hang in there,
Amy

I agree that you should have a scan.
I don't have bone mets, but chemo could definitely shrink the bone mets, and lessen the pain, if that is what it is.

Thanks Aimster & Lauriesh you have confirmed my thoughts- I see my onc next Thursday 21st.. I will insist on a scan then. My onc is really good - I thought but he doesnlt seem to be reacting very well in this instance .. I think he is worried that I might fall apart as the road has not been easy - but I m not a baby.
Just about to finish my last cycle of cehmo and exactly the same thing has happened - pain in hip during the rest week and it left when the drugs started again. Things are getting worse - I now have a distorted ribcage - but that's another post!
Aimster - I'm really pleased for you that your scan was clear.
