Hi Amy, That's great you got your appts! Is your Rad appt your consult to find out how many tx you will have?
I think I overdid a bit yesterday. Went shopping in the morning, out to visit my sister and more shopping in the afternoon, then my boss came over till midnight to go over some over-due reports. I got a good 8 1/2 hours sleep though and will take it easy today.
I decided to go back to work on tues as I kinda go stir crazy staying at home and my daughter is in school. I am so behind in reports and assessments at work that the stress of that is just as bad as waiting lol so I need to catch up a bit before treatments start.
Hope everyone is having a lovely day

Tx = treatment

Hi Amy,
I guess I'm confused. You were DX with DCIS (ductal carcinoma insitu) which means it has not travelled. I actually had DCIS for 17 years and I knew it from a biopsy and the margins were not clear. But a great surgeon in Chicago suggested we watch it, get mammograms every six months, after 5 years every year. Yes, 17 years later a very tiny (Johns Hopkins pathology) said >1mm of IDC. Then I also had a small cluster of DCIS come back, so I went ahead and had a UMX. No chemo, no radiation. I thought DCIS is treated differently than Invasive. And if the surgeon found all your nodes (17!) clear....sorry, I don't understand this course of action.

So... not sure if I feel relieved, confused, or just still in waiting mode... just got back from meeting with surgeon, given the fact that this is DCIS, but has presented with some "non standard" features, the plan is for a lumpectomy with a sentinel node biopsy BUT not to be scheduled for 8 weeks, because they want to do BRCA testing (my aunt passed away from ovarian cancer at 29yrs old) so IF the BRCA testing comes out positive, then that would change the course of action, and BCRA test results take 6-8 weeks even when expedited apparently... also, while there the BS found a lump on the left side that she wants ultrasound-ed as a "baseline"... so back in for an ultrasound next week...
So - best case scenario - BRCA results come back negative I have a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy sometime in August, and then likely radiation...
Worst case scenario - BRCA comes back positive and we're looking at a whole different ball game....
Part of me was so relieved to hear lumpectomy... but another part thinks, if we treat this one hunk at a time... will these dense breasts keep me on pins and needles for the rest of my life??
Ugh - anyhow, choice is made for now - August will bring a lumpectomy & genetic testing results... this summer will be a waiting game... not exactly how I pictured entering into my 40th year!

well got my diagnostic mamo switched to Tuesday and they will give me the results then
so staying positive that this is a cautious person and not time to panic yet
-
Ms sunshine Hey I go to my Rads appointment on 19th to see what they say about the pathology report of the margins not being clear. Its up to them if I have to go back and have more tissue taken out.
-
OM12 heres hoping for the best case scenario. Such a long wait for you :S
Proud that's great you got in sooner. Praying for good results! Let us know how it goes.
Amy so sorry about the margins. That is one of my fears. How soon after the surgery did you find out? I'm hoping because I haven't heard anything that it's good news. Problem is I still havent heard the final from the biopsy (ER/ PR +/- etc.) and no one spoke to me after surgery. I can't seem to get any info at this point so I decided to just wait till the 25th and get all the info then. i've also decided to think it is the best possible news to keep sane. Please keep me posted on ur RADS appt.
-
Proud - how did your mammo go?
Amy - how are you feeling?
Hope everyone else is well
-
well the guy at the mamo center on Tuesday said I need a biopsy to check the junkie stuff found that was not there last time, nurse there said this guy is super cautious and asks for redos a lot, had an ultra sound the same time
called the BS & Onco and they are both surprised I think, any how, got an appt with the BS person for next Friday so she can see what sort stuff is going on. She has the written report as of now
bummers and a half but actually not feeling too nutty about it, onco called them calcifications so hoping it is not a problem
fun and cam

Proudtospin--Darn! I'm sure many of us can look forward to similar episodes in our futures. I'll be thinking of you Tuesday!

I'm going very well. I went back to work this week. Under my arm is still healing and a little sore still. I go to the Chemo dr tomorrow, not really sure what he is going to say...Chemo or not?
Ms. How are you feeling now?

I took my daughter to our family doctor today to get her needles and while I was there i asked for copies of all my reports from the mammogram on. He didn't give me the pathology report from the lumpectomy but he did give me the biopsy report.
So the biopsy said DCIS with areas of invasive ductal carcinoma. The surgeon didn't tell me that part. Maybe he didn't want me to worry until he found out just how much was invasive.
I think I should have waited until my follow-up appt on monday because now I'm worried. I was convinced it was DCIS and would only need radiation because I haven't heard otherwise.

mssunshine 71,
Can you call the BS office and tell them what you found out and find out if he can call you back ?
Wishing you all the best !
-
had an appt with th BS to go over my results and figure out the next step (am sure that at min biopsy is on the board), well my appt was tommorrow and today her office called to say she had a personal emergency and needed to reschedule till next week
can you hear me scream?
of course I now have all the reports so will make myself nuts reading them
can you hear the screams? I need to follow my own advise and do some yoga breathing....
-
The screaming sounds from this thread got our attention! proudtospin, it's too bad when appointments have to be pushed back; what a disappointment for you! Yoga breathing sounds like a good plan, once you're finished with those comforting screams.
A lot of testing and waiting going on here. If you ever want to learn more about the terms, treatments, tests and things like what every line of a pathology report means, the main Breastcancer.org site is a great place to check. Just type your keyword/s into the search box to learn more.

thanks Mod
the info I have learned from this site is ...well, enormous and I have my list of questions for the next appt and really have to thank you enormously for this site
in the mean time, yoga breathing, spending time with pals, a massage, facial, likely a mani and a pedi to keep cool and calm in 100 degree whether

Proudtospin: How incredibly frustrating!!!
Still hoping that it's nothing. Hang in there.
-
Proud - So sorry you are being put through so much frustration! The wait is so stressful!
-
Proud,
That's a bummer, waiting is the worst part... sending poitive vibes and prayers you're way...
-
I am at least occupied with construction guys this weekend, flooring is being replaced and they are coming tommorro
one of those things I did a few weeks ago when life seemed a bit more orderly~~
thanks for all the positive thoughts, easier when talking to folks who get it!
-
proud - my last mammo (which I wasn't at all worried about going in) had me screaming before I got out of there. Had the mammo, then had a second mammo, then had ultrasound, the another ultrasound - before they finally said - "oh, you're fine" and let me go. But what I thought was going to be a 15 minute breeze turned into a 2 or 3 hour sweat. I know they want to be sure, but by the end of the 2nd hour I was planning my funeral...

Go ahead and scream, now

I was driving home from work when the doctor called. I was benign at the biopsy, clear on the breast MRI, but the lumpectomy found DCIS, plus lots atypia and lots of other stuff going on. I was driving so I could not absorb it all, so the road through breast cancer begins. I will know more next week after talkig to the surgeon and the Oncologist. My name is Lisa.
-
gardengumby, yeah a year ago everyone was using the word "cure" for me so this year, not worried till the letter arrived saying oops, found something!
guess keeping busy this coming week is the best for me
so you just can't tell when a new surprise arrives
-
My follow-up from the lumpectomy is tomorrow. So nervous. Can't wait to get it over with!!
-
Good luck tomorrow, mssunshine! I hope they are more communicative with you and that you get reassuring news.
-
Thank you agrp1
