Truncal/ Breast Lymphedema anyone else out there?

This is all new to me and the ladies in "I hate LE.." group are great... Just wondering if anyone else has the breast LE without the arm involvement.. I go for my first PT appointment next weds. and Just like to hear from others with this.. All I heard so far - you need compression bra asap.. Any experience are welcome. I need to know what is up for me next.

    I had a bmx and though I have not been officially diagnosed with truncal lymph. my pt is worried about it. I have to wear a compression cami, bras make it worse for me. I get a lot of swelling around my scar line and around to my back, where I have another scar from surgery when I was 4. My pt thinks the old scar tissue is blocking my lymph drainage. I know when I do not where the cami it is a lot worse. I also have slight swelling in both of my arms and have been wearing a sleeve on both sides this past week. I feel like a mummy when I finally get all dressed! I am interested in hearing other replies as well.

    Hi GMA and bak:  I have truncal LE (breast, side and a bit on the back) plus some in my extreme upper arm.  I saw an LE therapist a few months after my surgery but the LE seems to be worse since that time.  She's a member of the LANA group but wasn't very good so you'll need to find someone you feel is helping you.  I know there's a list we should consult but as I said, the person I saw didn't help much but the second one I started seeing has seen me since and has been helpful.  You'll need to experiment unless you're lucky on the first try.  The first one didn't recognize my LE of the breast and thought it was just a little bit in the arm whereas the second just looked and diagnosed me right away as it was that obvious and started treatment immediately.  I think I went weekly at first, then every 2 wks, then 3 wks and now as needed.  I have a manual massage at the office and also an arm pump applied for 20 min.  I do manual LE massage on myself once or twice a day and that helps a lot.

    Breast/truncal LE is supposed to be rather difficult to diagnose and you may want to use some compression.  If mine is bothering me I'll sleep in an Ahhh bra for a few days and I'll also insert something to help when wearing a bra, including a Swell Spot I bought from Lymphedema Products but you'll not want to do anything until you get directions from your therapist as we're all different in how the LE affects us.  I'm going to try the Ledder or something like that (not sure what it's called) treatments that we can find online on youtube.  They say it helps. 

    Kira and Binney are the experts here on LE and can help you with most any question.  They're very kind and supportive and know more than anyone about our problem.  Good luck.  I'll be anxious to hear what your therapist says.

    I have mild lymohodemia in my boobie

    I confess that I wear my reg bras and sort of lax on the massage that the PT person showed me so not a good source

    I have not flown since all this occured but would definitely buy compression garment of some sort if I was traveling as I know folks for whom this triggered the problem

    Gma, I have truncal LE that involves mostly my left (mx) side, and my breast, back and upper arm to a lesser degree.  The #1 thing that helps me is wearing only sports bras (no more wires) with wide band side compression.  Also, not getting overheated (no hot baths, hot tubs, overheated exercising) is important, as any of those things can set off a painful flair, as can stressing my upper left side with weights, which I do, but very carefully.  Self massage also helps a lot when it happens, but it's definitely better to prevent it.  I've also noticed that my most recent flares have been getting worse (I'm 4 years post mx), and I'm concerned that if they continue to worsen or become more frequent, the LE could eventually involve my lower arm.  So keeping it under control is a high priority.  At their worst, my flares literally feel like someone is stabbing me in the side with broken glass.    

    It's good that you're aware of the problem and hopefully can keep it to a minimum.     Deanna

    Amen to the sports bra. Make sure the side area is pretty deep, so that it doesn't cut into the underarm area. Walmart makes a fine, cheap sports bra (3 for $9.00!) that has seen me through.

    Also, I do self massage with a small Nerf football. Place it under your arm on the affected side, and squeeze. Even though my arm isn't affected, I find that frequent arm elevation keeps mine under control.

    Thank you all for your Ideas and support. Let's keep this one going just for all the newbies that start asking. Just like to help whomever we can. :-)

    I am a bit new to all this LE stuff, and I know I don't like it! Why does it hurt? My arms, yes both, will get very tired and heavy feeling, and my chest and back area feel tight. I also get a raw feeling on my arm, real sensitive like a burn, but no rash or redness can be seen. I like my pt, but got off schedule for about 3 weeks and I can not believe how bad it has gotten without her. I get to go on Monday and she is not going to be happy. I am bad about doing my self massage, as my arms get tired. Are there regular massage therapists that can do this also? I would have to pay for it out of pocket but I think it would be worth it. I will check out the other threads also.

    Bumping up -

    I did find out I have Lymphedema of the breast - Went to the LE Therapist yesterday, He is giving me a few things to work on.. I feel like I've been hit by a mac truck - it will hopefully get better soon.. Just drinking water and massaging the spots the therapist told me to massage... my good side is arguing with me now :P  

    Anyone have any other ideas on compression bras - just looking at alternatives to the sports bra and pad - that are killing me at the moment... but that must be what happens when you start moving fluid around??? Am I correct or do I need to talk to the therapist - don't see him until monday.

    Gma, do call the therapist. A certain amount of discomfort is likely, but unless he was breaking up fibrosis (which does hurt) you shouldn't be in outright pain. Keep us posted!

    Binney - I did have a conversation with my LE therapist - I called him about which way the lines go on the jovpak pad.. and then told him how I was feeling.. he appologized LOL - told me to take the night off right now until we get things moving correctly and walked over what I should do until our next appt.  - I got up this morning - felt better but as I am sitting here and doing my computer job - my underarm is leaking ??? Just sweating more than ever - I don't sweat like that - ever! LOL Ok so I am moving fluid somewhere.... I can tell, this is going to be a fun day when I go into the fabric store for my other work today Tongue out

    Edit: Binney - He did work on the fibrosis a little - the scar is full of it from radiation.
