Hi everyone. My name is Jackie. Just last week my mom broke the news to me that she has stage 2 breast cancer. It was the hardest thing Ive had to hear and process in my life. A week has passed and I still can't believe that my mom has to go through this. Although not as emotional as I was, I still am very shocked and scared. My mom waited almost 2 weeks before she told me because she felt the stress of it all would affect me during finals and AP testing. I know I must be strong for my mom, but I wont have any peace until she has surgery. I'm not sure whether or not she is just having a lumpectomy or a mastectomy... All I know is that I'm scared and I feel so helpless and alone. You never think it can happen to your family and then bam it just hits you with such a great force you can't even breathe. All I can do is pray and be there for her...

Im sorry Jackie. Its funny I hate when people say that to me, but what else do you say? I couldnt think of anything better. So Im sorry if you hate hearing people say that.

I got the news today. My grandma had a biopsy last friday and today we got the results.

Im glad to hear that it gets better as the days pass..right now it doesnt seem that way to me.

    Sorry, I suck at this.

    Finals & AP. High School?

Our daughter, Chris, is 14 and will be starting high school in August. She will be in the IB program.

We waited a week or so to tell her just because we wanted to make sure of things before "letting the bomb explode". We let Chris decide when to tell people at school because Sharon (mom/wife) works at the same school and we didn't want Chris going through more crummy times..

Chris agrees the first few weeks, when there are questions and no answers, are the worst because there was nothing to stop her imagination from driving her crazy.

Mahe, I went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester and would highly recommend it. I am sure you could google best cancer treatment hospitals and find a good one. Good luck.

Mahe, until more members post with their experiences and recommendations about hospitals for your mother, you may want to post in the Lymphedema forum too. There are members who are very knowledgeable about dealing with lymphedema, and you'll find links at the top of the forum with more information from the main Breastcancer.org site.

There have been other threads where members have asked/answered similar questions. Here's one with several replies:

Hi Jackie, I'm Nicole and my mom was just diagnosed too.  I'm 25 and in medical school so my parents also waited a bit to tell me.  I too am completely terrified, shocked, and helpless.  I just found this forum and it's already helping a bit to see that you and I are not alone.  Have they gotten the results of her staging tests?
