Hormonal Therapy after second recurrence
Hello
I was diagnosed for the second time , same type of cancer as the first( ER+/PR+) and right next to the original site. The tumor was less then a cm. . I had a lumpectomy the first time and a MX the second. I also had Chemo the second time. I did not take tamoxifen the first time. For those that did have a recurrence and did take a hormonal therapy, would you go the same route ( take hormonal therapy) the second time around? Thanks

Hi linde22,
I took A rimidex for a few months. I had a lot of bone pain issues and my Dr switched me to Femara and its not as bad. I take Effexor for the hot flashes and it keeps those in check. These are really important drugs for ER+/PR+ cancers.
Hang in there!

My first bc was TN. The second was ER+ so I am taking Arimidex. It's been just over 2 1/2 years - am managing the se's ok but there are se's.

I did Tamox after initial dx, Arimidex after 1st recurrence and am now on chemo after further spread. I may go back to another AI once the chemo knocks things back, but I haven't got there yet...
Good luck with your treatment this time round. Hugs, Angelfalls -
Angelfalls - I am sorry that you have to go through this again. You sound like a strong person and will make it through this bout also. I sent you a PM. LInde

I was on arimidex the first time for a little over 5 years. I was just diax. for a 2nd time in December. I start radiation in 2 weeks and my doctor has taken me off of the arimidex and wants me to start tamoxifen. Just not sure if I want to take hormonal treatment again or not. Not sure if it will work on me since the arimidex stopped working.

ButterflyLady, I am wondering how you are doing. It sounds to me like Arimidex has more SEs than letrozole. I am having a biopsy to see if a nodule in my unaffected side (though I had that side removed when I had chest wall reexcision with my first R) is benign, a recurrence or a newbie. If the verdict is another er positive, I am thinking of asking the doc to switch me to arimidex to try that before anything else is attempted. I had tamox with my first and have been on letrazole for the last few years. A little nervous as it sounds like the SEs of Arimidex are worse.
Sorry I digressed and interjected myself into this post. I am holding you in my thoughts and truly care how YOU are doing.

ButterflyLady,
I was diagnosed for the second time in September of last year , same type of
cancer as the first( ER+)and in the same place, as a matter of fact the scar
from the first cancer was hiding the second cancer. The First time I did chemo, Rad,
five years of Tamox, and six months of Femara. I stopped the Femera due to
severe bone pain. and five (10 year in total )years later I am diagnosed again. What I
wanted to say to you is I would not do the hormone therapy, the side effects
alone will kill you before the cancer does. One of the side effects of Tamox is
uterine cancer, of which I got two years after I finished taking it. My oncologist
wanted to put me on Arinmidex and I said a big NO. However I am taking Indole-3- carbinol which is a natural form of
Tamox, with NO side effects. Look it up on the internet and see for yourself. I
wish you the best, and hope you do well. You might try alternative therapy for
long term prevention.Brandi
