Idianel, faithhopenluv, and anyone I may have missed good luck with everything today. I am thinking of you.
Well my surgery got pushed to the 15th because my Dr. wanted a whole month out from last chemo. Can't see what difference 4 day would make. Then she calls today, they found 3 abnormalties on my bone scan. She is indeterninate about them and will disscuss them with the other Dr.s at the group meeting on Thursday. That may change my course of treatment. So I get to wait until Thursday to find out if I have bone mets. Great, sounds like fun.
-
Prayers for all ladies today..
tellie_savalis Prayers for you as you wait to hear your results..The wait is so hard!
Hugs to all..make memories!

telle savalis...that is horsesh!!...I hear bone scans pick up everything but the kitchen sink so here's hoping it's arthritis or something...I am going to say a prayer for you tonight. Get that primary cancer out and hopefully there is nothing else or the hormone therapy starves what's left...I hear that is the biggest gun in the war-chest so don't you loose faith this close.
My3suns...waiting does suck. I am a nervous type too so I purposefully made myself a list too long to complete (like wax my truck...silly...) but it made time go quicker. Do schedule yourself some relaxing time if you can stand it. The day before my surgery I cut the grass.
Lynn - Friday it is and you will be cancer free in time for the weekend! Hope it goes smooth and you are enjoying your vicodin and a couple of chic flicks this time next week...I hope to be off vicodin by this next weekend and will salute you with a nice glass of wine (and myself too
Faith - you say chemo is the gift that keeps on giving (funny) but also it's the damn thief that keeps on taking...coming up on 4 weeks after last Taxol and still loosing an eyelash here or there...well, I figure that if it's still messing with my eyelashes (the last of them) then it was messing with my cancer right up til the surgeon hacked it out.
-
Thanks 7of9. Funny to think I am hoping for arthritus. Okay so I think the bigggest SE I got from chemo was bad spelling...
-
7o9...you make me laugh. I have been nesting since my time of DX. That said I am wondering if the 'wax on, wax off approach should be a new post op therapeutic technique'
I am working the day before my surgery...seriously cannot think of a better way to manage my time. HAHA. More like saving precious PTO time and earning extra mula to make an extra mortgage payment prior to my turn.
Tellie_S....extra thoughts are with you now and my most heartfelt wishes no further delays in surgery dates.
Bev...too funny. I have many of the same items packed and have also added baby wipes, electric toothbrush, extra phone charger, hard candy and an electric razor to the mix (not that I'll use it, but just in case I get annoyed, I'll make my Sissy do a quick shave :0 ). I already have 6-7 pillows, but would like a wedge. Big challenge is I cannot sleep anywhere but my bed. Not a couch, chair or car sleeper, however, sleeping standing up may be an option.
In fact, I already have my clothes washed and bag packed for the most part. I got a few things larger. My PS said to get some loose jogging type pants. I got 2 new ones with a low rise waistline and a few shorts because of my July date. Got a few large camies that I can step into. It has been suggested to get something for the drains, however, I think I am going to get some surgical tape and make that one of the ways to secure drains to my binder/and-or clothing. (having a DIEP and was told I will be wearing a binder for at least 3-4 weeks). Already have a lanyard for shower time. I am probably taking sandals because I have never worn slippers and often have to sleep without socks and my feet hanging out of the covers.
I also heard someone mention having the armpits waxed prior to surgery. I will ask my BS if this is OK, as it would eliminate having to deal with the discomfort so soon after surgery.
Great idea about smooth move. Already have colace, but just in case.
Because I have seasonal/environmental allergies and I am sensitive to percocet and adhesives along with having paradoxical effects to benadryl/diphenhydramine. my PS suggested I take my Zyrtec one week prior to surgery and the day of with a sip. He said it won't hurt and may help in some small way.
We've already decided I will have vicodin/hydrocodone as the oxycodone is not my friend. Not sure what we will use for my PCA. Will get some feedback from anesthesia on this as well. I am also going to discuss having a scopolamine patch or some agent like that placed prior to surgery and it should last for 24 hours post-op to help with nausea.
Yes, I got a bit focused on meds as the limited ones I have taken were problematic for me. So trying to be proactive instead of getting something I may not be able to tolerate. I already have a copy of my pre-op orders which I will take with me to the hospital. LOL! I will also be receiving a one time dose of Lovenox as standard protocol for clot prevention due to the lengthy surgery.
So everyone always ask about packing....me I am also engaging in knowing not only what to expect from surgery but knowing protocols and meds for pre and post-op as well. I guess that is my one contribution to the conversation. I know how they will check my sites and how often. I also asked what floor I will be admitted to and if I would be transferred to another after the close monitoring is completed. (answer was no-PS/BS will keep me on the same unit from admission to discharge
I am also going to take a list (timeline) of all procedures/dates, allergies and don't forget if you still have periods...the date of your last one.
Overkill......maybe...proactive...definitely.
Wishing speedy recoveries to the warriors that are up this week.
-
tellie - hang tight til you know what it is. There are many things that can pop on a scan.
7of9 - I simply do not have any more eyelashes to give, at least now. I lost all of mine about a month ago....I was calling myself tri-lash for awhile, but they disappeared as well. Some say that they have had theirs grow back only to lose them all a few months later because they were all on the same growth cycle. So damn mean. I'm feeling some stubble on my head, but I really think I could count my hairs if I wanted.
Sandpiper - I didn't think of that, but waxing your underarms is a good idea. I had a lot of nodes taken because the sentinel showed cancer during the lumpectomy. The back of my arm is still slightly numb 6 months later, but it was so creepy initially I couldn't even put deodorant on and used an aresol on that side. I knew I was starting chemo a month after surgery so waited it out - of course a month after I lost all other hair that armpit was still apey. I ultimately used an electric razor and it hasn't grown back yet. And, regarding the pillows that is how I slept after the lumpectomy, basically a pillow pocket with 2 under my head, one under my legs and one on either side of me. Not only did it work well, but now sometimes when I can't sleep i position the pillows.

Tomorrow is my big day! I am not as nervous as I thought I would be. I am having a BMX, no recon. The ladies who have gone before me have given me strength (my heroes). My big worry was the dye injection, because nothing was said by my surgeon about any kind of numbing for that and I heard all those bad things about it. I have even calmed down about that now. If it hurts, it hurts and will be over soon. Good luck to everyone.
Karen

rosetx, I pray that your surgery will go well and you'll have no problems with the TE, expansions or exchange to permanent implants--and for jenlee, that there was no cancer recurrence after you completed your chemo and that you will have good circulation in the flaps on both sides, with no complications or need for additional surgery (until phase 2).
-
Hi everyone! I'm on day 13 post-op from a double nipple sparing mastectomy with tissue expanders. One thing I've learned from being on these boards is that everyone heals differently and every doctor approaches recovery differently so I'm not here to tell you how easy or hard it is but to give you my tips for things that helped me.
1. I got a prescription for ativan to take the day before and the day of my surgery and it really helped to take the edge off. One of the things I was most nervous about was saying goodbye to my kids (ages 7 and 9). Since the hospital is 1 1/2 hours away and I had to go in the day before for the node mapping and then be in at 5:30 am the next day, my husband and I stayed at a hotel. We took the kids out of school for a goodbye lunch then they went back to school and we headed to the hospital. I think the ativan helped make all of that easier.
2. We rented an electic hospital bed! Insurance will cover it, just need a prescription from dr. I'm still sleeping in it and love it. We have it set up in the family room so I can still hang out with everyone. After having this, I can't imagine sleeping in a recliner. When I try sitting in a recliner for any length of time, it feels like my TEs shift around.
3. Danskin hoodies (walmart) that have inside pockets and tank tops. For the first 10 days or so, I lived in the Jacki (an awesome replacement to the hospital gown - my hospital gives them away for free) and other big shirts. Once I put on a tank top (that I could step into) and a hoodie, I felt like my old self. And my seven year old daughter especially liked seeing me in "regular clothes."
4. Satin pj bottoms, especially for the hospital. The first time I tried to get out of my bed in the hospital, it was so hard. Once I out the satin pjs on, it was so much easier!
5. I've had weekly appointments with my hairdresser to have my hair washed and blowdried. What a nice luxury and when you look good, you feel good.
I'm happy to answer any questions. I got my first two drains out at 7 days and I still have two left. Hopefully these'll be ready by end of week or early next week.
And what everyone says is true - the anxiety and fear of the surgery is way worse than the actual surgery. What an emotional burden is lifted once the cancer-causing breasts are removed! Best of luck to all of you! You can do this! -
Karen...so true! You feel better when you look (or think you look) better and when you get dressed. I made husband and mom promise to get me into my shirt and shorts/new capri sweat pants and hit that treadmill despite the nurse saying I was pushing it (she was nice, but over weight so I ignored her). Also the Ativan was a big help...took 2 day of surgery and took one today (got nervous about seeing PS whether he pulled the drains or not...I'd been under 30ccs a day output since day 2).
Today is day 4 post op and I got my drains out!!! Going for my evening walk... Cancer free for all of us soon!!!!
-
Ugh....let Vicodin wear off....too early....mistake...right breast ok, left one, not so much. More vicodin? YES PLEASE!
and to think I never did drugs or smoked anything stronger than a cigaratte...har har har

Hello everyone
So glad to find this forum. I have BMX on June 20th with TE's. Finished chemo in May and am still recovering and now getting anxious about surgery. Then on to rads. I did have a partial MX (left) with ALND (15 nodes removed with 2 positive) on Dec 14/11 so know a little of what to expect but still anxious about both sides being affected now.My thoughts and prayers to all of you having or have had surgery in June. It feels so reassuring to have company. Although I wish none of you were here with me7 of 9- you rock!
-
Sorry about the address thing! Computer doing weird things!
-
OMG 7.......I had a root canal and could only take 1/2 a vicodin. I was flying higher than a kite.
Told PS and he said I could cut them in 1/2 if I wished. I am thinking he will be surprised if I start asking for more than 1/2 post-op. LOL. I think I could use some flying moments. I want to keep up with you
I love my walking and I am so determined to move. PS said he would come in early and get the cardiac monitoring off of me the next day (protocol for cardiac monitoring on the unit I will be admitted to) so I can get my groove back on. I am hoping to have the same abilities as you. Just mildly concerned that darned abdominal incision will be my nemesis. I am logging my 3-4 miles per day/@ 4-5 days a week. Not overkill as I have to preserve the little belly fat I have for my recon.
I was worried PS would be concerned about me wanting to 'push it'. He will guide me, but said my motivation will help me immensely. TY for the continued inspiration. Ty Karen for your tips as well.
Idaniel, Rose, Jen, Jackie, 3kidsmom, curveball, Kim, Lynn and Bev-Many good wishes and positive thoughts from me to this weeks June warriors.
-
tellie - I am really praying for you, sending good vibes that the scan turns out okay..
sandpiper - You're funny too lol... It's like we're planning for a vacation, with all the packing and I always do overpack when I go away so I guess I'm overpreparing for this too but it keeps my mind off the actual thing.
3kids and curveball - My thoughts and prayers will be with you tomorrow. Seriously, You are going 24 hours before me so I'll be hoping for the very best for us both. No complications, only good news at the end, oh please.
Karen, thanks for your very helpful post. I have a nice tempurpedic with a wedge pillow. I also have a good recliner with electronic controls. It ain't a hospital bed but will have to do...
6of9 - you really do rock. If I am half as together as you are so soon after surgery, I'll be damned happy. It must be the power of positive thinking or something like that. Right now nerves have overtaken me but I'll try to toughen up after Thurs.
Ladies, I here a lot of talk about ativan. I am a strong proponent in whatever makes you feel better is good but I have klonopin, not ativan. I know they are in the same family. Can you substitute one for the other? I will need something for sure. My bs said she would be calling me the night before which is tomorrow night so I guess I can ask her but if one of you know, it would be helpful....
I wish the best to every one of us having surgery in June.
-
3kids and curve all good luck tomorrow I will be thinking about you.
Ok so I still have 6 days but feel like I am going crazy trying to have
everything done. I have a blood clot in my heart so they were going to
postpone surgery but now it's the 11th for sure. I am not sure about the
camisoles. My ps told me they will give me a medical bra and I would not
need the camisole. Are they the same thing? They look so soft. He showed
me the medical bra and it was just ok. Not sure if I should buy one anyway?
I really want to do well. 7of9 is my inspiration. My son is 11 and is going to middle
School and I really want to make his ceremony the week after. Thank you all. -
hannah, I know exactly how you feel, going crazy trying to do everything. I have exactly 38 hours left (yep, we're starting to count down the hours) and I'm still making lists. I have bought and returned so many button down shirts different sizes and button down pj's. I bought the camisoles from 2 different companies, one having velcro in the front and the other that you can put on feet first. No one in the medical field told me to buy them but I spent so much time on the internet researching and investigating things. That was actually a bad idea. Dr. Google can drive you nuts. Of course, you are going to see the worst stories first. I backed off but the internet is where I got the idea for the camisoles and I'm wearing one of them home from the hospital. It will still be before your day so I will write and tell you if it was necessary or a good thing. I was just told, not for the first time, that anticipation is the very worst part. So I'm kind of looking forward to getting this over with so I can stop nervously anticipating. I'm sure you will do great Hannah and you will be there cheering your son on. Congrats on his graduation and best wishes to you
Oh, and my doctor gave me a perscription already so I wouldn't have to wait when I left the hospital. It's for percocet (oxycodone) which is one step up from vicodin I think. Depending on your perspective that's very good thing for me or a very bad one. I want to be as pain free as possible and meds don't make me sick to my stomach so I'll say it's good thing
.

LOL Bev.....speaking of vacation......my sissy is going to Top Sail (?) during the middle of my recovery and her and BIL are trying to make arrangements for me to go along. I should be about 4+ weeks out from surgery..we shall see.
In the meantime I rented a carpet cleaner today and managed to get my upsatirs done this evening including washing down the walls in the bedroom. I think I have indeed gone mad. But spring cleaning must go on.
I bought a home wax kit and am going to try it out. If that doesn't work I will head to the nail place down the road that does waxing. My PS said the hospital will give me a surgical bra and the nurse said to get an extra sports bra with a front opening to wear when the other is being washed. I bought a couple of lacy light sports bras today for later down the line as there will only be teen buds by the time I am done.
I am currently a size "B" and PS said I will be smaller after surgery.
For any of you to be a fly on the wall when he told me that. I said "Just how much smaller can I get???????!!!!!!????"
This is considering that I may have a BMX. When I later told him I may opt for a UMX things got interesting. I asked about symmetry and he said he could 'mold' my newbie to have the natural curve and slight droop (hahahaha) like the other.
Amazing what they can do.
-
So I'm at work today and had a little panic attack when I realized that I only have a week and half to get everything done! Oh did I forget to say that my department is moving to a new location on July 1st with a new boss and everything! So I need to have all my personal stuff packed up. I am walking thru my house making a mental note of everything that needs to be done before surgery
7of9 your awesome on how well your doing I hope I do the same. Your our inspiration!
Idianel rosedx jenlee hope your healing well
Jackie curveball 3kidsmom your in my thoughts and prayers for tomorrow. -
Today was the day to call and get my surgery time, plus the sentinel node injection. I am to be at the hospital at 6 AM tomorrow, will be in overnight and expect to be pretty doped up the rest of that next day, so here are prayers for those having surgery on Wednesday & Thursday...
for Jacki2005 that all cancer will be removed with clean margins all around;
for 3kidsmom thanksgiving that your nerves are calming and that peace will continue and increase for you;
for Lynn27 that your nodes will be free of cancer, you will have no LE or other side effects from the sentinel node biopsy, and it will be possible for you to have DIEP reconstruction;
and bevg49: for calm, no spread of cancer, no complications from your diabetes, COPD, heart or other health conditions and problem-free TE's.
If anyone thinks of it early tomorrow morning, I'd appreciate prayers for peace, and that the cancer has not spread to my skin, fascia or nodes, so that no radiation treatment will be advised.
-
Hi Everyone!
I am also a June surgery. BMX on June 18th. I finished TC on May 17th and still doing herceptin until next Feb.
Good luck to everyone who is having their surgeries this week!! Wishing you all the very best!
I, like a lot, am terrified of this surgery. More than I was of chemo. I have only had one surgery and that was the port placement, other than having my 2 kids (ages 9 and 6) I cried the whole time they took me in surgery.
One of the things I am scared about is the injection for the nodes. Can anyone who has gone through that explain it a bit more and how bad was it?
hope everyone sleeps well tonight
-
First- everyone going in tomorrow, my thoughts are with you. I am hoping we all do as well as our couragous leader! This is a busy week! My surgery was supposed to be the 11th but got move to the 15th so I will be going in with mango.
Second- Saw my MO today. He said I will have to have a PET/CT but only because my surgeon won't do the operation without one. He said not to worry, it is nothing, not mets, and actually seemed annoyed with the BS. Appearently some counts that go up when you have bone mets have not only not gone up but are low. I trust my MO, he is actually a very sought after MO in the area and I am glad to have him. Yesterday I was freaking out. I think that was worse than when I was told I had BC.
Okay, family is waiting for me but I just wanted to post this.
-
@3kidsmom & JenH13, I had the sentinel node injection today. I was given a local anaesthetic before the tracer injection but some of the tracer must have gone outside the numbed area because it did sting a little. The radiology person said if it did sting it would be for only a short time and this was indeed the case. When the images are made after the injection, I had to hold still for 5 minutes for each image and the stinging had gone away by the time the first picture was completed. In fact, the thing that caused me the most discomfort was that my right leg went to sleep while the images were being taken (old back injury). That was really annoying! But the injections themselves were only minimally painful.
-
I hope everyone is doing well. Bevg49, you will be in my prayers on thursday. I want to go ahead and tell Lynn27 and Kimkay you both will be in my prayers on the 8th in case I'm not back online yet on friday. I have been in a frenzy all day trying to get everything finished and still didn't get it all done. Oh well, I guess it will have to do.
-
oh my goodness you girls!! im praying for all that are on the list for the next three days.. 3kidsmom, curveball...and all the others. Asking the Lord and Creator of all things to bless the hands of the surgeons, for full healing and for the cancer to be gone....in His name!!
i will make a prayer sheet for all your names. and for your kids n family too.
hugs!!
70f9!!! it made me laugh out loud that you ignored the nurse because she was overweight. lol! made me laugh harder that you typed that out loud!!
-
curveball - I always pray for peace and now, before I go to bed and then again tomorrow morning, my prayers will be that your cancer has spread to anyplace at all. I hope no radiation will be needed in your future at all.
3 kids - my prayers are definitely with you too..... I am sending out positive healing vibrations that are meant to reach each one of us scheduled for surg in the next few days (and the past few days too, that those people continue to imporve and get better...)
I have one question. When I asked my bs about the dye needle which seemed a little scary she said "no worries.. i do that when you're already asleep." I have not heard of one person who had it done after being put under. Has anyone ever heard of it?
-
hi bevg49, I don't recall hearing one way or the other about whether the blue dye is injected before or after anaesthetic, but maybe your bs meant, now that she knows you are nervous about the needle she will wait until after you are out to inject the dye. Or maybe that it is just her personal habit to inject it at that time.
-
Bevg49- when I had my SNB with my lumpectomy they injected the radioactive when I was awake( 4 shots). My Dr gave me cream to numb it. Everything else was done during surgery Honestly it did not hurt I would say it hurt more when they hooked me up to my port for chemo.
Jenh13 welcome I'm having surgery the same day. My last day of chemo was the 16th wishing you the best! -
Time is going fast and in slow mo at the same time ... at least it feels like that. Glad to hear that some of you who have already got the surgery behind you are doing well! Prayers for continued healing and only positive news from here out for 7of9, idianel, rosetx and jenlee!Good luck to the next group going today and the rest of the week -- sending hugs, prayers and positive vibes that all will go fantastically well to jacki2005, curveball, 3kidsmom, bevg49, Lynn27 and KimKay!I am up for Monday and am having same anxieties as everyone else for the most part, but trying to keep busy and continuously visualize and prayer for the best possible outcome
Am so glad i found this forum, even if i don't get on here very often or write much, I have already gotten so much helpful info and just feel comforted by seeing that I am not alone.
