Charleston Bound, part 2

Liz R. Thank you for reinforcing what thought could be a great little city to move to.
I will be in Charleston the last week in July and hope to see if it will be the place for me and my family to move to sometime soon. I love knowing how good the medical is. I'm searching for a plastic surgeon in Chicago out of Univ of Chi or Loyola if anyone has a recommendation. Due to insurance I can't go out of state. I should just look for a job while out there and move to charleston now haha! I have TE in that are failing and my current plastic surgeon want to fix it (his error) and have a third surgery. I am not letting this guy open me up one more time!
So happy I found this board, if I move to Charleston I should start a support group for y'all (did I say that right)? -
Cascader- Happy traveling today! Enjoy Charleston!
-
Kathy: Hope all went well for your Stage 2 surgery on the 1st! Cascader: Best wishes for you on your upcoming surgery! Please keep us posted!
What is the weather like in South Carolina now? My son will be attending University of South Carolina (Columbia, about 1 1/2 hrs inland from Charleston) as a Freshman in the fall and we are heading there for Orientation at the end of the month. I am expected VERY HOT. I am super excited as it gives me yet another reason to travel to SC! It is a long way from home but SC is practically our home away from home these days!
Hope everyone is doing great! I am enjoying newly single life (husband & I recently split after 25 yrs together) - though with 3 children home, it can be a challenge at times! Take care! Liz
-
Liz, just got here . Its late and right now it is 79degrees and humid, big change for me coming from dry mountain air. Long day of travel, looking forward to a day to get organized, then pre-op Wednesday. Here we go!

I am all marked up and ready to go. Busy day today doing pre-ops. Started the day with the imaging center telling me they were not in network and that I had to self pay. I was not very happy about that because I specifically called 2 months ago to check. I gave them my credit card, what was I to do? Next I barfed in the MRI machine, got instantly nauseaus from the gluconate (?) they injected. Hmmmm... not off to to the greatest start but rolled with the punches. The rest went well, Dr Kline says I have an excellent vessels in my donor site and I have what appears to look like a giant drawing of the CBS eyeball on my butt. Looks like I will get a solid Bcup on my recon side and he will remove my implant on my healthy side. Can only imagine what that is going to look like. I feel strangely calm, except for the fleet enema that I am about to take tonight. I have been taking laxitives for 3 days now and nothing! So fleet it is! Must be all the travel. On that note, goodnight all, see you on the other side.
-
Wishing you a pleasent sleep tomorrow and a speedy healing. Before you know it you will be on the other side. Healing hugs, Jamie
-
cascader- Healing vibes.
-
Cascader, I've been MIA for a while, but wishing you the best outcome ever. Post when you feel up to it. Hope you heal and feel well soon.
Linda

Hi, everything went well according to dr Kline and I have excellent blood vessels. Slept all day and night afterwards, not in any pain but just discomfort, haven't really need the pain meds. Will be getting up to go the bdthroom soon, so that will probably change. Haven't Really Looked yet but think I am smaller than expected.
-
Welcome to the other side Cascader! May your healing be swift.
-
Cascader: Glad to hear you made it through surgery and are not in great pain. I remember sleeping so much those days after surgery - sometimes could barely keep my eyes open! The first trip to the bathroom is hard - but it gets so much easier each time. Try to walk when you are ready - it really helps - even if it is to the nurses' desk and back! Which hospital are you in? (Massey gals went to Roper but if I remember correctly, Kline's patients are at another location). It is probably too early to tell how big/small you are yet. Did Dr. Kline do anything other than remove the implant on the healthy side (like a lift?). Sending you lots of healing vipes - sounds like you are doing great! Hope all goes well with the potty break! Take care! Liz
-
Liz, I am at east cooper and they are taking very good care of me . Hubby stayed last night but don't think he needs to stay again tonight. They just took the implant out on the other side and will wait to see what it looks like, most likely will have to have a lift later on . Got up to use the bathroom, took some pain meds. Have been having allergic reactions to antibiotic so keep switching me. Just sent hubby out to find a starbucks, you know us pacific northwesters, nothing else will do . Thanks for the good wishes.
Will try walking tomorrow -
Ughgg, rough day today. Sooo nauseous . Hoping for a better day tomorrow.
-
So sorry to hear of the nausea. I had it pretty bad after Stage 1. Asked for the anti nausea patch for Stage 2 and it worked much better. Hoping yours is short lived.
-
Cascader ~
Sorry you are off to a slow start on recovery. I had a surgery last week to remove a protruding implant, and the surgeon prescribed Zofran (under tongue tablets) for nausea. I didn't need them after all. The antiobiotics and narcotics did make me queasy after my big surgery last summer, so I tried to have toast and tea before taking them.
I wish you well very soon!
-
Hi all, I Am out of the hospital and resting in my nest of pillows. Feeling better and easier to move about now. Off pain meds but still sleeping ALOT . Raining here in charleston, tornado warnings in surrounding areas but I am oblivious . Wishing my husband was a better cook. Hope u r all well!
-
Cascader- so glad you are feeling better, and "nesting" comfortably. Sleep all you can...each day will be a little easier, but don't be surprised if you hit a wall in a week or so. How many drains do you have? Don't hesitate to take the pain meds again, if you need them. As you start moving more, you may have new pains. Hope your DH keeps you fed well. That is a good thing if you feel like eating! No reason to eat bad food in Charleston:) hugs to you!
-
Thanks jacee. Yep took a pain pill in the middle of night, just one but they totally zonk me out and I have crazy dreams. I have 2 drains both on my right , one hip one breast.
I have to figure out the pillow thing , it's my lower back that hurts the most. Hubby did good this morn, found "sprout" a natural food restaurant and they are juicing me high protein high vit c smoothies. Perfect as not much of an appetite yet. Time for a nap . Lol. -
I am one week out today. How long after sgap will I have a better idea of what I will look like and how long dioes it take to soften?Right now the recon side has a nice shape but is higher . I know it is too early and stage 2 is for fixing, but just wondering how others felt after stage 1??
-
Cascader~
Do you have a pillow or bolster under your knees? My PT always puts a bolster under my knees when I'm laying on the table, and it takes the strain off lower back right away.
I'm taking note of the Sprout restaurant for sure. I may end up in Charleston for surgery so have been following this thread though it's not as busy as NOLA. Are you staying within walking distance of the hospital?
I have a two-hour phone consultation with Dr. Massey tomorrow morning. She is my last hope. Who is your doctor? I will be at Roper - have to because of my heart history. Heard it's really nice, but would have loved the smaller setting in NOLA. Have always wanted to go to Charleston though and plan to go at least 3 days prior to visit while I am still feeling good.
Hope your energy picks up soon, and you can get out more. Take care!
-
Hi pinkheart, Dr Kline and Craigie were my surgeons. East Cooper Hospital across the bridge from Charleston. They have a floor dedicated to taking care of flap patients and I felt well taken care of. I am staying in a condo about 5 min away. Think I have figured out the pillow thing, I have 2 under my knees and u r right it helps. Got out a bit today, went to a great waterfront restaurant and watched the dolphins play. I just love it here!. Everyday gets better but I am just taking it easy . I am a sun/ beach girl so it is killing me not to be out there everyday all day . Hope your consult goes well and you get all your questions answered. Good luck!
-
Pinkheart, I had Dr. Massey at Roper. Love her and loved Roper. The nurses are all great there and you will be better off at a full-fledged hospital. Yes, do visit Charleston before your surgery. It is a beautiful town with a lot of history, lovely homes, great shopping and restaurants. The beaches and the water are wonderful. It is all of what southern hospitality has to offer. It I think some of the other ladies on here will vouch for this also. I did tour NOLA when I was there visiting. It is lovely and private, but I still love Roper and Charleston. You will be happy wherever you go as long as it is with Dr. Massey!!!! I don't think you will be disappointed. Good luck..
Cascader, Glad to hear things are going well and you are feeling better and healing everyday.
-
Linda & Cascade~
Thanks for your personal stories - helps so so much. Cascade, I'm a water girl too, and want to body surf and beach it before surgery for sure. What was name of waterfront restaurant? I'm kind of keeping notes.
Warm wishes and thanks!

Hi Girls! Haven't been on in a long time! I read, but do not post. I am doing great...it was a long journey, but it feels wonderful to be complete. I would at some point like to have my nips touched up again, but for right now, I am totally satisfied! Miss all my Charleston girls, but looks like a few of us might be meeting up for a short get together. This site, along with Dr. Massey, has created some wonderful friendships that will last a lifetime! PinkHeart, You will LOVE Charleston!!!! Fleet Landing is a very nice restaurant in the waterfront. Eat out on the deck if possible! Roper Hospital is wonderful. Dr. Massey has her own nurses that only tend to her patients...it is like they are always right outside your door. You must give yourself a couple of days to tour Charleston before surgery too. You will not regret that choice. Best of luck.
Sandy B.

Hi girls, sorry I have not posted lately.
I had my stage Ii with Dr. maasey ( she is wonderful). At Roper Hospital June 1st.
The nurses were the Best Ever. I have Never been so pampered. It was amazing.
My only mistake was not coming sooner so I could enjoy Charlston! It is beautiful and friendly. If I have another surgery I would definitely go to Charlston and at least 4-5 days early! Hugs to you all. Kathy -
Hi everyone, thank you for the well wishes. Sore today, overdid the walking yesterday and out to dinner. Getting my drain bulb changed out today so an unschefulrd dr visit and then nothing but reading . Pinkheart, it was the Boathouse restaurant on Breech inlet, across the bridge from CHS between Sullivan's island and Isle of Palms.
-
Kathy, wonderful to hear you had a great experience at Roper. I loved it there, too. What all did Dr Massey do for your stage 2? I suppose you are in compression. Not so fun with the summer heat, but worth it in the end.
Yes, I think we have all fallen in love with Charleston! Healing hugs to you. -
Sandy, good to hear from you!! I am almost finished. Heading to NOLA in a few weeks for tats with Vinnie. Will also see Dr. Massey. Can imagine being finished!!! Have your tats just faded? Is that to be expected??
-
Dr.Massey did my tats, not Vinnie. She used a different technique, so yes, they faded. She does not do tats anymore, and did not want to do mine last time, but wanted me to let Vinnie to do them. I was there, and did not want to make another trip, so asked her to do the tat. It is OK, but really could be touched up. I would not make a trip just to get touched up. If I ever go to Gatlinburg, Tn on vacation, I may make an appointment with Erlene in North Carolina to to them.
